I found this while researching New York WWI war deaths. George H. Whitney (17 Jan., 1894-31 August, 1918)- Killed in WWI. PVT Co.L., 105th INF U.S. Army Son of Frederick A. Whitney(b. 24 Sept., 1843 in Vermont and died 4 Dec., 1920 in Saratoga Springs,N.Y.) Family lived in 1900s in Saratoga Springs,Saratoga, N.Y. and all are buried together in Maplewood cemetery in Saratoga Spgs. George had a brother named Frederick M. Whitney and his mother was Loretta(1875-1965).
Seeking information regarding the descendants of Levi Whitney Jr. and Polly Fish. Levi was the son of Levi Whitney abd Hepsibah Fay and the half- brother of John Whitney born 1780 in Ashburnham, Mass. Polly was the daughter of Nathan Fish and Abigail Pierce. Polly was born 18 January 1788 in Bridgewater, Vermont and died 7 August 1831, in Bridgewater. Any help appreciated. Whitney Hite
George W. Whitney, b. in Ohio 1849, married to Harriet(Hattie) Osburn. Children were: Anna J., William S., Mary L, Harry E., Cladie (?) on 1900 census, Beckie, Minnie, and Samuel G. Anna and William were born in IA and the rest of the children born in Clover County, IL. Harry headed west sometime around 1917, and married Edna Louise Kimbell in South Dakota. They lived in Sheridan, Wy. After losing a baby in 1919, Edna disappeared from records, and Harry went to Boise, ID. He married my grandmother in Sandpoint, ID, in 1921 and they lived in Boise where he owned a Cadillac Service shop. They parted BEFORE my dad was born in Oct. 1922, and he was gone from the Boise directory after 1923. Where did he go??? That's still my brick wall. Is he the H.E. Whitney in Toledo, OH, 1930, with the wrong birth year and state? He used H. E. a lot on records. That's where I am right now, although I'm trying to contact Samuel G. Whitney's grandchildren in Minnesota. Nancy Whitney Hicks
Well Robert's info means, Nancy, that you and I are related from two sides, if this indeed is your grandfather's line. My maternal grandmother was a Whitney: John (& Elinor) 1, Benjamin 2, John 3, Samuel 4, John 5, John 6, Sedate 7, Moses 8, Charles 9, Irene (my grandmother) 10. My father was a Chapman, and we can trace his direct line back to Nathaniel (son of Edward Chapman) who was a brother to Johnny Appleseed's (and Sarah Chapman's) g-g-grandfather. The more I search, the more "small worlds" I find. Love it. Lanie -------Original Message------- From: Robert L. Thank you to all who emailed about my problem getting through to the WHITNEY-list. Appreciate it and hope the emails keep working now. One minor little thing tho'...I'm not new to the list. Have been a member since 1998 or 99! It's just taking a long time to track down my grandfather and find his Whitney line. Am almost there!! Thanks again. Nancy
Looking for the husband of Amanda C (Congdon/Condon) Whitney who died in Reading, Massachusetts on July 7, 1939. She left a daughter Edith F. Tucker and nieces Miss Ruth Tucker, Mrs. Edward Toomy, Mrs. Frank Brightman. Amanda was born in Berwick, Nova Scotia and lived in Somerville; Charletown and Reading, Massachusetts. She was 94 years old at the time of her death. Bill Whitney
I GOT THRU! Hello, everybody! nancy whitney hicks, daughter of James Elert Whitney .
Will try one more time to get this thru to the list. My grandfather is Harry E. Whitney, of Illinois-and hopefully the son of George and Harriet (Osburn) Whitney, b. 1878. Found the following inf. in History of Henry County, Illinois, pg 205 Wm. Whitney, b. May 13, 1823, Washington Co, Ohio, to John and Sarah, natives of Massachusetts. (John died in 1849). Wm married Jane Cheffy, of VA. They purchased land and lived in DeKalb County, Winnebago County, and Clover Twp. Henry County, IL. Wm was a member of the Christian church, Masonic Order, served one term as school director, one term as Path Master. Says that Wm and Jane had 6 children: George W. (married Harriet Osburn), Sarah (m. James Woodworth), and Charles E.(m. Lura Mosher) and other children deceased. George W. Whitney may be my "missing" grandfather's father, I hope! Does anyone else have more information on this family. Nancy W.
Do you know why I am being blocked from the Whitney-L? (at least my emails TO the list are blocked, I still receive!) It's been this way for months. I changed my address to see if that would help, tried unsubscribing and resubscribing, but apparently it's me they don't want on the list. Why? I've been trying to find my Whitney grandfather for so long and now this....it's very discouraging. Nancy W. Hicks
Need proof and sources. We have received a source from the History of Woodstock and Genealogies of Woodstock Families 3:141 that show the following children WERE born in Woodstock, Windham County, CT: John Masters CALL b. August 17, 1760 Eunice CALL b Apr 5, 1760 (maybe this was suppose to be 1761) Betsey CALL b Jan 10, 1766 Electa b Mar 1775 Considering that James CALL, Senior with his 20 to 22 children, there had to be more children born between 1766 and 1775; (keep in mind he served out of State of Vermont in the Revolutionary War). He could have returned to Woodstock, CT. (in other words had children in another State then returned to CT). We are trying to locate ALL the children (with proof of where they were born and dates of their birth including sources) of James CALL, Sr & Hannah (Rebecca) MASTERS (aka MARSTERS, MASTES) he married her on March 8, 1757 in Leicester, Worcester, MA: There is proof that some were born in Woodstock, Windham County, CT; but not all of them were; Keep in mind that James CALL, Senior was married three (3) times and was known as a "wanderer". James CALL, Senior, born Sept 2, 1728 in Charlestown, Suffolk County, MA (son of Samuel and Abigail SPRAGUE) also served in the Revolutionary War but from the state of Vermont. We are seeking one Silas CALL, son??? or was he a nephew??? or a what kind of kin???, who married Polly (aka Polley) WHITNEY (daughter of Jonathan WHITNEY and Mary WOODARD). Silas married Polly on Oct 21, 1802 in Hartford, Windsor County, VT. This might mean that he grew up in VT; perhaps this Silas was born in VERMONT. Silas CALL & Polly WHITNEY had 12 (TWELVE) children: Of their known children and through census records, death records, marriage records, civil war affidavit(s), these children waver back and forth to where their father Silas CALL was born; Vermont & NH; never has CT been used as a birth place of their father: These are the children who say: Ira CALL--Father born in NH; mother born VT Harriet CALL--Father born in VT; Mother born VT Silas CALL--Father born NH; Mother born VT Ophelia CALL---Father born NH; Mother born MASS in one other source: Ophelia CALL--Father born VT; Mother born VT. Therefore, our Silas CALL who married Polly Whitney must have been born either in New Hampshire or Vermont. Here are the following children of James CALL and Hannah (aka Rebecca) MASTERS (aka MARSTERS, MASTES): Abigail CALL, born Jan 14, 1758 James CALL, born Mary 14, 1760 Eunice CALL, born 1761 John Masters CALL, born Aug 17, 1761 Asa CALL, born abt 1763 Luther CALL, born abt 1765 Betsy CALL born Jan 20, 1766 Mary CALL born abt 1767 Silas CALL born ??? some say 1769 Electa CALL born Mar 1775 Were ALL these children born in Woodstock, Windham County, CT???? I would think it was doubtful since James wandered around so much unless the wife stayed put. The fact that Silas married Polly in VT. The fact that James CALL, Sr, served in the Rev. War out of the state of VT. Someone out there has the proof and sources that we need; ancestry.com does not provide all sources; and a lot of that info has been copied from what someone else has entered. Thank you so much. My husband's great-grandfather was William Butler Whitney, born 08/31/1887 in Calais ME, died 07/05/1930 in Beaver City NE. I would like to know about his ancestors who were apparently Methodist (or other) ministers in Maine or MA. William married Samantha Belle Prime and had 2 daughters, thus no Whitney descendants. Mary
Please we are trying to find our connection to Silas CALL's parents: Silas CALL was born we believe between 1776 and 1784 possibly in New Hampshire. Silas was married to Polly (Polley) WHITNEY on Oct 21, 1802 in Hartford, Windsor Co.,VT. Polly WHITNEY was born Aug 6, 1785 in Halifax, Windham County,VT. Polly is the daughter of Jonathan WHITNEY and Mary (Polly) WOODARD. Jonathan WHITNEY probably from Malden, MASS. Silas and Polly CALL did migrate to New York; they had some of their THIRTEEN children in VT & possibly NH and rest in New York. Silas CALL appeared in the 1810 census (Syles CALL) in New York, Genesee County. Silas CALL appeared on the census in 1820 in Mentz, Cayuga County, NY. Silas CALL died about 1829 in ?Cayuga County, NY. He was ill with influenza about 1829. Polly WHITNEY CALL re-married to one Robert THOMPSON. Polly was living about 1832 in Horse Heads, Chemung Co., NY. Polly was living in 1840 in Addison, Steuben County, NY. Polly was ill with Apoplexy about 1844 in Addison, Steuben County, New York. Thank you any information you can provide us. Judy [email protected]

Robert Ward wrote:....This is enough to conclude that Gov. WATERMAN had no direct WHITNEY ancestors. Then I realized that his maternal grandfather, Calvin WALDO had married secondly, Clarissa (DWIGHT) WHITNEY, widow of Abel WHITNEY of Northampton, MA. It must be from that connection that his middle name was derived. There is another California Whitney connection here: California's state geologist from 1860 to 1874 was Josiah Dwight WHITNEY, Jr., son of Josiah Dwight and Sarah (WILLISTON) WHITNEY and grandson of ABEL & CLARISSA (DWIGHT) WHITNEY and a descendant of John and Elinor. From a copy of the 1975 edition of Congressional Quarterly's Guide to U.S. Elections, which indexes all candidates for President, Senate, House of Representatives, and Governor in general elections (and, in Southern states, primaries as well) to 1974, here are all the entries for "Whitney": U.S. HOUSE "Whitney" (no first name given) NJ 1850 Thomas R. NY 1854 Wilbur F. MA 1878 C. H. TN 1896 J. J. OR 1908 Herbert P. OH 1914 H. Avery CA 1916 Frank E. KS 1918 Stephen CT 1922 Abner D. NY 1926 Cornelius V. NY 1932 Frederick M., Jr. MA 1968 U.S. SENATE Wheelock MN 1964 GOVERNOR Henry M. MA 1907 Arthur NJ 1925 (Wheelock MN 1982; same fellow as above, but after publication of this edition) With one exception, all these candidates lost. Only one or two had the excuse of running on a third party ticket. The sole winner was Thomas R. in 1854, who garnered 30.9% in a four-way race. (Our Carolyn may have found the answer-- add an Irish surname. That always helps in politics!) The most successful politician named Whitney would have to be Sir James Pliny Whitney, Premier of Ontario from 1905 to 1914: http://www.biographi.ca/EN/ShowBio.asp?BioId=41891 He is a descendant of Henry Whitney, not John and Elinor. Henry also claims the presidents Bush. Is anyone aware of John & Elinor having shown up in any presidential genealogies? Cheers, Ron Kyser
Thanks to Robert Ward and Miles Fowler for the information they sent in reply to my question about Anne Whitney. I haven't been working on her side very long and it is laborious to me to search the record on the Whitney website -- bothers my eyes. Recently I located a copy of THE DESCENDANTS OF JOHN WHITNEY by Frederick Clifton Pierce. Since it is out of copyright there is at least one company selling photocopies. They also have it on CD. I'll check out the entry/entries concerning Deacon Joshua Whitney in detail. Certainly sounds like this my be the missing link I've been looking for. Carol

See http://www.whitneygen.org/archives/vitals/mass/littleton.html http://www.whitneygen.org/archives/vitals/mass/stow.html Her ancestry is still a mystery. My best *guess* is that she might have been an unrecorded daughter of Deacon Joshua-4 WHITNEY [Richard-3, Richard-2, John-1] and and his first wife Zerviah (?ROBBINS?) WHITNEY, who lived in Stow at the time. See http://www.whitneygen.org/families/johnw/john6g2.html#id228 There is a gap of ten years in the list of their recorded children into which your Anna would easily fit. Furthermore, her youngest son was named *Joshua* WHITCOMB. I see that Joshua-4 WHITNEY died in 1787 in Boxborough, MA, but did not leave a will, nor was his estate administered in Middlesex, Essex, or Worcester Counties, MA. Perhaps this clue will put you on the trail of proof. Good luck in your search! Regards, Robert Mr. Robert L. Ward [email protected] http://www.whitneygen.org/home.html
