Dear fellow listers, In seeing the exchange about "Maggie Whites" in the midwest, I thought I'd encourage you to get the microfilm of the local newspapers of the era. They are rich with information and have cleared up many a mystery for me. Unlike our present newspapers, the ones from the mid-1800s, early 1900s contain lovely personal information, such as who got married at whose home (and who attended), even sometimes who gave what wedding gifts. They recount who bought whose home, who rode the train "home" to visit relatives (with names and places back East), who has gone away to which school, who built a fence around his/her property, whose barn burnt, who got divorced (frequently jury trials, covered by the local news media), who of course died (even if they no longer lived in that place), whose sister came to visit, etc., etc. Your local librarian can help you look up the name of the newspaper, even if you can't find it when you search "[town name, state]" +newspaper in your favorite search engine, and then order the film. I can't tell you how much is lost when people who have "brick walls" simply rely on databases and census records for their info. The newspapers are a treasure trove! I found one marriage and the death later of the bride and infant son, about whom I had never heard (made marriage three for that ancestor.) My James was born 1809 in New Brighton, Beaver co, PA. And his middle initial is M, not F. Insofar as I know, they came directly to the area now Meigs and Vinton co, but was Gallia Co at the time. Have you gotten your grandfather on the census? It should give you a place of birth. Also Muskingum co has many books out. Our library has most of them. My father didn't know his gr grandfather either. he said they worked from sun up to sun-down, and no one had time to talk about family much. If you don't have access to the Muskingum books, let me know. i volunteer on Wed afternoons and could probably look in the index to see if there is anything to help. I have a copy of Robert D. Sheehan's White Family Heritage, and Beyond The Pilgrims, plus the White Record Abstracts. He says he was "somewhat successful" in tracing the White Family back to First Century Ancient Wales. He has a White Family Bible given him by his grandmother and which he took very poor care of (his words) and it is now not restorable. He says it could not be William & Susannah's because the first marriage recorded is Peregrine and Sarah Bassett in 1646. This all to say its very interesting reading, for the history if nothing else. Unfortunately, none of these books helped me at all. Really sorry our Maggie's don't appear to be related. I hope to get up to the library at McArthur (a great gal has spent her life making notebooks of obits, articles and families!!! WHITE on the Final Roll, andheis listed as Cherokee. Age 57, male, fullblood, family census card no.7507, roll no. 17766. According to Fee Armstrong Cogburn: " Edward was disowned by his familybecause Mary Jane Catharine White had too much Indian blood in her". Fromother sources Edwards mother and all but one sibling disowned him. It isnot known if his father disowned him but is doubtful as his family hadIndian ancestry also. It is thought that this may have been a cause for thedivorce of his parents. His father later married a part Indian womanMargaret White Clanton who is thought to be a relative of Mary Janes. This comes from Jim Berry a member of the Berry Research Team. Some believe this is why his parents divorced after many years. The otherfunny thing is he married a White relative of Mary Janes... a distant cousinperhaps who was a widow. This I found in the book John Berry and His Children. I have a great-great grandfather Jary White Jr. who was born in Mt. Holly, Vermont in 1809 then moved with his father Jary White Jr. to Fountian Green, Hancock County, Ill. in the early 1800's. He married a Laura Eaton from Alabama. Jary White Sr. said his family came from Wales and some members of the family said it was the same area of Wales that Mayflower Whites came from. If anyone out there has researched the White family from Wales I would like to hear from them. the New ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jacquie" <mrsstrong1@yahoo.com> To: <white@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, April 09, 2007 7:09 PM Subject: [WHITE] Whites in Union Co., -Southern Illinois > To Darlene: > I have an unknown White in Southern IL that I have been trying to place > for over ten years.....I wonder if she is connected to your line. Well I have a Maggie White (no middle name given), but I don't think she is your Maggie as I have her marrying a Charles Northcutt. She lived 1882 to 1955. But don't know where..... Another branch was out of Kentucky, so that might have been her home state. To Darlene: I have an unknown White in Southern IL that I have been trying to place for over ten years.....I wonder if she is connected to your line. Her name was Serena White Hudspeth/Hedspeth....wife to Thomas H. Hudspeth.......I was told they married in the 1830....they are my gg-grandparents. They had a large family. One of their daughters, Alabama, is my g-grandmother. I think she was born about 1860, which makes me think they may have married later........they lived in Vienna, Johnson Co., IL while Alabama was a young girl......Interestingly enough, her descendents went into Union County, IL..possibly to be near other relatives? I have never known why they chose Union. What more do you know about your Whites? Jacquie in FL Marguerite Crist Calvin <margaret@jced.org> wrote: Unfortunately, that is all I have. No, I have nothing except what was in the obituary. I so far haven't found any records in Vinton Co, but its possible there may be something in the articles about the park dedication.
