Replies appreciated from anyone who identifies with the following. My White line starts with a William A. White, supposedly an officer in the Civil War, possibly on the southern side. He first appears in Buffalo, NY in when he marries Adell M. Dudley circa 1864. William's last known location was New Jersey with his son Norman, b. 1888 and died in WWI. William bought a farm in partnership with a Charles White who was married to Minerva. William and Adell had six children, including a son Floyd White, b June 1886, who married Elvira Heinemann in 1906, they also had six children. Floyd and Elvira lived for many years on a farm in East Elma, New York. The street they lived on was full of White's, all apparently related, though I have no information on anyone but Floyd. Hi, Billy White Bolton, I saw your post on the white rootsweb bulletin board. I believe I'm correct in noting that although the potato, which originated in the South American Andes, was known in Ireland (perhaps from Sir Walter Raleigh's plantation there), the tubers apparently weren't a staple food until the 1800s. That said, immigration from a island not well-endowed with natural resources appears to have been frequent. It is wise to look first in the islands where Columbus first saw landfall, the West Indies, for that was the hub of merchant activity in the early 1700s between Western Europeans and the U. S. colonies (Alexander Hamilton, for example, was from Scots merchant stock in St. Croix). Note also that emigrants from County Mayo in the early 1700s settled in Jamaica and Monserrat. The same is true for the so-called Ulster-Scots (the northern Ireland province) who immigrated to the Danish West Indies and/or America in the early 1700s. The Irish were also prevalent in Newfoundland beginning in the early 1500s. Cheers everyone from a sunny NC Laura On Nov 25, 2006, at 1:01 AM, white-request@rootsweb.com wrote: > Bob White, > The great potato famine occurred in Ireland in 1845-1849. I am Mary White Dunnam. My 5ggrandfather was a Joseph White from Augusta Co.,Virginia he had 3 sons, the County Court Order Book August 24-1754 showes William White bound to David HaysNivember 20-1754 Joseph White says his Child was bound to David Hays when he was absent and is capable of raising his son. The court Ordered the child returned to his Father.*. Joseph White left Virginia Prior o 1790 and went to the area along the French Broad River in North Carolina. (probably Henderson Co.). The people in Augusta Co. were mainly Scotch -Irish and probley the White family as well. do not have proof that this william was the same William White of Franklin, Co. Ga. or he was the the Father of that Willliam, We are fairly suret hat there were three sons that came to Franklin Co. about the time it was opened in 1784; William --- probably the eldest Jeptha Born between 1760-1770 Abel Born between 1769-1775 I can not find a spouse for joseph. . The Chalkly Lyman, Chronicles of the Scotch- Irish settlement in Virginia, Genealogical Plublishing, Co. 1980 has the Court Order Book on line. William White came to Franklin Co. Ga.sometime around 1790 he applied for a Hearright Grant from the state of Georgina in 1790. He received 140 acres on the Estanola Creek next to David Hays and Williamson. He bought additional land from Daniel Morgan. In 1802 he paid txes on 260 acresof land. His wife was Mary, who may have been that daughter of Obediah Hooper. Obediah Hooper was a resident of Franklin , Co. who lived in the Estanola Creek area. William died about 1808, he did not leave a will but his estate was inventoried on June 9,1808. I have a list of the Items. A Mary White administered his estate and Abel White was one of the appraisers of his estate. Mary Sold off some of the land but paid taxes on 100 acres in Franklin , co.and 200 acres of land William drew in the 1807 land lottery in Jones cO, Ga, MAry became Ill in 1831 and drew up her will. She must have remined ill for for the last 10 years of her life since her sons conducted business for her after that date. I I have about 3 more pages that may be of instrest to some White some where. Bob, I am interested in what you find because my family came at least by the 1830s and it was suppose to be because of the Potato famine. Have you looked under Scotch/Irish? I saw this same message and wondered the same. I was calling some names some years back in northern states of name "Brannon. " I got one that told me his line had come from the potatoe famine time in Ireland in 1846, so I had it first hand from a descendant. I think the person made a typo error. My John Brannon b 1745 came here in 1763 on a boat after a disagreement when 18 yr's old with his dad name Patrick Brannon. Not with a potatoe famine family. Dex, Maybe you can help me find the parents of my Caroline White who married J. E. Haney in TN. They had two daughters, Mary in 1856 and Martha in 1858, in TN before moving to TX. Daughter, Harriett Frances born in TX in 1860. Johanna was born in 1863 and Caroline died in childbirth. Joe Haney died of measles on his way home from CSA for birth of Johanna. I know what happened to the 4 daughters, but I have no information on Caroline's parents' names. According to family history, Caroline's mother married Joe's father in later years, but would not come to TX because "the women die there." Caroline may have had two sisters, Lizzy and Frances. One married a CSA officer and the other never married. Any connection to any of your Whites? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
