I asked earlier today for information on Susan White. As I looked at the census page again where I found her, it dawned on me that the missing (deceased?) husband may be related to two other White families- Mathew age 33 and Osborn age 37- in as much as these three family entries are families numbers 641, 642, and 643 on the same census page. Any information would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks, Woody Rice
The 1860 census of Anderson Co. SC lists a Susan White age 46) as head-of-household. There are 4 Children listed- Charles (18), Stephen (15), Martha (10), and James (4). Susan, Martha, and James W. again appear in the 1870 census. A James again appears in the 1880 Anderson Co. census with wife and 1 son. (The 1880 image is extremely difficult to read). My ggf, Charles was listed as 28 on the 1870 census of DeKalb Co. Alabama-birthplace SC; and again (spelled Charly) as 38 in the 1880 census of Anderson, SC. Charles subsequently brought his family to Upsher Co., TX. I have 1887 and 1888 county tax records on him. Until I found Susan's record two nights ago, we had no clue to my GGF's parents. I feel Susan may be his mother. Does anyone out there have knowledge of, or connect to, Susan in any way? Charles White has been a HUGH brick wall for me to this point. Thanks for ANY information. George B. White was born in Georgia according to all of the Federal Census reports. The first census report that the state of Georgia did not lose was in 1820. It finds him in Morgan County which is northern central Georgia. Roughly half way between Atlanta and Augusta. He has no family indicated but does have 8 slaves (4 male and 4 female) engaged in agriculture and manufacturing (blacksmith?). He may have been employed as an overseer. He is listed as 16 to 26 which would be a match for his listed birthday of 1795 - 1797. He would have been 23 - 25 years old. He has 10 slaves and 4 free Colored persons on his property. I would think he was an overseer employed by others but can not determine that. Based on the ages of his children in subsequent years it then appears that he met and married Harriet after 1820 and before their first child Amanda was born in 1826. Harriet was born in South Carolina. Her family name was White according to Family research done some 30 years ago by Walter White's father Trescott S. White. The Oscar B. White family was still alive and living in Belton, Texas and there was correspondence between them. 1820 Living nearby is Wiley White as Head of Household age 26 to 26 with a second male of the same age living in the same household. There is one female age 10 to 16. A second Wiley White age 16 to 26 is living in the area. Wiley seems to be a very popular name in this family as George B. White named one of his sons Wiley Sanford White and another William P. White. Wiley normally was used interchangeably with William and so this seems unusual. We find that Wiley Sanford White named one of his sons William Trescott White. The Trescott comes from the married name of Wiley Sanford White's wife Minerva Jane Brown's sister who married a Trescott, reported to be an indian. 1830 We next find George White in DeKalb County, Georgia in 1830. James and George are on page 19 an Elbert and David are on page 25. George would have been 33 -35 years old and there is one male age 30-40. There is one female age 20 - 30 and Harriett would have been 25. James White would have been 40 and that matches. Elizabeth would have been 24 and that is a match. 1840 Then in 1840 George(G.B.) and Harriett are in Harris county. There are several White families in the area that became Whitesville and I suspect at least some are kin. G.B. White is found on page 7. He is shown as 40-50 years of age and would have been 43-45. Harriett is shown as 20-30 and would have been 35. Have no idea if this was mismarked or someone guessed. The G. B. White family was in Harris County several years and their presence confirmed with other sources. Voted in as Justice of the peace, Executor of several estates etc. When the family moved to Bell County, Texas the son Wiley Sanford was initially employed as a lawyer. An unusual count on the census was 5 females age 10-15 years. These would not have been their children but may have been a combination. James White is living in the same district and is shown as being 40 - 50 years old. He would have been 50. The oldest female is shown as 30-40and Elizabeth would have been 34. 1850 When we find George White in Chickasaw County, Mississippi there is also a James White living close by. Then you discover that the oldest female child of James and his wife Elizabeth is Harriet White born Georgia and both Elizabeth White and Harriet White were born in South Carolina. It is possible these are sisters. The children are listed as Amanda, age 24; Wiley S., age 22; William P., age 17 ; and Mary F. age 12. The family did not stay long after 1850 as Wiley S. married Minerva Jane Brown in Belton November 20, 1854. They were married by Judge R.E.B. Baylor, for whom the University in Waco, Texas was named. 1860 we find George and Harriet with William P. and Mary (Mollie) in Marlin, Falls County, Texas running a hotel. It does not appear to be a long term arrangement as he did not sell his property in Belton and was still paying taxes on it. He owned two lots in Belton. They moved back to Belton and were there for the 1870 census. George and Harriett stayed in Bell County for the rest of their lives and were still alive for the 1880 census. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Michelle" <jessicas.mom@gmail.com> To: <white@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, March 28, 2007 7:44 AM Subject: Re: [WHITE] George B. White's Lake near Highlands was named for Jesse White, It was on his original grant as part of the "Old 300". He was the son of William and Amy White, born in St. Martinville area of LA. After Williams death in 1805, Amy moved with the "old 300" group in 1824 to TX with some of her children to the Highlands area (initially called White's Settlement) the name was changed to Highlands when they opened a Post Office there and found that another town was using the White Settlement name.. They claimed lands on both sides of the San Jacinto River from slightly below what is now I-10 to above Crosby, TX Some of her children were Reuben White, Jesse White, George White, William White, Mary/William Whitlock, Rebecca/Presley Gill, Henry White and others. James Taylor White of present day Chambers County was her brother-in-law. Many other members of the White and related families moved to Texas a little later and claimed lands in east and central Texas. Reuben's Rifle in on display at the San Jacinto Battleground Museum. I am always looking for the parents of John W. White b. 1786 in VA md. Suzanna Bradley. Went to Wilson Co. as a very young man abt. 18 with Suzanna's parents as a master of slaves. Thank you Linda Holmes White
Has anyone on the list ever run across a Wilse White, b. Tennessee in 1849? Wilse was the son of Eligah White, b. NC abt. 1821 and was in TN by 1850 or earlier. Wilse had a brother, William Augustus "Gus", b. 1857, sister Eliza Caroline, b. 1858, brother Johnny, b. 1858 (twin of Eliza), and a younger brother who died very young. After yankee sympothizers captured Eligah in 1863 and took him to prison, Wilse, Gus, and Johnny went to Texas and/or Oklahoma. The family story is that Wilse married an Indian woman and settled in Oklahoma. Any help would truly be appreciated. Joyce White Jones

Eva, I really don't have verified information on your White lineage. Is there a verified male White in your lineage that could participate in a DNA project? That might be your best shot. As I mentioned to John, a James Taylor White and possibly a Thomas, sons of William White and Sophia Davenport are believed to have located in Caldwell Co., KY. There appears to be some census and Will information to verify that. It's in my files somewhere ...and after moving all my files cabinets to make room for the grandchildren over the Christmas Holidays...all I can say is that they are in one of eight four drawer file cabinets in my garage. Hopefully by next Christmas all will be back in my office and computer room where I can get at them. There is a mystery in the mention of Caldwell Co. in my mind. William, Sophia and family relocated from SC to Burke Co., NC. The area where most of their land was located is now Caldwell Co., NC. This opens a big question mark for me. The will had names of James Taylor's Children in the KY Will. You think your confused. After nearly 40 years of searching family records...I'm still stumped and hitting brick walls. Some of our searches may never be solved. I have decided that if we go back far enough. we're all cousins. Nice to hear from you cousin, Jim --- Eva Fulton <eva@mefulton.com> wrote: > Jim, I've been following the dialogue that you and > John have been having. > My grandmother's grandfather's name was George (T.) > White from KY b 1854. > George's parents are unknown though his son's mother > appears on the death > certificate as Cynthia Green. Jim, I've been following the dialogue that you and John have been having. My grandmother's grandfather's name was George (T.) White from KY b 1854. George's parents are unknown though his son's mother appears on the death certificate as Cynthia Green. Mary E or Lizzie (b 1856 IL) appears as George's wife on OK census records. I have not found a George White with wife Cynthia on any census records. My grandmother was Flora Lorena White, daughter of Elzie Hampton White and Francis Eller Harris (Harris' married Ozment family) and also related to Gene Autry (the singer). My basis for writing is to see if my George is any relation to yours or their relatives as I am clueless as to how my George came to OK (Tishomingo/Ravia area). If we don't match, that's fine, but worth a try.
