Al and other interested parties, Don't take this as the absolute last answer on the subject, but I do believe you have to look to both the French and Spanish Archives for information on the lands of the coast of the Southern US, from Florida, to Louisiana and Texas to California. The land from Florida to Louisiana passed back and forth a couple of times between Spain and France. Many Americans settled in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida while these areas were still the territory of the French and Spanish.
