I am searching for a picture of JOHN W. WHITE and wife SUSANNAH BRADLEY WHITE. This could be individual pictures or a family picture. If anyone has one, please e-mail me. JOHN W. Folks I have a photograph of a couple taken by H.A. Crosley studios in Forest Grove, Oregon. Written on it in pencil is "Mr. & Mrs Johnson". Also in ink is written "Lottie White". I surmise that Lottie White became Mrs. Johnson and that the photo was taken 1880-1900. I'd like to give the photo to a descendant. Thanks Richard G. Hello Mignon, The farthest White ancestor I know for sure was my 6th or 7th great grandfather, Col. Henry White of Spartanburg, S.C.. Now my great grandfather, Rev. Wm. Henry White, said that two brothers had come from England in the early 1800s and one settled in Va and the other in S.C., he being Col. Henry White. But subswqent research shows that my Henry White was first in Orange Co., Va., then moved to South Carolina in or around 1755 or a bit later. he married there in Va and some of his kids were born there. Other than this I know nothing about their origins. I wish I did though. Take care, Dave ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mignon Nicholson" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, July 08, 2003 8:47 AM Subject: [WHITE] Re: WHITE-D Digest V03 #63 > Kent (and others) > > I'm a descendant of the Whites of Halifax Co., but I don't know where they came > from (for sure) before late 1700's. I have a Calvin White b. abt April 1803 probably in Massachusettes or New York. Seeking any clarification/insight into his wive(s) and/or child(ren) According to family lore he wrote campaign songs in the war of 1812 and received a pension which he used ot obtain land in Michigan. He supposedly fathered two children Lorenzo H and Mariah Antoinette who married into the Alverson family (Mary Smith Alverson and Lewis Alverson respectively). Records are confusing on a middle name - some show Otis and others Grover. Naming patters of chldren include Calvin and Otis but I haven't found "Grover" in other generations. Also, If Calvin is Lorenzo H White's father - he would have been very young indeed (abt 15 according to census records) when this occurred. I have not been able to definately pin down a birth/death date or location for Calvin. Any insight? Macomb Michigan marriage records have Calvin White and Julianna(Turrell) Boughton Marriage: 29 JAN 1842, Macomb, Michigan Husband Age at Marriage: 38 Wife Age at Marriage: 26 I believe this is the second or third marriage for Calvin White. I also believe that Lorenzo and Mariah had different mothers based on letters written by Mary Smith (Alverson) White and the age difference between the two children. Mariah's mother may have been Abigail Adams (1804-1841) 1850 Census Bruce, Macomb, Michigan has the following: White, Calvin G, 47, m, farmer, 1200, NY, White, Juliana, 34, f, NY, White, Charlotte, 21, f, NY, White, Oscar, 17, m, farmer, Mich, White, Mariah A, 14, f, Mich, White, Emma, 7, f, Mich White, Julia A, 4, f, Mich, White, Frank M, 2, m, Mich, Boughton, Charles L, 9, m, Mich, 1850 Michigan Census has Lorenzo H White and wife Mary as well as her brother Lewis Alverson living in the same household 1880 Census Washington, Macomb, Michigan has Calvin WHITE, Self, M, Male, W, 76, NY, Farmer MA, CT Julina WHITE, Wife, M, Female, W, 64, NY Keeping House CT, PA Fred C. Kay Martin, My James White died before the Ohio 1820 Census. His wife, Polly, died at 73 in 1822, Washington Co. Ohio. They had two sons, known: James Jr., and William. The 1880 Index (FHL) says parents were both born in PA( from William . I assume James was born about 1750's. I've found ten James, three Jas and one Jame in PA 1790 Census One James and Esther lived in Independence, Beaver, PA, but his parents were born in Ireland.? William was born in 1797 somewhere in PA. (His brother is not h o h in 1820 ) Polly may not be the mother of William and James Jr. as she was probably late forties when William was born. I'd like to discuss strategies with you. 1850 Census Charles White, age 72, no occupation, born in Maryland Maria White, age 46, born Delaware John White, age 11, born Delaware Margaret White, age 8, born Delaware James T. White, age 5, born Delaware I believe that Charles is buried at Bryn Zion Church in Kent County, Delaware. Not sure if Maria is there with him or not. I don't believe that she is. It is possible that she remarried after Charles' death. Charles was born in 1777. He died 4/26/1859. After Charles' death, Maria appears to have moved to New Castle County, Delaware (Wilmington area) where she is running a boarding house on Tatnall Street. She's listed there in the 1860 census as a widow with John and Rebecca Hurley (early 30s) and a William T. Thompson, age 7. Maria's maiden name may have been Matterford. I found a microfilm record that listed a Charles White and Maria Matterford married on or about 6/30/1838. If any of this is familiar to anyone, please let me know. Any additional information would be greatly appreciated. I'm at a brick wall. Thanks! Melissa Cecil County, Maryland
In reading through the White Family Recorder I see that Owen Payne White is supposedly related to this same branch of Whites as the excerpt below indicates: >From Vol. III, No. 2 of the White Family Recorder "THE recovery of the names of past ancestors and locating of descendants, requires time, patience and money; writing many letters and traveling many miles. As told in the last "Recorder", Rev. Alward White left a son, Alward M., who became a doctor. Hoping to find trace of him, I examined old medical directories. I found a Dr. Alward White in Shafter, Texas. Writing there, I was told that Dr. White had died in 1931 and referred to his brother, Owen P. White of Long Island. Mr. White answered that he was a grand-son of Dr. Alward M. White but had never kept up on the Family Tree, so referred me to his first cousin Emmet White of Gary, Ind." I am not a genealogist or even a "White", but I have recently transcribed all 400+ pages of the White Family Recorder (written 1919-1934). The primary focus of the WFR is the Henry William White (1767 NJ) and the Margaret Reynolds line. However, the editor of the WFR also writes about the siblings of Henry W. White, including his brother, Alward. According to the WFR, "Alward" was the maiden name of Henry White's mother. I don't know if there is a connection, but "Alward" does not strike me as being a common given name. Henry's brother Alward was a Reverend and had a son named "Alward." Can someone identify this White? Thanks, Jean (Taken from Tx Handbook Online) WHITE, MATTHEW G. (1775-ca. 1830). Matthew G. White, early Texas settler, surveyor, and alcaldeqv of the Atascosito District, son of John and Mary White, was born in Charlotte County, Virginia, in 1775. He and his wife, Lucy (Price) White, moved to Mississippi, where they established a plantation near Liberty, the county seat of Amite County. White and his son-in-law, Hugh B. Johnston,qv were among the leaders of a contingent of immigrants to Texas in 1825. White claimed a league of Atascosito District land on the east bank of the Trinity River in what is now part of the city of Liberty. The 1826 census listed him as a farmer and stockraiser. As was the case for many other area residents, however, the Mexican government did not immediately recognize his claim. This led White to join a number of local settlers in petitioning Mexican president Anastasio Bustamanteqv for action in the matter in 1827. Despite his grievances, White was alcalde of the Atascosito District in 1829-30. White drowned in Self's Bayou in late 1830 or early 1831. He had twelve children; James B. Woodsqv and Hugh B. Johnston married two of his daughters. Mexico finally recognized White's land claim in 1831, and the area was subsequently found to have large quantities of oil. In 1976 the Liberty Bicentennial celebration commemorated White's prerevolutionary grant with a marker. Joseph White, one of Stephen F. Austin's qv Old Three Hundredqv colonists, was born in Georgia. He received title to a sitio of land in the area of present Brazoria County on August 16, 1824. The census of 1826 classified him as a farmer and stock raiser, aged between twenty-five and forty. His household included his wife, two sons, a daughter, and five slaves. White was elected alcalde at San Felipe on December 21, 1828. In December 1829 he bought several lots in San Felipe de Austin and took over a debt owed by Horatio Chriesmanqv to the ayuntamiento. qv White died in San Felipe de Austin on June 14, 1830. In October 1830 alcalde Thomas Barnettqv published notice that Zeno Philips,qv administrator of White's estate, would have a public sale at White's last residence, of half a league of land on Clear Creek, west of Galveston Bay; two lots; a negro woman slave; household and kitchen furniture; and personal property. Sources indicate that a Joseph White served with the artillery corps at San Jacinto. Does anyone have the line on this Joseph White?? Thanks, Jean
Could me eliminate Isaac Whites by listing those that we have information on? Isaac White, married to Polly Ann, died in Dumas, Tippah Co, Ms on Dec 29,1875. Children: I.N. White; Dolly White and Dora White. (Because my line of Loudoun Co, Va Whites settled and died in Tippah Co, I figured he was connected somewhere.) Isaac White b Mar 26, 1826 in Hawkins Co, Tn to Wm M White and Mary Agnes Adams who mar abt 1818 in Greene Co, Tn...Isaac mar Mary Beal and had Martha, Wm, Geo Henry and Sarah E. He would not be old enough to die in the Alamo in1836. Isaac White b abt 1846 in Ga, could not have been in Alamo. He was a son of Hiram White and Elvira Sarah Sallie Mullins who mar Mar 23, 1842 in Monroe Co, Tn. Other chil: Sarah, Cassey, Lawsy, Catherine, Morgan, Eadon, William, and Jonathan and Barlemallen. Hiriam was a son of Wm H White and Marg Jane Keys connecting on to the Loudoun Co Whites. Isaac B White b Feb 10, 1819 Greene/Jefferson Co, Tn mar Catherine Williams on Dec 23, 1841. Could not have been in Alamo in 1836. Isaac M White was a son of Matthew L White b bet 1800-1810 in Va, mar Rhoda Stagdon prob in Montgomery Co, Mo. Had chil: Nancy, William, Thomas S, James H, Isaac M, John R, Mary J, and Samuel M White, plus Margaret A, Martha L, and Rebecca b aft 1829. This does not seem likely candidate for the Isaac in Alama 1836. An Isaac White mar Jane Shannon on Mar 12, 1818. No other details known on him. Could have been in Alamo 1836. Another Isaac White who mar Sarah, had Terry, Wm, Stephan, Richard, and Mary, Susannah, and Anna. He is listed as dying about 1819. Not a candidate for Alamo Isaac White. Can anyone add any Isaac informations? Thanks, Jean
Interesting article on Tx White....but the Payne family connects to the White line away back in Loudoun Co, Va early 1700's. Jean WHITE, OWEN PAYNE (1879-1946). Owen Payne White, writer and editor, second son of Alward and Katherine J. (Payne) White, was born at El Paso on June 9, 1879. White graduated from El Paso High School on May 27, 1896, briefly attended the University of Texas at Austin in 1898, and returned to El Paso within a few months. He studied law at New York University but never graduated. During World War Iqv White achieved the rank of sergeant serving in a medical unit. On January 22, 1920, White married Hazel Harvey and the same year went to work as a columnist for the El Paso Herald. The publication of his first book, Out of the Desert, in 1923 brought him to the attention of H. L. Mencken, editor of the American Mercury. The book, a local history of El Paso, was also favorably reviewed in the New York Times. Shortly before the inauguration of Miriam A. "Ma" Fergusonqv as governor of Texas, the New York Times asked White to cover the event. As a result the Times offered him a job, and in 1925 he moved to New York, establishing a home at Cutchogue, Long Island, where he lived until his death. After working as a freelance writer for several magazines and producing two more books about the "wild" West, Them Was the Days (1925) and Trigger Fingers (1926), White was hired by Collier's in 1926 as an associate editor and staff writer, positions he held until 1940. For thirteen years he attracted national attention as a muckraker and outspoken critic of corrupt politicians, especially those from Texas. The oil industry and graft in the lower Rio Grande valley were of particular interest to White. Lawsuits were threatened and brought against White and Collier's by parties ranging from Texas lieutenant governor-elect Walter Woodul in 1935 to Rentfro B. Creager,qv Republican national committeeman for Texas. While most of the suits were unsuccessful, Autobiography of a Durable Sinner (1942) was recalled before formal release, and the chapter on R. B. Creager was removed. White published eight books of nonfiction, including Frontier Mother (1929), Lead and Likker (1932), My Texas "Tis of Thee" (1936), and Texas: An Informal Biography (1945), and two collections of verse, Southwestern Ballads (1921) and Just Me and Other Poems (1924). At the time of his death on December 7, 1946, in New York, White was working on another book about the Southwest titled Western Trails. It is an account of the major routes of travel west of the Mississippi from the sixteenth century until 1836. Virtually completed, that manuscript, along with thirty-three letters of correspondence between White and H. L. Mencken and numerous other letters and articles, are located in the archives of the University of Texas at El Paso library.
