    1. [WHITE] Dempsey White of GA (and MS?)

    3. I am seeking information on a Dempsey White who was married by 1797 to Mary Smith, dau. of James Smith (d. 1799, Wilkes Co., GA). He is probably the "Demsey White" who pays taxes on 100 acres in Wilkes Co., GA (Capt. Thompson's Militia District). Other Whites paying taxes in this militia district are James White (1 poll only) and Willliam White (200 acres). This is the only year he appears in tax records in Wilkes Co. On 16 March 1801, he is among the heirs listed as receiving a share of James Smith's estate on behalf of his wife Mary. Mary White is named as a dau. in James Smith's 1797 will. I would like to know more about this couple and their descendants. From a post on GenForum, I found the following item; I have not been able to contact the submitter. I suspect it is the same Dempsey White. <quote from GenForum>: "Looking for info on ancestors and descendants of Demsey White, from Wilkes Cty GA to Miss in 1795 w/son Reuben. Reuben's son Nathan S. was b. 1811 and m. Narcissa Ann Gayden. The family later moved to Houston, TX. Dave Dixon <dixoneast@aol.com>" <unquote> I might also add that Mary Smith White had siblings John Smith (m. Prudence? Barron; d. Jones Co., GA), Joseph Smith, Nathan Smith (m. Sarah Foster, d. Wilkes Co., GA), Jacob Smith, Martha Smith (m. William Barron; d. Butts Co., GA; Sarah Smith (m. William Thompson); Elizabeth/Zechie Smith (m. William Chaffin; d. GA), and Rachel Smith (m. David Collum; moved to Amite Co., MS by 1806). If anyone has additional information on this Dempsey White, I would very much like to hear from you.
