    2. Good question, Tia. One of the first questions I would ask of my relatives is if they've IDENTIFIED their PHOTOGRAPHS by writing the names, relationships, dates, locations (and sometimes stories) of each photo in their possession. (Using acid free inkpens or pencils, of course.) What good is a photo if you don't know who it portrays? Upon my request, one of the last projects my mother accomplished before leaving this earth was to write the names of the people on the back of each of her treasured photos. How we appreciated her efforts! And what a good lesson for the rest of the family: Now all photos are ID'd as soon as we get them back from the photo shop. My mother-in-law didn't get around to it, and now all we have is a huge box of pictures of strangers. Everyone who could've identifed the photo is long gone. Now isn't that too bad? 3. Yes that happened with our grandparents. We made sure all pictures belonging to our parents were id'd and I like you never get/give a pic without id'ing info on the back. If they don't put it there I do to the best of my knowledge. We had to go one step further though in my husband's family. One brother was to get ~all~ the pic (even the ones we gave them) upon the death of my husband's parents. We wrote on the backs (actually an older sil started it "to be returned to susch and such upon death. Terrible to have to do something like that but they should have been returned to the families they came from. 3. Hello, As for me, since I know my White line back to pre-Rev War Va/SC, I would like to simply know what happened to the uniforms and equipment of my g.g.grandfather John Warren White and his four brothers that fought in The War for Southern Independence, or at least if anyone has a pic of any of them in their uniform. Unfortunately our family has not had contact with the descendents of his other four brothers since the mid 1800s. I do have a pic of a South Carolina Soldier in his South Carolina uniform. It was found in a box along with other old family pics in a box under my grandmother's bed after she died. I believe it to be my g.g.grandfather or one of those White brothers, or at least a close relative. The uniform matches discriptions I have read about describiing the uniform of the Palmetto Sharpshooters, S.C. Vols.. That is the unit that my g.g.grandfather and his brothers were in. Take care, Dave ----- Original Message ----- From: "glitz" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, July 24, 2003 10:00 AM Subject: [WHITE] genealogy based question > I am doing a survey here. 1. [WHITE] Fw: Turner family
    2. Dear Ms. Hawks: I visited your Turner website and I must commend you for your hard work to preserve the history of a Turner family. Can you identify the parents of William Toliver Turner? He was born in Virginia and was "26 years old" according to 1850 census (meaning: he was born 1823/24 and died young and intestate in about 1865 in Waterloo, Fauquier Co. Background information on William Toliver Turner: 1. William lived "next door" to the house of Mrs. Eliza Letitia Steptoe [Clarkson] Marshall, paternal granddaughter of Dorcas Turner (source: 1850 and 1860 census). 2. William's daughter, Martha Jane Turner, was born at Mrs. Eliza Marshall's home on May 10, 1860 (source: birth certificate from Fauquier County's courthouse). 3. Mrs. Eliza Marshall's grandson, Jacquelin Ambler Marshall, was married to his distant cousin, Eliza Randolph Turner, daughter of Edward Carter Turner of the Plains, Fauquier Co. VA. (source: Marshall genealogy website). 4. William and Martha Jane White also of Fauquier Co. went to Warren Co. VA to get married on March 16, 1846. The person signing the marriage license was Robert Turner (source: marriage certificate from Warren Co.VA.). Martha Jane White was daughter of John Y. White of Fauquier Co. and Lucy Feagans of both Warren Co. and Fauquier Co. 5. "Known" children of William (source: 1850 & 1860 census): i. John W. Turner, bc. 1847. ii. Mary Elizabeth Turner, bc 1849. iii. Lucy D. Turner, bc 1851. iv. Charles A. or N. Turner, bc 1853. v. Benjamin F. Turner, bc 1855. vi. Ann Elizabeth Turner, bc 1858. vii. Martha Jane Turner, May 10, 1860 --born at Marshall's home. viii. Willie Harriet Toliver Turner, bc 1864. My cousin said that William also had a son Andrew Turner born 1849 and died one or nine of age, but the 1850 census does not show Andrew. Most of William's children moved to Washington, DC., Bethesda, and Chevy Chase, Maryland, in the late 1890's. Where does William Toliver Turner fit in the Turner family? Can we logically guess?
