My ancestor Eliphalet Whitaker b. 1732 in Huntington, Long Island, N.Y. and his wife Ruth Bayles had a son SAMUEL Whitaker b. 26 November 1756 in Somerset Co., N.J. and died 6 June 1818 in Indiana. He married (1) Mary Rivers, and (2) Eliza M. Manning. They lived in Newark, N.J. It was said by Littell in "Family Records or Genealogies of Pasaaic Valley N.J. and Vicinity" that he did not accompany his father and the rest of the family when they left New Jersey since he was already married. Samuel had the following children: (1) Mary Whitaker b. 20 December1784 died 1870 m. John Taylor (2) Benjamin S. Whitaker b. 16 Feburary 1787 d. 27 Oct. 1827 he married Unknow Gifford. Benjamin was a lawyer. (3) Samuel Whitaker b. 11 June 1789 d. 16 May 1818 (4) Phoebe Whitaker b. 9 July 1792 died 22 April 1810 (5) Elisha Whitaker b. 21 February 1795 died unknown. He m. (1) Ann M. Finley dau. of Alexander Finley & SusanWhitaker (2) Eliza M. Manning dau. of Nathaniel Manning. Elisha was a druggist in Newark, N.J> Why was Samuel Whitaker in Indiana, and where had he been before he came there? What happened to his descendants? His brothers Benjamin, and Platt owned land in Burke Co, later Jefferson Co., GA. His son Benjamin S. Whitaker had two sons known to me Henry Hobart Whitaker and William M. Whitaker who died July 1895. William M. Whitaker was a merchant in Philadelphia, PA. and had a son John D. Whitaker b.1853. Son Elisha had Samuel Elisha Whitaker b. 1831 and Alexander Finley Whitaker b. 1834 d. 1852. I need to find descendants of this WHITAKER line. Does anyone sound familiar? Joan Whitaker Landrum
