    3. You should be able to find lots about James White on the internet, look at the history of Tennessee. His log cabin and the larger Block House is on display in downtown Knoxville. He also gave the ground and help start Blount College, which is now the University of Tennessee. 1. [WHITE] Whites on Ancestry.com
    2. Again for any who don't subscribe to the Ancestry.com newsletter, a very interesting place to search for Whites. Of course, there is the usual white house, white creek, white child, etc. to contend with but there are many White surnames and middle names. Here's a quote from the news letter: AMERICAN SOUTH, NOTABLE FAMILIES Settled by varied groups of people from disparate nations, the American South is home to a number of prominent families. Combining narrative history with genealogy, this database is a listing of many families who helped settle the South. Many entries often include the location of the family’s home in England, land grants, lines of descent, and often occupation. In addition to these helpful records, the database includes biographical sketches for more than 20,000 men and women. For those Ancestry.com patrons seeking ancestors from notable families in Virginia, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Alabama, this can be a valuable source of information. Source Information: "Notable Southern Families, Volumes I-II." Richmond, VA: n.p., 1918. To search this database, go to: http://www.ancestry.com/search/rectype/inddbs/4634.htm ___________________________________________________

    3. Did they buy land when they first arrived? Sometimes the first deed will say something like "John White of Blank Co., VA" or whatever. Also you might check the censuses, including the 1850 census. if you see the same first names showing up for a particular county, that can be a lead since families often used the same first names over and over. Also, were they married when they arrived? If so do you know the wife's maiden name? Middle names (and sometimes first names) of sons were often the maiden name of wife. If the wife had an unusual maiden name you can then look for it in the 1850 census and that can sometimes be a lead; then you can check marriage records, which are usually indexed by surname of both husband and wife. Good luck! (Bedford County has an active history museum/archives; Botetourt has a genealogist who works 2 days a week & it is also on the James.) 3. Helen, I'm not sure if any of them went to Tx or not. At least one Johnson line (child) was from Mo. & ended up in Okla. The McKay line I think was also from Mo., & probably from Indiana & also ended up in Okla. But I haven't got any farther on these lines than I have on the White's LOL Alli ----- Original Message ----- From: <HRsom1@aol.com> To: <WHITE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, May 21, 2000 10:54 PM Subject: [WHITE] Re:Researching MCKAY-JOHNSON > In a message dated 5/21/00 8:15:14 AM Pacific Daylight Time, > aka2@magiclink.com writes: > > << > Alli > Researching: > ABRAM--JOHNSON--ADAMS--LOVELL--WHITE--PHARISS--McCALL--McKAY--THOMPSON > Adams-L Listowner >> > > Alli, > > Are your MCKAY & JOHNSON in Texas by any chance? 3. Jean, I found you message regarding John, William and Samuel White of Loudoun County, Virginia interesting. Did Samuel possibly have a brother, Willis White? My Willis named sons John, Willis and Samuel, he also had daughters Lucinda and Leann. It looks and interesting possibility. Willis was born in Kentucky about 1791. I believe it would have been still a part of Virginia until 1793. Marleen Van Horne
