The Quimby anniversary book did not say anything much about Charles White, but a little about Hicks; ......Mrs. E.Bowers.....visited Hicks at the jail (Cherokee) . They (Hicks and Bowers) wanted to get married, but as they had no witnesses to speak for them, it was impossible for the clerk to issue a license..... (Mrs. E. Bowers was also reported to be the wife of a Sheldon (IA) blacksmith. (So evidently Hicks had been around that area anyway, Sheldon is north of Sioux City on Highway 75--maybe 50-60 miles.)Cherokee and Quimby are north and east of Sioux City. Hicks was headed south on his way to Omaha and Kansas City later after the robbery to get away, and had taken Mrs. Bowers with him to Omaha, then had her returned to Sioux City, and he went on to Kansas City where Hicks was arrested. In one of Hicks pockets was a letter directed to a woman in Sioux City giving a description of the tools wanted and how they could be worked into the jail. (for escape purposes) Hicks said they had "come out of Sioux City, IA...before the robbery, and afterwards, he and White had gone back to Sioux City, Ia. I have Hicks and Whites in the family. From where did they Hicks and Whites come from.

This bank robbery info was interesting reading, but never caught my interest because I knew /hoped my husband's WHITE ancestors had never been to Iowa, except his father as a traveling salesmen who was too strait laced to rob a bank. Then it dawned on me that my side of the family had a connection to this bank robbery, and I knew that somewhere I had a Quimby 75 year anniversary book that had this info in it. This book has quite an interesting write up on the robbery in it that had occurred Dec. 16, 1903. Briefly- when the robbers escaped, they stole a horse team, buggy, harness from the brother of my great grandfather .Great grandfather was Ira Crawford, and his brother, Henry had a stable barn in near the bank in Quimby from whom they stole the team and buggy. Ira Crawford was a farmer, and Henry had a general store in Quimby and his wife Eva (Clites) was a dressmaker and hatmaker and had a little room in the store. Charles White was called; Charles "Jersey Slim" White, There are a number of pages on the topic, it likely could be order through inter library loan from Cherokee, IA, The article says, Jan. 19, 1904, only 36 days from their crime, the prisoners were taken to Anamosa to start serving their 7 year sentences. A 4th robber-Wilson ,m remained behind in the county jail in Cherokee, IA. One of the robbers took the authories over their escape route to Plymouth Co. IA where they had hidden the money in a haystack on the Henderson place. The robbers had only spent about $500 of the money. Not my Whites, but someone was asking about this White, who belonged to a gang, a few months back on the White list. You might find in the Archives on a search. My paternal grandmother was Martha E. White, daughter of Andrew B. White and Cassandra Hayse. She was born in KY in 1868 and married John W. Brown. Their son, George W. "Dootin" Brown was my father. Several of my family members have a genetic disorder which affect the whole skeletal system, including the spine. My father and at least one of his brothers had it, I have it and two of my three children have it. It is called Cleidocranial Dysplasia. I also have a condition where a vertebra has slipped out of line in my lower back. This condition is called Spondylolisthesis. Some of my other cousins have what may be symptoms of the CCD. HMM, my mother had severe problems with "uncle arther", (she is now deceased) and so do I. How ever my father is not a White. Mom's mother was a White. So I do not think that I can help with it? I do have White family still living however. I am not sure if any of them would be apt to help or not though.
