Mine moved from Virginia to Delaware County, Ohio, around 1814. I just wanted to remind you not to restrict your search to present-day Virginia. My "Virginians" came from what is now Ohio County, West Virginia. You are lucky to have the Bradley connection - there were a multitude of John Whites! Best wishes, Margaret

    2. Pat Mims
    3. Thanks to hard-working volunteers Pam, Cindy G and Cindy L, I have recently put the following Passport records online on NaturalizationRecords.com (http://NaturalizationRecords.com/usa/ ) Passport applications are often a valuable source of genealogical information. NARA has passport applications from October 1795-March 1925. The U. S. Department of State has passport applications from April 1925 to the present. Some immigrants applied for passports to return home to visit family or friends. These records usually give a place of birth or at least the destination (which is often the home town) The first passport issued in USA was dated July 1796. My first new database is an Index to Special Passports 1829- 1887. This is for all states. http://naturalizationrecords.com/usa/passports1829-87a.shtml Next is an Index to the Register of Passport Applications 1809- 1817 for all states, found at http://naturalizationrecords.com/usa/passports1809.shtml At present 1809 and 1810 are online, the remaining years will follow as quickly as Cindy G and I get them transcribed. I have also added new surnames beginning with G, H and L to the existing Register of Passports 1834-1843 at http://naturalizationrecords.com/usa/passports1834_a.shtml These are for all states. G Surnames are at http://naturalizationrecords.com/usa/passports1834_g.shtml H Surnames are at http://naturalizationrecords.com/usa/passports1834_h.shtml L Surnames are at http://naturalizationrecords.com/usa/passports1834_l.shtml Surnames A to F were already online, and the rest will follow as quickly as they are transcribed. All records on NaturalizationRecords.com are FREE to use, please let each page load completely then scroll down to find the names. The index to Passport Records and an explanation of Passport Records as a research tool is at http://naturalizationrecords.com/usa/passports.shtml You can pass this message on to anyone you think might be interested, and if you find an ancestor on any of my projects please let me know! 3. >From the The Ohio Biographies Project http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~usbios/Ohio/mnpg.html a part of The U.S. Biographies Project http://members.tripod.com/~debmurray/usbios/usbiog.html Transcribed by Deb. "Historical Collections of Ohio, Vol 2" by Henry Howe. (pub 1888) Licking County Page 88-89 Samuel White was born in Granville, March 4, 1813. The history of his brief but brilliant career is well given in an address delivered by the Hon. Isaac Smucker, on the occasion of the Pioneer meeting at Newark, July 4, 1885. "He early developed talents of a high order and was ambitious to acquire an education. He went to school on the Hills when opportunity offered, often barefooted, even in mid-winter, sometimes when snow covered the ground, although the school-house was a mile or more away. His method was to heat a small board quite hot, wrap it up, then start at his best speed toward the school-house and run until his feet became very cold, when he would lay his hot board down and stand on it until his feet became comfortable; then he would start again. There was a half-way house at which he stopped to warm up his board before arriving at the school-house. It would be safe to predict that such a boy would not go through life without an education." In 1831 he was the first student to enter Granville (now Dennison) University, but left this institution to complete his education at Oberlin, on account of his view on the slavery question. In 1838 he began the practice of law. He became one of the editors of the Newark Gazette. Was elected to the Legislature in 1843; was a Whig candidate for Congress in 1844, but died at Delware, Ohio, July 28, 1844, and Columbus Delano, who took his place on the Whig ticket, was elected. Mr. Smucker says: "Sam White was a man of remarkable force and power as a public speaker; he was fearless, independent, outspoken, frank, honest, never giving utterance to opinions he did not believe, and always ready to give expression to thoughts that he entertained without fear, favor, or affection." In the famous crusades of his time against slavery intemperance, and the abridgement of freedom of speech he was always in the front ranks playing the part of Richard, the Lion-hearted, and playing it best when and where the fight was hottest." On one occasion in the western portion of Hartford township, "he, an overpowered, helpless victim, fell into the hands of a satanic, inhuman mob, who rode him on a rail, and inflicted upon him other indignities accompanied by circumstances of humiliating degradation; many of the mobocrats even favoring the proposition to blacken him with lampblack and oil, and threatened to inflict still other and more offensive indignities upon him, which, if those fiendish mobocrats had not relented and moderated their ferocious temper, would have ended in murder." -- "Lord, keep your arm around my shoulders....and your hand over my mouth."

Andrew White who was Pay Master of Colonel Frederick Weissenfels' Levy in the American Revolution? Thanks, Margaret

    3. Rice, Now you've got me wondering about the ancestry of yet another Ambrose White, who first appears in the 1799 Caroline Co., VA, personal tax list but had no taxed land. This Ambrose White was listed as taxed on May 26 along with James White and William White, Jr., both of which I suspect are the sons of Ambrose White. This Ambrose was not listed in the 1789 Caroline Co. tax list. He is said to have married Ann Jones in Jan. 1776 and to have died 2 Jun 1823 in Caroline Co. His children were named in a chancery court suit: James Jones White, Horace White, Ira White, Elizabeth J. White, Patsy White, Rachael White, and William S. White (d. BEF 12 Jul 1823 Caroline Co.). Records in Caroline Co. are spotty as it is a "burned county". Some White researchers suspect this Ambrose was related to the Whites of Halifax Co. One tells me Ambrose possibly had brothers Moses and James, and they may have been the sons of a James White, and their line may have connected to Chillion White of 17th century Virginia. There was another landless Chillion White in the 1799 Caroline Co. tax list.
