Hi Jan, I would be interested in doing the same thing. Can you tell me how much it cost and what it involved doing. I assume that it is a mouth swab for a male family member. I would like to hear some more about it? A month or so ago I decided to go the DNA route and had a 37 marker test done by Family Tree DNA (no endorsement, just used 'em) and was immediately notified of a perfect 37 marker match with a White in San Francisco! Which basically means we have a 99% chance of having a common ancestor within the past few generations. We've exchanged info and he has traced his ggrandfather William Freeman White (b.1833) to Bradford Co. PA, which just happens to be next to Chemung Co. NY. We'll continue to sniff around in that area to see what we come up with. It's pretty exciting to go from an absolute brick wall to at least a remote possibility! It appears that our White line originated in the Bradford Co. / Chemung Co. area. Finally a glimmer of hope! The only reason I post this is because the DNA option may help those of us in the male line of Whites to broaden our genealogy horizons with an investment of a couple hundred dollars. I've spent three times that amount on genealogists I've hired in NY state! Also, YSearch.org is now a repository for DNA matches from DNA labs from all over the world, so if someone in England ends up having a 25 or 37 marker match with mine, we are both notified via email. Consequently, as the thousands of DNA tests are added in the future the possibilities of potential matches increase dramatically. I'll keep the list notified of how the research pans out. While it is against Rootsweb policy to discuss commercial offerings and prices, you can read about the White DNA project at http://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.asp?code=S83007&special=true Even though my dad was a White, I had to climb up and down the family tree to find a living male to be his proxy. Happily when I found him, my fourth cousins was delighted to help out with my hobby. It's very complicated. There are a number of companies and projects doing DNA testing. You might join the genealogy-dna list and the list for genealogy beginners - go to Rootsweb miscellaneous lists under genealogy or DNA. It actually takes some time to figure out, though if you get involved in a White project they'll simplify it for you considerably. I had mine done by Family Tree DNA (www.familytreedna.com). I think my cost was $259 for a 37 marker test and it would be less for a 25 marker test. The more markers though, the better chance of finding a closer match. My match with Larry White was 36 out of 37, which means we have a 95% chance of having a common ancestor in the last 10 generations or so. They send you a little "swab" kit that you use then return to them for testing.
