George B. White was born in Georgia according to all of the Federal Census reports. The first census report that the state of Georgia did not lose was in 1820. It finds him in Morgan County which is northern central Georgia. Roughly half way between Atlanta and Augusta. He has no family indicated but does have 8 slaves (4 male and 4 female) engaged in agriculture and manufacturing (blacksmith?). He may have been employed as an overseer. He is listed as 16 to 26 which would be a match for his listed birthday of 1795 - 1797. He would have been 23 - 25 years old. He has 10 slaves and 4 free Colored persons on his property. I would think he was an overseer employed by others but can not determine that. Based on the ages of his children in subsequent years it then appears that he met and married Harriet after 1820 and before their first child Amanda was born in 1826. Harriet was born in South Carolina. Her family name was White according to Family research done some 30 years ago by Walter White's father Trescott S. White. The Oscar B. White family was still alive and living in Belton, Texas and there was correspondence between them. 1820 Living nearby is Wiley White as Head of Household age 26 to 26 with a second male of the same age living in the same household. There is one female age 10 to 16. A second Wiley White age 16 to 26 is living in the area. Wiley seems to be a very popular name in this family as George B. White named one of his sons Wiley Sanford White and another William P. White. Wiley normally was used interchangeably with William and so this seems unusual. We find that Wiley Sanford White named one of his sons William Trescott White. The Trescott comes from the married name of Wiley Sanford White's wife Minerva Jane Brown's sister who married a Trescott, reported to be an indian. 1830 We next find George White in DeKalb County, Georgia in 1830. James and George are on page 19 an Elbert and David are on page 25. George would have been 33 -35 years old and there is one male age 30-40. There is one female age 20 - 30 and Harriett would have been 25. James White would have been 40 and that matches. Elizabeth would have been 24 and that is a match. 1840 Then in 1840 George(G.B.) and Harriett are in Harris county. There are several White families in the area that became Whitesville and I suspect at least some are kin. G.B. White is found on page 7. He is shown as 40-50 years of age and would have been 43-45. Harriett is shown as 20-30 and would have been 35. Have no idea if this was mismarked or someone guessed. The G. B. White family was in Harris County several years and their presence confirmed with other sources. Voted in as Justice of the peace, Executor of several estates etc. When the family moved to Bell County, Texas the son Wiley Sanford was initially employed as a lawyer. An unusual count on the census was 5 females age 10-15 years. These would not have been their children but may have been a combination. James White is living in the same district and is shown as being 40 - 50 years old. He would have been 50. The oldest female is shown as 30-40and Elizabeth would have been 34. 1850 When we find George White in Chickasaw County, Mississippi there is also a James White living close by. Then you discover that the oldest female child of James and his wife Elizabeth is Harriet White born Georgia and both Elizabeth White and Harriet White were born in South Carolina. It is possible these are sisters. The children are listed as Amanda, age 24; Wiley S., age 22; William P., age 17 ; and Mary F. age 12. The family did not stay long after 1850 as Wiley S. married Minerva Jane Brown in Belton November 20, 1854. They were married by Judge R.E.B. Baylor, for whom the University in Waco, Texas was named. 1860 we find George and Harriet with William P. and Mary (Mollie) in Marlin, Falls County, Texas running a hotel. It does not appear to be a long term arrangement as he did not sell his property in Belton and was still paying taxes on it. He owned two lots in Belton. They moved back to Belton and were there for the 1870 census. George and Harriett stayed in Bell County for the rest of their lives and were still alive for the 1880 census. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Michelle" <jessicas.mom@gmail.com> To: <white@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, March 28, 2007 7:44 AM Subject: Re: [WHITE] George B.
