In the off chance there is someone out there who might have this same Polly White, I am offering up the most confusing and conflicting mess of information w ith the hope that someone can help me sort it out and/or pin it down! I apologize up front for the length. My great-grandmother was Sarah E. White, b. 1858 in Logan WV. She married John Burgess in 1878. I was given information that her mother's name was Polly Ann White and father was unknown. This was my starting point. I was then told by someone in an email quite some time ago that on Sarah & John's marriage record, she was listed as the daughter of H & P(olly) White Bailey. I then later received conflicting information that Polly's husband was a Charles White. I then received a copy of Sarah White Burgess' death certificate wherein her brother George had listed her father's name as Mastin White. Now I'm beginning to wonder if this Polly White ever got married at all and was just going around having children. sigh..... Here's what I have found: On the 1850 Logan VA census, there is a Polly White listed as a cook for a John Bailey's family. This Polly would be the right age, ergo the possibility of "Bailey"? Also in the 1850 Logan VA census, I found Mastin White who is married to a Susan (Neely) White. (I got the Neely from old birth records online.) No mention of Polly. On the 1860 Logan VA census, Mastin White with his wife Susan and children are living next door to Charles White (age 58) and Polly White (age 31) with a list of children, which includes Sarah E., age 3, just the right age for my Sarah E. On the 1870 Logan WV census, Polly White is listed with four children and is now living next door to Charles White. This makes me think (or wonder) that perhaps Charles White is her FATHER! Mastin White is also listed on this census with his wife Susan but they are no longer living next door to Polly and her children. Next mystery, in looking at some transcribed old marriages for Logan Co. I find the following: Oct 21 1858 Logan Co. David Hail Farmer 19 Susan White 17 Fayette Co. VA Logan Co. VA Logan VA Logan VA John Hail Mar Mastin White Ann This is the one and only reference I have found anywhere so far that places Mastin White with someone other than Susan. A typo? And Ann? Polly Ann? And last but not least, on some transcribed birth records for 1859 in Logan Co. I found the following: Not Named F June 10, 1859 born out of wedlock mother: Polly White father not listed This matches up perfectly with the 1860 census, where the last child listed (right after Sarah E.) is listed as "not named" age 11/12, F. Has anyone out there found out who this Polly Ann White married -- or did she ever marry at all? Any suggestions, comments, leads, etc. would be greatly appreciated! Hello, The only "Polly" White I have is a Mary ("Polly")White (B.10/11/1797), who Married a Mr. Otts. I have my White line back to Col. Henry White in Spartanburg, S.C. (I have been told his dad was Joseph White). Henry came to S.C. from Va.. If you are interested I will send you my file.
