I have helped others many times. I keep getting replies sent to me about the complaints only lately as conversation. I will ignore them from this point on. If they continue, I am unsubscribing. 3. I do not think you said anything wrong, and I do not believe you have anything to apologize for. So do not be so hard on yourself, and just let it go. The one or two that had a problem, is just that THEIR PROBLEM not yours. Infact they made a bigger deal out of it, not you. Fell better and have a great day Christine.... ----- Original Message ----- From: <Windico@aol.com> To: <white@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, October 29, 2006 2:47 PM Subject: Re: [WHITE] genealogybuff.com > > In a message dated 10/29/2006 8:20:23 A.M. 1. Re: [WHITE] Points of entry records before Castle Garden?
    2. Karen
    3. The following is a repeat of information I posted July 2006 to the Advanced Research List. Others also posted to this subject so you might want to look at the July Archives for that RootsWeb list. This posting was in response to a specific inquiry but hope it helps. Prior to 1820 there was NO requirement that non-U.S. citizen passengers be reported to anyone however there are many passenger lists that have survived. Karen >From 1820 to 1892 ALL ships arriving in the U.S. were required to submit lists of ALL non-U.S. citizen passengers and these lists were turned over to U. S. Customs. It didn't matter what port they arrived at or even if they had previously entered this country, just that they were not a citizen. Some of my ancestors made more than one trip back and forth between England and New Orleans in the 1840s and all of those entries are recorded and stored at the National Archives. Some of the lists have been published privately and are available in books at libraries as well as from some of the on-line services like Ancestry.com. I would imagine that LDS has the lists available on microfilm but I haven't tried that. The Ships's Passenger lists I have seen do not reflect whether or not the person(s) intended to stay and apply for citizenship. They are just records of their arrival and have varying amounts of information. Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) didn't begin creating their own records until 1892. NARA should have INS records for Portland beginning 1893. So it would appear that any non-citizen arriving before 1893 would have been reported but to Customs, not INS. After 1893 it would have been INS. And by the way, INS no longer exists. It was absorbed by Homeland Security and replaced in 2003 with United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

If someone uses a site that turns out to have a catch or not I think it's great that they share. I might learn something. Chewing them out for sharing what they learned (good or bad)is just not right. Not everyone is adept at websites or their inner workings. Anyone that thinks anything on the web is free needs to think again. The few family sites that are free are there because someone else paid the fees and choose to share. The other free ones may use anything that is posted and make this clear in their privacy statements. My point was that we need to be kinder to eachother. If people choose not to be kind I have no problem ignoring them. If anyone thought I was rude I apologized then and do so again here. Funny thing is I didn't think your post was rude. I did not address you or anyone else in the email. Had I thought you were rude or the only one I would have had the courtesy to reply to you alone or not at all. I simply replied yours just happened to be the email that was open when the other messages sunk in. I should have started a whole new email with no reference to whom I thought was not nice. I had surgery last week and guess I'm still a bit slow thinking, otherwise I would never have just hit reply. Christine ----- I really think that it is time to lay it to rest on this within the White @rootsweb list. It is soooo too bad that the fighting has to start over a poor choice of words, or an imagined or personally taken offense. 1. [WHITE] Points of entry records before Castle Garden?
    2. Ellen White
    3. Does anyone know of a site that has records of points of immigrants' entries before Castle Garden? Are there any records one could check of immigrants before 1830? Say from 1790-1810?? my husband's WHITE ancestors had to arrive in America before ca 1810, when his great grandfather; William White was born in VA, because census records all say, William was born in VA (course in 1810 or thereabouts that could cover a lot of area) and his parents were both born in Ireland. No idea if gr gr grandparents (parents of William) were married before or after arrival in America. I would be interested in the DNA testing that Jan mentioned, is there a web site to find info at? My husband's William WHITE born in VA about 1809-1811, may have gone to KY, as a young man, then into IN, where he lived from 1850-1880 census. 1850 he was married and family was in Bartholomew Co. IN, Sand Creek twp. then 1860-1880, family was in Sullivan Co. IN. lost track of William after 1880. William was married to a Martha ? by 1840, I surmise when 1st child was born, all children given as born in IN. the death certificate of a daughter, Vernilia, born about 1844-46, said she was born near Columbus, IN, as well as her mother's maiden name was GILLILAND/ GILLAND. A son, James William, born 1841 also was said to to have been born near Columbus, IN. That is the reason that I am searching for a male from my White line, but even with James having 8 sons at his death in 1812 in Warren Co., NC, I can't find a living male or another soul researching this White line. Good luck to you in finding your common White ancestor. 3. Greetings Group, I've been lurking and participating on this group for years and in spite of numerous postings of my White family, still have my brick wall Samuel White b.1816 NY. A month or so ago I decided to go the DNA route and had a 37 marker test done by Family Tree DNA (no endorsement, just used 'em) and was immediately notified of a perfect 37 marker match with a White in San Francisco! Which basically means we have a 99% chance of having a common ancestor within the past few generations. We've exchanged info and he has traced his ggrandfather William Freeman White (b.1833) to Bradford Co. PA, which just happens to be next to Chemung Co. NY. We'll continue to sniff around in that area to see what we come up with. It's pretty exciting to go from an absolute brick wall to at least a remote possibility! It appears that our White line originated in the Bradford Co. / Chemung Co. area. Finally a glimmer of hope! The only reason I post this is because the DNA option may help those of us in the male line of Whites to broaden our genealogy horizons with an investment of a couple hundred dollars. I've spent three times that amount on genealogists I've hired in NY state! Also, YSearch.org is now a repository for DNA matches from DNA labs from all over the world, so if someone in England ends up having a 25 or 37 marker match with mine, we are both notified via email. Consequently, as the thousands of DNA tests are added in the future the possibilities of potential matches increase dramatically. I'll keep the list notified of how the research pans out. 3. I was not rude but felt the need to say something. This list is about family research. If something is written and someone else does not approve or like what is said then they can do what I said before "unsubscribe" or use the delete button works nicely also. Everyone has a right to say their views. It is called "Freedom of Speech." However it is not called being nasty or rude. I do not have a problem in what you wrote. So please do not leave....Everyone is not the same......Take care..... ----- Original Message ----- From: "Chris" <ptownc@cox.net> To: <white@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, October 28, 2006 3:20 PM Subject: Re: [WHITE] genealogybuff.com I hope there is a kinder way we can communicate. I find after reviewing several messages I may be better off not finding White relatives through this venue. If someone writes something I don't care for I find delete works wonderfully. This biting at eachother is not accomplishing anything. If I annoyed you with this I apologize I can take my White research and book from my Great Aunt and look else ware for help and to help. 1. [WHITE] White-Pyle, Floyd Co., GA to Van Zandt Co., TX
    2. Elnora Wyrick
    3. I am still hoping to find parents and sibling for our Thomas White b. ca. 1825-TN & Sarah Ann Pyle b. ca. 1835-GA, they married 1849 in Floyd Co., GA, Children born in GA, AL, AR and TX- in 1870 they ended up in Van Zandt Co., TX, where Sarah Ann died in about 1873. Thomas lived until 1905. I do not find them on any census until they get to TX in 1870. Children's names in birth order; Elizabeth Jane, m. John W. Valentine-stayed in VZ Co., TX; Margaret Frances, m. John G McBee-moved to Carter Co., OK; Peter; Nothing more known after 1870; Sarah L, Nothing more known after 1870; Thoms A, Nothing more known after 1870; Lewis Harrison, m. Jimmie Wicker-moved to OK, d. by 1910; James, Nothing more known after 1870; John O. White, m. Mary Polly Lee, stayed in Van Zandt Co., TX; There are several White families that would work age & location wise- but I cannot connect our Thomas to any of them. It is almost for sure that my Sarah Ann Pyle is <<<NOT the daughter of Peter Pyle and Mariah Davis>>>- so need some new suggestions if any are available.
