    1. Ephraim Whitney m. Polly Crocker
    2. Ken and Carol Whitney
    3. WRG: A couple of members of the WRG have contacted both myself and Larry Tracy over the last few years about the ancestry of the Ephraim Whitney who married Polly Crocker at Machias, Washington Co., Maine on 20 June 1813. As far as I know, no one has been able to determine Ephraim's ancestry. Since it is possible that Ephraim was the child of a Whitney family living in Washingtin County who were never before eludiated, I am passing along the following information. It concerns a member of my Whitney Lineage, Nephthalim Whitney. Nep was the brother of my third-great-grandfather, Micah Whitney. Both Micah and Nep were Revolutionary War soldiers. Micah ended his service in January of 1777, but Nep served longer, probably until 1779. His intention to marry Mary Stone was published in Gorhma, Maine on 22 March 1777, probably between stints in the Army. He next appears in the 1790 Federal Census of Washington Co., Maine. He is living alone at Plantation #22, in a township west of Machias. He does not appear in any more federal censuses, and until now, nothing more was known of him. I was recently contacted by the historian John Preston, who is compiling the history of Roque Bluff, Washington Co., Maine. He has supplied be with photocopies of the deed to Nep's land, as well as the results of a legal judgement against him. These documents give us a few more facts, and lead me to believe that it may be possible that Nep was the father of Ephraim Whitney. The deed is dated 10 September 1792, and Nep paid $5.00 for 100 acres. The land became known as Nep's Point, and today is Nepp's Point in the town of Roque Bluff, Maine. It is on a point of land jutting into Englishman's Bay. The deed states that Nep had been a squatter on the land since the year 1784. Yet to be uncovered is the reason for a judgement to be handed down by the court against Nep, and in favor of Nathaniel Tracy of Newbury, Essex Co., MA. In May of 1794, the local sherrif was ordered to jail Nep until the debt of 18 pounds, 8 shilling, 4 pence plus costs was paid. Apparently, Nep must have beat feet, because the property with a house and barn erected on it was assessed for 26 pounds, 16 shillings, 4 pence and awarded to Nathaniel Tracy. We see no more of Nep after that. Perhaps he did go to jail, but more likely, he had flown the coop. Where to? Canada? What we can guess from these documents is that Nep probably had a family. The usual thing for a family man to do was to erect a house and a barn on his property. By the 1790, Nep is living alone on Plantation #22, next door to his brother, Joel. What happened to his family? I don't know. But, what I do know is that his brother Joel, who lived next door, had a son and a grandson named Ephraim. So the name is in the family. There are sure a lot of mysteries yet to be cleared up about this man and his family, but here is another possibility for the researchers looking for the father of Ephraim Whitney who married Polly Crocker. 3. Col. Nathan Whitney was also a very active Mason and founded a lodge of the Royal Arch Masons in Dixon, Illinois in 1853. Is there a source of historical information on the Masons that might include connections to the Whitney's? Greg Nickels Nathan Whitney (1791-1891) A CENTENARIAN January 22, Colonel Nathan Whitney, of Franklin Grove, Ill., celebrated his one hundredth birthday. He was born in Conway, Mass., fifteen years after the declaration of independence, and was one of the pioneer settlers of Illinois, having lived within the State for fifty-four years. Before there was a sidewalk laid in Chicago and a bridge over the river, he was appointed a commissioner to organize Lee County and established his home on its prairies. He served in the war of 1812, and was mentioned for bravery at the battle of Lake Erie. Mr. Whitney had reached the age of threescore and ten when the first gun was fired on Fort Sumter. He has seen the development of the greatest nation on the earth from feeble States harassed by foreign foes, menaced by savages upon its borders, to a country of magnificent cities, which no internal war can disrupt and no foreign foe intimidate. He received his first degree of masonry seventy-four years ago, and is probably the oldest mason in the world. We present a portrait of Colonel Whitney, his son, grandson, and great-grandson, four generations. The one hundredth anniversary of Colonel Whitney's birth was made the occasion of a gathering of prominent masons from all over the state. Nathan Whitney Chapter No. 129, Royal Arch Masons, named in honor of Father Whitney, presented him with a solid silver platter, suitably inscribed, and several hundred congratulatory letters and telegrams were received. - The Graphic. - Scientific American, 7 March 1891, page 147. www.whitneygen.org/archives/biography/nathanw.html ----- Original Message ----- From: Jan Whitaker To: [email protected] Sent: Thursday, June 02, 2005 9:04 AM Subject: [WHITNEY-L] Canton, ME I came across the information that the Masonic Lodge in Canton, ME is named 'Whitney Lodge No. 167, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons". 3. Since I am unable to find anything on the internet to explain this, nor in any of my reference materials, I am hoping that one of the wise people on the Whitney list can solve this dilemma for me. I am stumped by the notation regarding one of my ancestors in a family book. It was stated that in 1667 he was a "householder". He would have been 19 and unmarried at the time. This leads me to believe that this might be some type of occupation rather than a statement of the fact that at such a young age he owned a home. His father was a carpenter and he was the oldest son, so possibly this has something to do with some type of carpentry. However his father also owned a large amount of land in the town and certainly may have given some to the son although at that young an age it just doesn't seem likely. Any help would be appreciated. The final piece in the puzzle came from a family bible record: 2 Apr 2002: http://searches2.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ifetch2?/u1/textindices/W/WHITNEY+2002+12832551959+F Alva Lewis WHITNEY was born 12 Apr 1809, son of Samuel and Sibbel (PHILLIPS) WHITNEY. Samuel was born 17 Aug 1760, and, if you believe what Alvah said in the 1880 census, http://www.whitneygen.org/archives/census/1880/extracts/ia.htm#45 Samuel was born in Connecticut. Samuel's parents were Elijah and Hannah (-----) WHITNEY, according to the bible record. There are two such couples known to me. 1. Elijah-5 WHITNEY [Daniel-4, John-3, John-2, John-1], m. Hannah COFFIN, of Boston and Roxbury, MA, d. 1792: http://www.whitneygen.org/families/johnw/john6g3.html#id513 2. Elijah WHITNEY, "of Danbury", ancestry unknown, m. Hannah (WHITNEY) BASS, widow of Jeremiah BASS. He d. ca. 1815, Leeds, ON, Canada: http://www.whitneygen.org/archives/extracts/phoenix/p0241-0245.html#1108 The latter is very likely the one in question, given the locations in which the two of them lived. Yes, this seems to be a WHITNEY marrying another WHITNEY. There are, however, problems with dates. Elijah-5 WHITNEY [Elijah-4, Richard-3, John-2, Henry-1], the alleged father of Hannah (WHITNEY)(BASS) WHITNEY, was born in 1736. His alleged grandson Samuel was born in 1760. This is impossible. Furthermore, Jeremiah BASS was a soldier in the American Revolution (1776-1783), so his widow could not be the mother of a child born in 1760. Perhaps the Hannah WHITNEY who married Jeremiah BASS was not the same one who married Elijah WHITNEY of Danbury. Possibly the latter was the sister of Elijah-5, born 1735, rather than his daughter. She and Elijah-5 had a brother Samuel-5, so the name Samuel was used in this family. This should give you a lot to work with. I hope you can find the parentage of Elijah WHITNEY of Danbury and his wife Hannah. In the meantime, we've managed to push your WHITNEY line back two more generations. Good luck in your research! 3. I came across the information that the Masonic Lodge in Canton, ME is named 'Whitney Lodge No. 167, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons". Perhaps someone out there is related to Whitneys that once lived in Canton. Jan W

    3. I found another "stray" Whitney this past weekend. This time buried at the Waverly, KS cemetery. The family members I was with saw a grave with a huge pink peony in full bloom. We walked over to admire it and then noticed the Whitney headstone nearby. Another family member took a photo of it but I haven't received a copy yet. This is what I have now: Lucinda J. Whitney "Aunt Jinny" It was a small headstone and I would guess she was unmarried. The headstone nearest her was for a couple with the last name of BOWL. Don't know whether she was connected to this family or not. I have searched on LDS site and found a family of Whitneys in Franklin County (neighbors county Waverly is in) with a daughter named Lucinda. Will provide birth and death dates as soon as I get them. Regards, Carol Simmons

    3. Dear Listers, This past Memorial Day weekend while showing a cousin the area in which her father grew up, we stopped at an antique mall that had a reasonably good restaurant. Afterwards, we all browsed among the antiques and I happened upon a group of photographs matted and framed together. The caption was Campbell School of Prosthetic Procedure, Kansas City, MO. There were 7 men, the last being EDWARD OTIS WHITNEY. I could hardly believe my eyes! A search on the web shows the following Edward Otis Whitney: 8927. EDWARD OTIS WHITNEY (Otis, Otis, Nathan, Jonathan, Jonathan, Jonathan, Benjamin, John),b. Quasqueton, Ia., May 29, 1860; m. at Columbus, Kas., July 3, 1889, Laura M. NORRIS, b. Aug. 17, 1869; d. Oct. 1, 1894. Res. Oswego. I don't know if this is the same Whitney or not....I have no Edward Otis Whitney in my tree (so far as I know now)...but thought it might be of interest of someone on the list. If that should be the case I would be most happy to return to the mall, which is just about 30 minutes from my home, and acquire it for him/her. Best regards, Carol Simmons

    1. Can you help identify this little boy?
    2. Can you help identify this little boy? I found the following post on the Whitney board at Rootsweb.com. In the post, a photograph of little Dannie F. Whitney is included, and it appears that the owner of the photo would like to get it back to a family member. http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=3Dmessage&r=3Drw&p=3Dsurnames.whitney&m=3D1176 Dannie F. Whitney needs to go "home" Author: Billie McNamara Date: 20 Mar 2005 6:49 AM GMT Are you looking for Dannie F. Whitney, born probably 1870-1885, who was either related to or a friend of Ethelyn Wallace -- who was possibly the daughter of Thomas and Martha Wallace of Carson City, Montcalm Co., Michigan (1880 Census)? If so, please contact me. I did a little research and posted the following reply: Re: Dannie F. Whitney needs to go "home" Author: Tim Doyle Date: 31 May 2005 1:57 PM GMT This appears to be Daniel F. Whitney, born about 1877, son of Daniel R., and Phebe A. Whitney. They were enumerated on the 1880 census in Johnstown, Barry Co., MI. Daniel R. was listed as age 36, born in Vermont. In 1870, Daniel R. Whitney was age 26 and with him was William R. Whitney, age 22, probably his younger brother. They were enumerated in Bedford, Calhoun Co., MI (though he is incorrectly indexed as Daniel C. Whitney at Ancestry.com). In 1850, I find Daniel R. Whitney, age 6, and William R. Whitney, age 2, youngest children of Norman K. and Mary R. Whitney, residing in Springfield, Windsor Co., VT. Norman K. Whitney was age 39 and born in Vermont. In 1840, I find Norman K. Whitney enumerated in Rutland, Rutland Co., VT. I have not yet linked Norman K. Whitney to the larger Whitney families, nor have I found current day relatives of Dannie F. Whitney, but I am still searching! Tim
