    1. [WHITE] Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish Settlement of Virginia
    2. A-T-K's Grannie
    3. Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish Settlement of Virginia Vol 2, pp 132 - 139 by Lyman Chalkley White vs. Moore--O. S. 168; N. S. 59--Bill, June, 1808. Complainants are, viz: John, Nathaniel, James, William WHITE, Margaret (WHITE), wife of James McFarland, Rebecca (WHITE), wife of William McFarland, Mary (WHITE), wife of Robert Snodgrass, David Greenlee and his children (infants), heir of their mother Jane, who was Jane WHITE, all being heirs and legal representatives of John WHITE, who was only heir-at-law and legal representative of Thomas Boyd, who was son of Andrew Boyd, who died many years ago, leaving a tract in Augusta County, 240 acres. Andrew died testate in Augusta, devising to his wife and sons, Thomas and John. Andrew's widow died intestate and her part descended to Thomas, the eldest son. After Andrew's death, a patent issued in Andrew's name for an entry of his for 115 acres, but some one struck out Andrew and inserted John. John died testate, without issue, devising his lands to his wife, Elizabeth, for her life, with reversion to her son, John Varnum. Then Thomas Boyd died intestate, leaving complainants his heirs. But Elizabeth Boyd and William Moore, who bought claim of Varnum, set up an adverse claim. Answer says Andrew Boyd died 1750. A patent for the 115 acres issued in 1759 in name of John, when he was not more than 12 or 15 years old. Andrew Boyd's will dated 26th February, 1749, proved in Augusta 22d May, 1750, to cousin, John WHITE, if he came here to live. Wife, Rebecca. White); John W. Armstrong, who married Eliza McMillan); Ethelred W. Armstrong (known as Shed, who married Mattie Carter); James M. Armstrong (who married Pricey Monday); Eliza Armstrong (who married Richard Campbell); Wallace Armstrong (who married Emma Effort); Margaret Armstrong (who married Alfred Ault); Betsy Armstrong (who married Andrew McMillan); Amelia Armstrong (who married her cousin James Newton Armstrong as his first wife); and Martha Armstrong (who married William Kennedy). Robert Armstrong the Third, as the family Bible says of his father and grandfather was of "patriotic spirit." When he was eighteen years of age, in 1792 he served a term of three months under Captain Hugh Beard and was stationed near Nashville. He was one of the "gallant thirty-eight" who in September 1793 defended Knoxville against fifteen hundred Indians, being then a lad of not quite nineteen. He was also one of the detachment of eight or ten who by order of Colonel White and under Captain Gillespie, after lying in the pass to defend Knoxville, went over to Buncombe County, North Carolina, scouting for Indians, after the burning of Carter's Station. He alsc served in the United States Regular Army in a Cavalry Company under Captain Nathanial Evans in the winter of 1793. And not content with service while he was still a young man. Robert Armstrong was a member of Captain Davis Company of local militia in 1828 when he reached the age of forty-nine. --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. My Capt Absalom White, CSA, of Tippah Co Ms was severely wounded in the war, and died shortly after he arrived home at war's end. My GF, Thomas Jefferson White, born 1859, said that as soon as he was old enough, he took his mother to Memphis where he peddled milk until he saved enough to get her to Texas. I have always wondered if more Whites were in Memphis when he went there from Blue Mt, Ms...in other words relatives that would help a young boy. ??? Thanks, Jean

    3. Rev. Mr. White....I hope this is of some value to someone on list. MEMPHIS DAILY APPEAL [MEMPHIS, TN], December 25, 1860, p. 3, c. 3 Church Decorations.--We were kindly admitted yesterday, by the Rev. Mr. White, to a sight of the Christmas decorations of Cavalry church, and were not a little struck with its appropriateness and beauty. Along the side wall evergreens are disposed in double lines of festoons, the intersections of which form a space bounded with graceful curves; within the alternate spaces appears a neat cross. From the four corners wreaths hang in festoons like the drooping of a canopy of foliage. The altar and its furniture appear to great advantage. High above the chancel window is a circle of evergreens, inclosing the motto: "When they saw the star they rejoiced." Beneath this is a large star, among the foliage of which are skillfully placed jets, and when the gas is lighted at night, the effect will be extremely beautiful. Below the star is a large cross, covered with evergreens and ornamented with white roses. We acknowledge that we like to see this cross, which heathen despised and spat upon, displayed with honor in the house of God; it looks as if the worshipers were not "ashamed of Jesus." On the sides of the altar the stones containing the epitaphs of the Rev. Mr. Wright, the first, and of the Rev. Mr. Slater, the second rector of the church, are neatly decorated, as is also the whole of the noble chancel window. On the two walls flanking the window appear the two mottoes: "Blessed be the Lord God of Israel," and "For he hath visited and redeemed his people." The font, of white marble, is twisted round with a thick wreathe of ivy, plentifully intermixed with white roses, the latter an emblem of purity, well suited to the baptistry. The reading desk and rostrum are similarly decorated. Over the organ appears the motto: "Hark, the heavenly angels sing," and in front of the gallery: "Glory to God in the highest." The whole is in good taste and very pleasing; it was the work of Mr. J. P. Lallemand, to whose skill it dos very great credit. The decorations of the Roman Catholic church are less ornate, in harmony with the style of the interior. The pillars have wreaths twisted from top to bottom. The front of the gallery is very pleasingly ornamented, and in the center appears a large drawing of an angel; with the motto: "Gloria in Excelsis. The altar will excite the most attention, but as it was necessarily late before the decorations were commenced here, we are not able to give the full description we would wish. The altar itself has evergreens and roses, with candles at intervals, very tastefully arranged. On one side is an angel with one hand pointing to a brilliant star above and beyond; on the other, a second, with a trumpet, bearing the motto: "Tidings of great joy." We understood a third would most likely be added, with the motto: "Hallelujah," and probably, also, figures of the three kings of the East. To the labors of Mrs. Gilmore and the ladies of the Society of the Altar is due the handsome decorations of the church. http://www.uttyl.edu/vbetts/memphis_appeal_memphis.htm

    1. [WHITE] Looking For My Whites
    2. Sharon Cobb
    3. Hey all It has been awhile since I posted but it appears to be some new activity on the board so I'm trying again! I am looking for information on my family but do not have ALOT to go on. Any help is appreciated! GJ White was said to have come over on a boat from Ireland with two brothers. Rumor has it that one brother went off without the other two once they arrived in the states and that brother would be GJ. Rumor has it that he took a Native American Indian wife and had several children including a Hugh White and George Washington White. He supposedly went to take a family helper home one day and never returned. The story goes that years later one of the sons was in a lumber store and signed his name and the clerk there asked him if he had written his name wrong as the name was identical to another man but the middle initial was different. As they talked it shocked him to learn that this man with the same name also had brothers with the same names as his siblings. He contacted the man to learn that they did indeed have the same father. GJ White had ran off with the "family helper" and started a new family all together, giving them very similar names as his first family. GJ supposedly had served in a war and had his heal blown off. And the new family supposedly produced the Hugh White that was once the govenor of Mississippi. Now all of this is rumor and has not been confirmed. What I do know for sure is that the son of GJ White, George Washington White had children named Hugh Franklin, Melvin, George Newton and a Nina (or something along those lines). The three brothers all married Park(s) sisters. Hugh Franklin married Lula Mae Park. In later years George Washington remarried Lou (Lucy) Jane Park. Lou Jane was Lula Mae's mother. I'm not sure who his frist wife was that produced Hugh, Melvin, George and Nina. I'm not real sure where all of this took place either other than to say possibly Alabama, Mississippi and Texas. I do know that George Washington died in either Monroe county or Lowndes county Mississippi. Hugh Franklin and Lula Mae lived the majority of their later years in Monroe County Mississippi in the Hamilton area. Lou Jane died in New Braunsville Texas ( I hope I spelled that correctly ). She was buried in Monroe County Mississippi however. I hope I haven't confused you and thanks so much for being patient and reading this long email. Thanks for any and all help! 2. Marti Roe
    3. My ancestor is the above "Capt" Samuel Williams who fought in Rev. War and wife Jane. It's hard to believe but I have found FOUR different maiden names for "Jane" - White, Moore, Pope, and Brasswell. Some of this is on the "net" and some from various related family records. The extracted Edgecombe County will's that I have found only use "Jane" - however, a distant Williams relative stated that the will states:"His legatees were: wife, Jane White Williams, executrix; sons: Samuel and William......... Known children are: Samuel, William, Jacob, George, Lucretia (Creese) and Sampson. Can someone verify that Samuel's will really does state "Jane White Williams?" Since I've also seen Jane listed as a Moore (dau of George) and I've also seen Jane was a Pope and also married a Richard Brasswell. Was "Jane" married more than once? Need help in clearing up this part of the line. Also would like to exchange info. on the children. Thanks Marti [email protected] researching: Martineau, Higgins (all southern states: Williams, Pope, Crudup, Thomas, Berry, Kyle, Isbell, Davis )

    1. Re: [WHITE] Birth of Peregrine White aboard the Mayflower & Resolved
    2. I read about Resolved, from whom our line descends, and found a piece several years ago at the NEHGS site that Susannah and William White named him Resolved because they had just resolved to join the Puritans going to the new world when he was born, hence the name to commemorate their decision. Sorry, can't give you book and verse. 3. I just read what Jack Pennybacker wrote about his White/Fitzhugh connection. I'm the Keeper of the VA Fitzhugh Database so have some bits of info. I'm wondering where Ellie Fitzhugh Donaghe's middle name came from. Her parents, as I have them, were William W. and Lucy Jane (Callahan) Donaghe, Jr. Charleen in Oregon *********************************** Charleen [email protected] Researching Fitzhugh, Oerding, Mace, Tuura, and Asvik "Keeper of the VA Fitzhugh Database" List mom: [email protected]

    3. Hi Jim, I appreciate your sending me the 3 or 4 Plymouth Rock White files/ text/ Arms, Trees, etc. msgs. Unfortunately, your Adobe 6 would not operate / cooperate properly here, so I could not save, print, or select/ copy any text. Thus, I can do little but observe the info/ text/ images you sent, which were interesting and looked very nice. You do seem to have an excellent handle on your White family. Is your Plymouth White Gen posted to the White-L List Archives? http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/surname/w/white.html If so, I can obtain it there. Did you see the 1500s England White info I posted an hour or so ago? A response to Ian's query. Subj: "Wm WHITE avd Mayflower Jhn WHITE 1587 Jamestown" See my PS: below. Best wishes, Barry PS: FYI, the same issue interested me in another White, John WHITE, who was a founder of the FIRST Anglo settlement of the US, at Jamestown in 1587ish, where the FIRST American citizen, Virginia DARE, was born to Eleanor (DARE) WHITE, w/o Ananias Dare, d/o John WHITE, appointed by Sir Walter Raleigh to lead the founding settlement, which became known as the Lost Colony. I am a Dare. ----- Original Message ----- From: Jim ludwigsen To: Barry Wetherington Sent: Tuesday, January 27, 2004 5:24 PM Subject: Page 3 " A Viking Greeting " Page 3 Barry Regards Jim Ludwigsen
