Robert and WRG (which actually are essentially synonymous) This does sound great. It would sound even greater if there were an electronic index involved. I didn't mind a bit spending the $200+ dollars to by the MA Vital Records from Search ReSearch, which were indexed to allow for rapid searching. Does anyone see a way to use these images to look for specific persons? -- especially when their geographical location is not known? Could we possibly take up a collection so one person doesn't get stuck with the whole cost, and then parcel out the page images to transcribe, the way we did the Pierce? It would really be a boon if we had all the data so that it could be searched electronically. Since presentation is what is copyrightable, would this infringe on Picton Presses copyright? Maybe we could do them and then sell the product back to Picton to publish? Just some thoughts. Let''s kick this around a bit on the WRG newsgroup. Happy Hunting! Allan E. Green
For all you Maine researchers!! Picton Press has announced that they are selling CDs of "Original Records of Maine Towns and Cities." Here is their description: "All of the town and vital records which exist for nearly all of Maine's towns are now available to you in CD format using Adobe PDF. These are the images of original town records (usually handwritten by clerks, many before the year 1892) and are usually NOT typewritten. Clerk's handwriting varies with some being quite good and relatively easy to read while others are more difficult. Also, the quality of each image depends on the quality of the records in the original books and the filming of those books. In many cases ink has faded over time or pages have been torn or worn from use. Also included on these CDs is a map of Maine showing the counties, a map of the county showing the location of the town, city or plantation, an introduction and bookmarks to sections in the original books." The prices range from $29.50 for a single CD to a few hundred dollars for sets of CDs covering some of the larger groups of records. See <http://www.pictonpress.com> for further details. There are about 400 (yes, FOUR HUNDRED!) towns represents in this collection. What a fabulous resource for genealogical research! It would be terrific to get WHITNEY extracts from all of them and to post them on the WRG web site. That would be a lot of work, but very valuable to have. Regards, Robert Mr. Robert L. Hi Huey Sorry I have nothing on William Whitney + Sarah Compton from Ky Eleanore Dilello
I am a great-great-great grandson of Col. Nathan Whitney (1791 - 1891). Born in Conway, Massachusetts, he became a founder of Lee County, Illinois. Nathan, in turn, is the grandson of both Captain Jonathan Whitney (1737 -1792) and Lieutenant Jesse Whitney (1730 - 1813). Jonathan's son, also a Nathan (1791 - 1838), married Jesse's daughter Olive (1758 - 1829). Interestingly Nathan and Olive's sons lived to ripe old age: Luther 96 years, Theodore 7 years (killed by a falling tree), Otis 98 years, Col. Nathan 100 years, Cheeney 90 years, Jonathan 76 years Poor Theodore! That tree cost him 90 years! Talk about being in the wrong place ... I am looking for any descendents of these lines (therefore my closest Whitney cousins), any of you out there? Best wishes -- Greg Nickels Seattle, Washington
Hi Just reviewing some posts from the archives 1998 and saw a post by Robin Whitney requesting information on Luther Henry Whitney.I am researching his family and have quite a bit of information if Robin is still out there. Eleanore Dilello

I am descended from John, John, Timothy, Joseph, Palmer, Lemuel, Ida G. Whitney. Ida is my great-grandmother. Ida Whitney was born 16 Sep 1854 in Riley, McHenry Co., Illinois and married DeWitt Clinton Ide on 07 Jun 1876 in Sycamore, Dekalb Co., Illinois. They eventually settled in Belleville, Kansas, raising 4 children (Jessie M., Clarence D., George Palmer, and Nellie May). Ida died of tuberculosis on 27 Jul 1910 in Long Beach, California. She is buried in Belleville, Kansas. Does anyone know anything of Ida's father-in-law, Harvey Ide (born 09 Sep 1803 in VT). He is the Ide researchers' brick wall. I would really appreciate any information any family information about Harvey prior to his marriage in 27 Jul 1837 to Sarah Marillia DeLand. Thank you. Janet Ide Rubertone
Still unpacking from my move in the summer. Found the book, Munsey's Magazine Vol XVI No. 1 Oct 1896. So am reposting some info. Page 582 has a pic of "Miss Augusta WAREING-WHITNEY from a photograph by Dupont, Brussell's". Page 583 states that she resides in Brussell's, in the pic she wore a gown she wore to the presentation to King Leopold. Her lineage can be traced to John NOTT , Lord Mayor of London in 1363." Hopes this helps someone. Lois
Hello Carol, I can offer no smoking gun evidence that your George is the one connected with the Asa Whitney family. However, I can add two pieces to the puzzle. First, Asa and Rhoda (Blaisdell) Whitney did have a son George. He appears in the family in the 1860 census for Mount Vernon, Kennebec Co., Maine. In addition, there is a third Sturtevant family connection. First, you say that Frank Whitney, son of Asa and Rhoda married Grace Sturtevant. Second, you say that your George W. Whitney married Lillian Claire Sturtevant. I can add the following information extracted from the Civil War Pension File of Jesse Cooledge Whitney: Paulina Whitney filed a widow's claim for Jessie's pension 4 February 1914. She lived at RR5, Auburn, Maine. She listed two sisters: S. Myra Sturtevant, 80 years old of Hebron, Oxford Co., Maine. Also, Abby H. Guild, age 83, of Farmington, Franklin Co., ME. Paulina was born 27 November 1844 in Temple, Franklin Co., Maine. She died July 8, 1921 in Auburn, Maine. So it would appear that Jessie's wife Paulina's sister Myra married a Sturtevant. I think if I was trying to solve this puzzle, I would try to track down this Whitney-Sturtevant connection. Just a thought. Dear WRG: I have been having trouble identifying which Abraham Whitney of Sudbury it was whose prospective marriage to one Sarah Adams or Adames (of Weston) is noted in the Weston Vital Records as having been published on 21 Sep 1771, (on p. 127 of the WestonVR). It might logically seem that it was a son of Abraham Jr. and Marcy Perry Whitney whose marriage is noted in the Sudbury VR's on p. 285. However, that marriage had an Abraham, born 1754 (making him a bit too young) who is known to have married Mehitable Ware in 1780. So, which Abraham of Sudbury was it who did marry this woman on Nov. 12, 1771? Happy Hunting? Allan E. Green
Dear WRG: Triggered by Robert's recent note about Arabella Bowker and Jason Whitney, I have run across a marriage in Hopkinton (a real Bowker treasure trove) between one Samuel Bouker and Lydia Whitney of Mendon, Dec. 12, 1754, in Mendon. Sudbury VR's also show other siblings for Arabella: Danill, b. Jan. 17, 1703/04; father spelled Edman Edmund, b. Aug. 5, 1689; father spelled Edmund also (on the theory that the Edmund above would have been the first son of a man born sometime around 1655/60) one other, who might be a sister; Mary, d. Edmund and Margarett, April 15, 1665 When time permits, I'll go back into the Middlesex VR's and see if I can find more. Allan E. Green
Dear WRG, I have found a clue to the identity of Arabella -----, wife of Jason-4 WHITNEY [Richard-3, Richard-2, John-1] of Stow and Grafton, MA. No reference I have seen supplies her maiden name. A search of published Massachusetts vital records for women with her unusual first name turned up just one likely candidate: BOWKER, Arabelah, dau. of Edman and Sarah, born 6 Mar 1701[/2], Sudbury, Middlesex Co., MA Reference: _Vital Records of Sudbury, Massachusetts, to the Year 1850_ (1903), page 20. See http://books.google.com/books?ie=UTF-8&hl=en&id=pA-bvjlbz74C&pg=PA20&lpg=PA20 The LDS web site <http://www.familysearch.org> reveals that her mother's maiden name was Sarah PARMENTER, but fails to provide any later history for Arabella BOWKER. I suggest that Arabella BOWKER may be Arabella (-----) WHITNEY, wife of Jason-4 WHITNEY. Perhaps with this clue, someone may find proof, or at least supporting circumstantial evidence. Hello Allan and WRG, Re: Recent Abner Whitney Posting. At the expense of being redundant, but to further address the several questioning responses to the recent Posting regarding Abner Whitney, I made an additional inquiry to an acquaintance who works at the aforementioned Portland Room at the Portland, Maine Public Library where numerous records are in repository. Firstly, since Abner Whitney was enumerated in Saco, Maine in 1850, and another with such name obviously died in Portland, Maine during 1855, I felt the Portland Street Directories may, at least, tell a story as to the possibility of the Saco, Maine Abner relocating 15 miles north to Portland after his 1850 tabulation, not to mention his wife's death in 1845 allowing him greater mobility . Indeed, the only time Abner Whitney appears in the street directories of Portland, Maine is in the 1852/53 directory where he is a laborer living on 120 Washington Avenue. The following research points were gained through additional exploration of Abner Whitney: *Referencing "Maine Cemetery Inscriptions for York County Maine" confirm his burial marker location in the Laurel Hill Cemetery at Saco, Maine bearing an inscription of his death occurring on July 16, 1855, age 54 years 8 months. (Seemingly a not so unusual calculation error by the chiseler or a family member since his birth occurred on December 15, 1799.) *Referencing "Burial Records 1717 to 1962 of the Eastern Cemetery, Portland Maine", compiled by William B. Jordan Jr., cpywte.1987 by W. B. J. Jr., Heritage Books Inc., Bowie, MD. - The volume states Abner Whitney is buried at the Eastern Cemetery thusly: "Whitney, Abner, died 14 July 1855, age 62 years, GSL [Grave Site Lost] (p. 150). Note: The Eastern Cemetery is the more ancient of cemeteries in Portland, and have found that a number of persons have been disinterred there and placed elsewhere, noticeably at the Evergreen Cemetery on Stevens Avenue, Portland. *Referencing "Pre 1892 Delayed Returns", microfilm # 104 - Whitney to Wilson, Department of Human Services, Vital Records/Statistics, User Copy 70V, Source of records - City Clerks Office, Portland, Maine. Abner Whitney, died July 14, 1855, age 62 years, White Male, Cause of Death - Choked with [sic/while/when] intoxicated. *Pepperellborough,Maine (Later Saco) vital records show twice the birth of Abner Whitney as December 15, 1799. Some thoughts on Abner Whitney who apparently suffered an untimely demise in Portland, Maine in 1855. Given the absence of any other known or currently identified Abners in the geographic area of Southern Maine and the similarity of his recorded death with burial marker inscription relative to month, day and year, as well as the singular appearance of an Abner Whitney in Portland during 1852/53 as a laborer in the commercial district of Portland, all indicants seem to favor the Saco and Portland Abners as one and the same individual. It remains a possibility that Abner left Saco for Portland shortly after 1850, traveling the 15 miles in search of work. Undoubtedly continued research is needed to either prove or disprove this fact, for none of the above comments by themselves can add confirmation. Assuming both Abners are the selfsame person, the primary question needing resolution is the discrepancy of age, that is, actual 55 years vs the recorded 62 years. Perhaps thi! s further examination might involve the literal Portland, Maine vital records to determine whether a numeric transposition error occurred, who reported the death, and why Abner's death was suspiciously catagorized as delayed. Though not specified here, certainly there are a number of reasons why Abner's age may have been misjudged or incorrectly ciphered. Perhaps even delving into the newspaper pages of the "Eastern Argus" of Portland could offer a death notice with accompanying information. Hopefully some descendant of Abner's can add some clarity to this issue in the future. Thank you Allan, as well as Robert and Ken for all your tireless work for the WRG! Best Wishes, Larry Tracy Jr. Kennebunkport, Maine

Dexter, a farmer, married Eliza Day, and had 13 children. J. B. Whitney married Emerett Brewer, and had 3 children, one of whom died very young. The surviving children were; Flora N. Whitney, and Ernest Whitney. Flora Whitney married C. H. Turner of Binghampton, NY. "A. R. Whitney, was born in Triangle, NY, April 6, 1847, son of Dexter and Elizabeth Farmer. He lived with his brother William D. Whitney, in Lisle, NY. A. R. Whitney married Marintha C. Baker, dau of William Baker. There were two children from this marriage, E. B. Whitney, who became the school commissioner, and Nora N. Whitney, wife of Eugene D. Phelps of Binghampton. Mr. Whitney's brother, William D. Whitney, was born in Triangle, Jan 9, 1849. He married Mary R. Parsons, and they had; Nina M. Whitney, Fayette Whitney, and Ora V. Whitney." This is clearly the right family. It establishes Adelbert R.
