Emma Siggins White in 1920, after the death of her husband [ John Barber White], and in his honor, wrote a book called Genesis of the White Family. One place it is for sure is at New England Historical Society in Boston, MA. It covers the history of the White family back through the ages. Ask your reference librarian at your local library to try to locate this book through inter-library loan for you. Check for Bancroft's History of the U.S. for information on John White's group Hakluyt recorded the names of those pioneers who sailed with John White and Richard Grenville from Plymouth in April, 1585. 107 men left on the Island of Roanoke. A copy of the White crest appears in the Harlean Society Publication of 1915, "Grant of Arms". This is a long continuing story and lots of research has been done. Surf the net. Ginny [White] Keefer.
If someone will buy it (White Family History on ebay), I'll send them $10 to be able to use the book for a couple weeks, and I'll share whatever comes of it. I'm looking for the ancestry of Virginia Dare b1587, America's first citizen, and her ancestry, including mother Eleanor (White) Dare, and grandfather John White, selected by Sir Walter Raleigh to be the leader of what became the Lost Colony in Jamestown VA. I'm also a Dare descendant. (I also am seeking Chuck Gleason who researched the history of the Whites vback into the middle ages). & Thanks for finding & posting it Grannie. Interesting discussion, regarding the eBay notice of "SaltLakeGenealogist," though it is somewhat off- topic, I would guess. Anyway, I'm hoping that some of you can help me. I have no Whites in my ancestry, but I recently published a Digital (machine searchable) Edition of Kellogg's "Memorials of John White, One of the First Settlers of Hartford, Connecticut, and of His Descendants," originally published in Hartford, 1860. A neighbor lent the original to me for this purpose, because she wanted copies for her children and grandchildren. Being happy to oblige, I scanned the text and OCRd it to produce a reasonably priced CD edition in Rich Text Format. I would imagine that this might be of interest to some White family researchers, and even more so because I have have provided a free on-line copy of the book's index and have offered a free look-up service for contents of this volume and other classic genealogies that I have published on CD. I am prepared to "lurk" on the White surname list for the purpose of helping people when I find that information they are seeking in the "Memorials of John White," but I am obviously a "comercial" operation (though I operate much below cost) and so I will tell them only that the information they seek exists in such-and-such a source. If my presence here under these conditions offends anyone, please tell me, and I will graciously bow out. I'm sorry to have to send this to the list, but I want this person to know that I didn't attack them in any way and that was not my intent. All I did was warn people to be careful of what was being sold. I didn't add, but will now, that I bought a few of these books (I don't know if it is from this seller) a few years ago. FYI -- I went to the eBay site for the WHITE book. Then I clicked on the seller's other items for sale. Amazing... This person has a racket going and did not hesitate to ADVERTISE on the WHITE list. I am Rhea Hodges Goss daughter of Virgil Hodges, twin son of Mary Ellen Kilgore Hodges, daughter of Shrildia/ Sarilda [White] Kilgore. Shrildia/ Sarilda married George Kilgore in 1872 in Arkansas and on the 1880 census they were still there with 3 little children the baby then we believe to be my grandmother [ Mary Ellen] . We are having no luck at finding her after that.Nor the 2 older girls. However we do know there are at least 2 other children, a 2nd wife and a group of step childen. Sure hoping some one will reconize this family. On the 1880 census it shows Sarilda and her parents are from Kentucky. Joe Goss
I am not complaining and I hope the list manager will not be offended by my email to my White cousins.......but, this is not the place for free advertising for any book. I am afraid there are many books like the one you are referring to on ebay now. Many of the authors of these "books" are people who have taken advantage of the "sharing" we do with each other of our own genealogy research. .....Many have compiled it (in no specific order).....just names etc......and are now selling them at the expense of all of us. There are those who look for a way to make $$money$$.....as my White ancestors might say "by hook or by crook!" I guess the last sentence to your email said it all....."Do not bid on this item if you are expecting a full ¿family history.¿" Marsha a Charlotte Co., VA .....White! ----- Original Message ----- From: "A-T-K's Grannie" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, January 17, 2004 5:18 PM Subject: [WHITE] White Family History on ebay > Book ¿ White Family History > > http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2979105862 > This book is made up of White family information that has been extracted > from a number of sources. I don't know if this will help or not, but, it is worth a try. J. White's interest in genealogy is reflected in his handwritten White family genealogy (1906?) which has been transcribed by Vermont Historical Society staff. ... www.vermonthistory.org/arccat/findaid/white.htm Other links http://www.wheelockgenealogy.com/ged/ralphdsc/index/ind0345.html http://www.cityget.com/vermont_genealogy.html http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~vermontgenealogyresources/Townships/Washington/EastMontpeliertown.html --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free.
