Thanks for posting the Younger information, Eva. Interesting as to how the two families may have interacted over the years, as a branch of the Bruce family was at Laurence, had a hotel by the river, and were not touched by the gang per the "History of Laurence" which is posted on the web, as "they had treated the gang members well when some went ahead of the raid to spy out the town. The following is a Xerox copy of something that has been printed/typed. I do not see a source of what it was copied from so please understand that I can not verify anything on it or refer you to anything other than what the document says. Page 11 "The Younger family plays an important part in the early history of the west. Many legends and myths have been told about them and books were written about the family. Many of these based on legends. So it is hard to determine the difference between facts and fiction. Legends are durable things, and are not without value as part of the folklore of a people. On the other hand, I do not subscribe to the school of professional so-called "debunkers", the truth, yes, but what is the truth? But in the end of the legends, itself may come nearer the actual truth than the "debunker" who writes from the dim distance of decades. Here we will first deal with the proven, established facts. That the Younger's, James, and Dalton's were related, either by blood, marriage or association, and that Cole Younger, and his brothers were the sons of Harry and Beersheba (Sullivan) Younger and Harry is the son of Charles and Sarah (Purcell) Younger. Charles Younger - Charles Younger, Will, B-W 524-528, Independence, MO, Jackson, Co., Nov 11, 1854. Charles Younger deceased record, Apr 7, 1855 Children of Charles and Sarah (Purcell) Younger: Harry W. Younger - wife of Mr. Buster Adeline S. Younger - wife of Lewis Dalton, parents of Dalton Bros. Coleman Younger - Cole Younger was named for his Uncle Coleman (and grandfather of the notorious outlaw Jonnie Ringo (Ringgold) The children of Charles and Sarah Younger, mentioned in Sarah's will, State of Missouri and County of Clay, Liberty Court House, Nov 1858, probated Jan 11, 1859, will book d, P 240-244 Virginia, Jacob Creek, Lucy S. Buster, and Henry W. (Harry) Where does this Will com in? In the Will it states "Given and bequeath to Sophia L. Wilson, Charles F. Wilson, Mary L. and Martha L. Jefferson, Bruce, Sophronia, my children by Parmelia Wilson, sometimes known as Parmelia Younger, (bequests specifics omitted) also- slave Elizabeth age 22, and her 2 children, Catharine and Simipson, I give the name of Younger. John Younger, killed his first man at age 14, he was shot and killed by W.J. Allen (Capt Lull) a Pinkerton, Dec Mar 17, 1874 is buried in the Yeater Cemetary, St. Clare County, MO. Cole Younger Paul I Wellman, in his book "Dynasty of Western Outlaws, claims that the Younger boys were cousins of the James boys. I am not here to "debunk" the claim at this time, but I do think it merits a little more genealogical research on the families. He also claims that Cole Younger was the father of Pearl Younger. Pearl, was the daughter of Myra Belle Shirley (Belle Starr). Cole always denied he was the father. If his denial is true, why did Belle name her ranch in Oklahoma "Younger Bend"? There is no record of their marriage. Cliff Robertson, who played the part of Cole Younger in the move "The Great Northfield Raid" has this to say "Jesse James would have been a picnic for any good Psychiatrist", "He was either schizo, or paranoid, or hyperthyroid", or maybe all three, but he is the one who made the history books. Cole Younger, Jesse's lieutenant, was completely overlooked. Cole, according to Mr. Robertson, had the real vision, and Jesse James was just an outlaw. This opinion is shared by many of the James historians. Cole was a natural leaders. Jesse on the other hand, was a bent character, he was a sadistic killer with out too many brains, and it's kind of ironic that he got the credit for the Younger masterminding. (Cole was against the Northfield raid.) Mr. Robertson, sites proof for his acquration, that the James gang never functioned as a unit after the Northfield, bank robbery or after Cole Younger was sentence(d) to the Minn. Penitentiary for 25 years for his part in the raid. Other historians have this to say - "Big and portly Cole Younger, had a great interest in religion, but a greater interest in banditry. One thing they most all agree that he was the biggest liar in the county. I am neutralj, so take your choice. Much of the sympathy for the Yougner boys stemmed from the fact that their father, Henry Washington Younger, had been killed on the old Westport (Kansas City) Road in Jackson County by ruffians believe to be Kansas Jayhawkers, lead by Col. Jim Lane. And their mother was forced to set fire to her home shortly after. It is true that the Younger's suffered greatly from the action of those who were against them, but many other families also suffered. Laurence Kansas This brings us to the raid by Quantril on Laurence Kansas. Why was this action taken? Osceola, the county seat of St. Clare County, MO is located on the Osage River near the mouth of the Sac River, and near the Kansas border. Osceola had been burned and ravished by Col Jim Lane and his Kansas Jayhawkers, on Sept 23, 1861. And in retaliation, Cole and Jim Younger had ridden with Quantril Guerrillas when they destroyed Laurence, the hom town of Jim Lane (Jim Lane escaped). The objective was to burn Laurence to the ground, and to kill all the people who lived there. 143 men, women and children were murdered, and Laurence was burned to the ground. Northfield, Minn Robbery Ref Thomas A. Frazer - the ten men who took part in the robbery were Frank and Jesse James, Cole, Jimand Bob Younger Cell Miller, Bill Chadwell, Charlie Pitt. Is there any idea, or reality, that this Jack county John White is related to the John White who was the agriculture commissioner for Texas and later the Democratic National Committee chairman? His family is from that area, including adjacent Clay county Texas. If so, please, let's collaborate our common information. Richard Brock Linda Jenkins wrote: >I'm searching for a John J. Syracuse, NY March 7, 1977 " I have worked on the Perdue, Perdew, Purdue, etc surname for the past seven years. Perdue was my maiden name but until I began a search for my ancestry in 1970, I never knew another family with the name Perdue. Of course, I had heard many stories & legends - some started out to be erroneous but others fell into place and I will be glad to do anything that I can to help you. However, none of the names in your background are familiar to me, that is history wise. I do own a number of census records, mostly the 1880 soundex and will be glad to search my books for a connection. In the meantime - I hope that you will write a brief history of your ancestors - telling me where they lived (states) and whatever else you can about them. To date - I have not filled out any family sheets but am happy to give you my lineage. My gr.gr.gr.grandfather, Meshack Perdue, born circa 1755 moved to Franklin County, VA and died there in 1838. He was married to Eleanor Dillon, dau. Of James. His son was my gr. Gr. Grandfather, Isaiah, who md. Mildred Wingo - dau. Of James and Catherine Wingo. Isaiah's son was my gr. Grandfather, John Meadows Perdue, b. 1816 md. Mary (Polly) Ward, dau. Of Dr. Asa Ward and Susan Sink (Zinke - a German name). John Meadows and Mary (Polly) Ward Perdue migrated to Wayne County., W.Va. and my grandfather, Dewitt Clinto(n) Perdue & my father, Dewitt T. Perdue, were born there but migrated to Ashland, KY about 1881. (This is Boyd County, KY) and I was born there in 1921. I do know of several other who might be of help to you. Just brief us a little with whatever you have and we will see if we might be able to locate your Susan. Most Sincerely, Sherie (Perdue) Meola" Eva
I know this info is slightly off track from the Whites but since many of them were co-located this would help me on my search It is interesting reading nonetheless. I hope you all dont mind but may be of help to someone out there. This is a page copied and indexed from an existing book unknown name. In 1760 the father of James Henry (6 yrs old), his father Robert Ozment and William Anderson Ozment (4 yrs old) moved his family to France. An aunt of James and William, named Elizabeth, had married William Edding. They had a son, William, called Billy. When James was 22 yrs old, the American Revolution broke out. Thank that was nice of you to do.... Happy Halloween. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Carolyn White" <carolynlwhite@yahoo.com> To: <white@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, October 31, 2006 8:56 AM Subject: [WHITE] White Line How To Copy & Paste Move your cursor over to the beginning of the text you want to copy, hold down on the left 'clicker' of your mouse and drag the cursor over and down the text to highlight it. After you have highlighted the portion of the text you want to copy. On your keyboard press and hold "Ctrl" then press "c" and release both keys to copy the text to the 'clipboard' in your computer. Open the page you want to copy the text to, left click once till your cursor is flashing on the location where you want the beginning of the text to appear. On your keyboard press and hold "Ctrl" then "v" and release both keys, to paste the text from the 'clipboard' to your page. If you hold these keys too long, you might paste the copy more than once. If you do, you can delete a portion of text by highlighting it, and then press the 'Delete' key on your keyboard. This is sometimes quicker than pressing and holding the 'Delete' key. If you are copying and pasting an underscored email address for example, carolynlwhite@yahoo.com. Move the cursor to the right side of the email address where your cursor appears to be an 'I', (not over it where it's a pointing finger) before highlighting, moving your cursor from right to left. Then proceed with the shortcut keys mentioned above to copy and paste. If you have an older PC and the above procedure fails to work, after highlighting the text, left click directly on the word "Edit" in the Toolbar (if you are working with a Word document) at the top left, in the dropdown left-click on the word "Copy" to copy the text to the 'clipboard' in your PC. Go to the page you want to copy it to, then left click once till your cursor is flashing on the location where you want the beginning of the text, then click on "Edit" at the top, in the dropdown click on paste, to paste the text from the 'clipboard' to your webpage, email, Word document, spreadsheet, etc. Keyboard Shortcut Keys Ctrl and A = All Crtl and B = Bold Crtl and C = Copy Crtl and F = Find Crtl and I = Italics Crtl and N = New Crtl and O = Open Crtl and P = Print Crtl and U = Underline Ctrl and X = Cut Crtl and Y = Redo Ctrl and Z = Undo ~ Courtesy of Steve White ~ motorcoachoperator@earthlink.net Reference: Message: 2 Date: Mon, 30 Oct 2006 11:36:41 -0700 From: "Alli" <iamcheroke@filertel.com> Subject: Re: [WHITE] SPAM-LOW: Letters and such - Moses, Morgan, El White, George, Carrie, etc. To: <eva@mefulton.com>, <white@rootsweb.com> Message-ID: <00a201c6fc52$58ed1c90$3c9962d0@KAGSDJ> Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed; charset="iso-8859-1"; reply-type=original Rootsweb doesn't allow attachment's to be sent to list's. No date or address only that it is from Mrs. Gurney, Eddins Cemetery, located at the Elmer Rowland Farm, Lebanon, Tennessee Approximately ½ mile from Leesville Pike. Ozment b. 1809 (July 2, 1809) b. 1800 d. 7/10/1835 d. 12/1845 m 5 June 1821 I found this in my records from The Billy Eddings - could be William of which I have numerous records of a William Eddings, but as yet cant fit them together. I need the father of Caswell Eddings & any info on Edney, his wife. She was born in Tenn., him in N. Carolina. They had children in Limestone Co, AL and Wright Co., MO. One child was Caswell Dennis, my grandfather. I have names of his brothers and sisters from census. Sorry not to be of more help. Thanks for your letter, Mrs. Gurney. PS I tried to copy the census records like they were written. My writings is bad enough but some of the census takers were terrible. There is a book of the descendents of Richard Ozment. Probably the one on the 1830 Wilson Co Tenn. census. I read it. I guess Richard was an uncle to our John Jasper. He, Richard, was not part of the bunch who went to Wilmer and I dont believe. In case you dont know, the Eddings were related. Billy? Eddings was supposed to be a cousin to the two Ozment boys who came over here with General Robert Lafayette to help George Washington fight the British. Im watching for a marriage record of John Jaspers marriages to the Morgan girls but so far no luck. If we could even find the one for Margaret we could prove some things. The list of children you sent me looks pretty good for both mothers. You dont have a Margaret, 17 years old 1850 but that could be who you are calling Ridley who married Hodges & Hill. Murdock McIntosh was the last of Anns children and was born in Tenn. And John L, the first of Margarets children was born in Tenn. Ill look in Tenn. for a marriage record. I lost my 1830 Gulford Co. record. Ill do it again then send you a copy. Eva
It's ALWAYS good to share this kind of information. It goes into the archives and may be useful in the future to someone who doesn't even know yet that they're looking for Whites. And typing it was even better than a scan because it is now "searchable." I will contact you privately about the Younger/James/Dalton information. Karen Illinois
I have some other interesting letters about Ozment's, Evans, Eddings/Eddins, Ridley, Morgan, Younger/James/Dalton, and Gillard/Gilliard. Is anyone interested in this info? I think I am out of the White Line of letters, though I don't know if it helped anyone out or not. Eva
Is anyone researching John and Samuel White who in 1805 appear on the tax records of Greene County and are later found in Jefferson County, Tennessee. At this point, I know nothing else about these men. I think John might be the father of Samuel. I am particularly interested in the children of these men. Or, for that matter anything else anyone can tell me about them. Thanks, Marleen Van Horne
"Jul 1979 Katie Johns here from St. Paul, Minn. I am also researching McFarland people. Maybe if we exchange a few letters we can be of help to each other. I do not charge for my work, just work on an exchange basis. I have a David Smith who md Martha McFarland son of James and Eliz Smith Lahead Lunenburg Co., VA. Also Eliz Smith MacFarland, daughter of Abraham Smith, Dinwiddie Co., VA, wife of James. She was wi Lahead. From Old Free State Vol II, Lunenburg, VA. If you have any other names you want me to check, I'll be pleased to do so, especially if you can help me on my flora McFarland b ca 1782 in SC who md 1797 a Mr. McDuffie and who lived in Chesterfield Dist, SC 1810 and 1820 as a widow, (age 26.45) both years. She had three daughters, two md in SC and Eliz who md Coleman Ford, Nancy who md Dempsey Rivers and Mary who md 1850 in DeKalb Co., GA David Rosser (Roper) his second wf. I have been thinking that Flora's parents probably came from NC to SC. Lived in the mountains. A story comes down about flora riding to the Mill on her pony, when Tories took the grain she was taking to the mill and would have taken her pony, but the Miller rescued her. She was alongside a swift moving stream which doesn't appear to be a regular feature in Chesterfield Dist SC more like in a far western area of SC or even NC. I have many McFarland families and will be waiting to hear from you, even if it is a "no" reply. Regards, Katie." Eva
