In reference to the person who could not post to the WRG website but could see others postings; I had the same problem this year and I solved it by unsubscribing and then subscribing. I do not know how I got broken from the list but I did have a new internet address- maybe that had something to do with it. I believe there are many list members who have this problem as I can not believe the Whitneys have lost any interest in genealogy. I was told also that if the server does not match your address as a list member it will not accept your post. This must have been a safety measure to shield list members from all these spam messages. You know the ones- about increasing the size of various body parts. James Whitney
Dear WRG: Here IS the website. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~jdevlin/ Senior moment, I guess. Allan
Dear WRG: I just picked this up in tonight's e-mail, and checked it out for a couple of minutes. It has a LOT of CT stuff that will be very valuable to me, and a fair amount of MA material as well. It could be especially useful if you want to look for information on the spouses of Whitneys we already have records for in our transcriptions. I cannot testify to the accuracy of the transcribers, of course. Happy Hunting! Allan E. Green
The only mail that is coming through does not carry the rootsweb address when you hit "reply." This is such a great list--I hope the problem isn't permanent. Marion Whitney Martin

Hi Whitney, The Whitney List appears to be active. At least I am getting a few items regularly, although not as much as in the past. I think there were four or five this morning. I'll post your info and maybe those in charge of the list can determine why you're not getting the messages. Re your commentary on the John-1/W-O-W lineage, I'd really like to learn if there are some connections. I would think there are, but you are probably correct that it will take a test with increased markers. Can this be done with the material we have already submitted? In other words, can they run the test using our swab information if we pay an increased fee for the additional testing? Dear WRG: Just got a notice on another list that Laird Towle, the founder of Heritage Books, has added an update to his personal database of Hew Hampshire people, some 76,000 of them. You should read his cautions about the sources and how to find them, about rechecking his data before republishing, and about credit to the originator, etc. There are just a few Whitney males listed in the early part of the 1830's, and principally as husbands of women of families about which he had an interest. It can be found at: http://nhfamilies.com Happy Hunting! Allan E. Green

My Great Grandfather Daniel Frank Whitney (Pierce No. 5603) had a brother Alonzo B. (Pierce No., 5607) who served as a private in the 10th Reg., Vermont Volunteers, Co. G, mustered in Sept. 1, 1862 (see <http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/soldiers.htm>). Discharged Feb. 24, 1864 for promotion as Capt. in 26th U.S.Colored Infantry (U.S.C.T). I've finally succeeded in documenting online his service in the latter unit and find that there was a second Whitney in the 26th U.S.C.T. Every time some one posts to the list I get about a half dozen error messages about bad address'. To keep me from going nuts the list is set up to dump you after 5 bounced messages. Dear Whitney Listers- I have just identified the following 1840 Warren co.,New York census listing: WHITNEY, Solon E. Warren Co. Queensburg 297 This is my gggrandfather-Solomon Eli Whitney (Vermont born lumberman), who had five young children and a wife in 1840 at Sandy Hill,New York. Additional Warren county information: Warren County Profile and History Published in 1841 QUEENSBURY, was organized in 1788. The soil in the E. part of the town is a strong and productive loam, in the W. it is sandy. Pop. 3,664. The village of Glenn's Falls, in this town, lies on the N. bank of the Hudson, 53 miles from Albany, 3 W. from Sandy Hill, and 17 from Saratoga. It received its name from a Mr. Glenn, the first settler, whose house is still standing about 20 rods from the falls. ------------------------------- 1871 Directory of Queensbury & Glens Falls Warren County, New York QUEENSBURY was incorporated by patent as a township, May 20, 1762, and embraced 2,300 acres. It was reorganized as a town March 1 3, 1786. Luzerne was taken off in 1792, and a part of Caldwell in 1810. A strip of territory one mile wide was taken from Luzerne and added to this town in 1802. It lies between Lake George and the Hudson River, in the south-east corner of Warren Co. The west part is occupied by the Luzerne Mountains, and the extreme north part by French Mountain, a high, rocky bluff, which rises precipitously from the surface of Lake George to the height of 2,500 or 3,000 feet above tide. The central and south parts are rolling, gradually declining towards the south. The soil is a light sandy loam in the interior, and a deep tough clay upon the river. The fall upon the Hudson at Glens Falls is about fifty feet, and affords valuable mill privileges. Below the fall is a small island, through which is a cave extending from one channel to the other. The manufacture of lumber is extensively carried on. An immense number of logs is floated down from the pine forests above, to Glens Falls, Sandy Hill and Fort Edward. ------------------------- Anyone know of any good research sources for Warren county, New York?

Baton Rouge - Louisiana's health department has contracted with an online service that enables state residents to order copies of birth and death certificates over the internet. The service is being offered by VitalChek at www.vitalcheck.com. "By expanding service options, we are meeting the challenge to be more aware of the needs of the people who rely on us for information," said Department of Health and Hospitals Secretary, Fred Cerise, in a news release Thursday. The department said it receives more than 500,00 requests for certified copies of birth and death records each year. from the newspaper, The Times-Picayune (of New Orleans), Friday, December 17th, 2004, Section A , page- 2. from the List Adm., RCW
I tend to agree. I am happy to have just received an unexpected Christmas card from a third cousin, once removed, whom I met just this past August. (His great great grandfather is my third great grandfather, Jabez Whitney, by second wife Sally.) I immediately wrote one back that I'll mail tomorrow morning. A bit off topic, but something reminded me of the recent revelation on this list that singer/songwriter Jerry Jeff Walker is related to many of us (e.g., my 9th cousin twice removed). Last night we watched a movie on DVD called Coffee & Cigarettes which is made up of vignettes about people meeting over hot beverages and smokes. In one vignette, Cousins? (not to be confused with an earlier vignette called Cousins without a question mark) two actors meet and one reveals that through genealogical research he has discovered that they are cousins, having had a great-great-great grandfather in common. Based on this discovery, he is eager to form a bond, but the other man is less than eager. In fact, he tries to edge his way out of the situation, politely rejecting suggestions that they work together or socialize and finally declining even to give his home phone number. I thought that others on the list might find this vignette entertaining or just plain cautionary. ________________________________________________________________ Sent via the WebMail system at mail.nexet.net
Is it possible that Captain Asa Whitney had a brother John Whitney, born about the same time. All the information I look at for my John Whitney points to a relationship with Asa. My John Whitney was married to Polly Gibbs, their children Truman, Melinda, Chaucey and Elijah were all born in NY. Truman and his wife have a child buried in the Doty Cemetery in Silver Creek, NY. Captain Asa Whitney and his wife are also buried there. Also the wife of Ira Whitney. I notice that there is an Ira living near John Whitney on the 1850 census in WI, there is also an Ira Whitney in Ashtubula Co., OH in 1840 which is where I believe my John was in 1840. Any ideas?? Hello Kess, I have sources for the marriage of Nathan Whitney and Sarah Cox in Columbia, Maine, but none tell me Sarah's date and place of birth, or the date the marriage took place.
