    3. I have Beatie ancestors whom I regarded as cantankerous and thought it was because of their involvement in Scotland/England Borders warfare centuries ago. :-) Lately I've learned of a cantakerous will left by Richard White of Tazewell County, VA, father-in-law of Col Robert Madison Beatie of Smyth Co., VA, and grandfather-in-law of Capt Fountain Beatie, close friend and "right-hand man" to Col. John Singleton Mosby, the famous and fascinating Confederate guerilla leader. (The Gray Ghost TV series decades ago was based on his escapades.) Also ancestor of most all my close Beatie, McConnell, and Prickett kin, many of whom were more than a little feisty. The will was probated, I believe in Washington County, VA -- I haven't yet looked at the original. But I have a reference of Washington County, VA, Will book 5, p 285. Probate date was 6/20/1826. This is from Gordon Aronhime Papers (card indexes in re SW Va), which are now located at Library of Virginia. Card index and cards themselves can be viewed online (you may have to download TIFF viewer from LOV website). Cards are handwritten & sometimes detailed and hard to read. Slow to load even with broadband access. But he knew a LOT about most everybody in SW VA in 18-19century & is pretty good about indicating sources, largely primary. He died in 1970s. Go to http://www.lva.lib.va.us/dlp/index.htm and click on Electronic Card Indexes.
