I came across the following family in the 1860 Census of Illinois, LaSalle Co, IL, pg 1078, dwelling 3290, family 3304: Ambrose WHITAKER, age 43, born NJ, farmer, $500 personal property; Julia age 36 born MA; Ida age 7 born IL; female Eda (sic) age 4 born IL; dau Aselath (sic) age 4/12 born IL. Next door is a possible brother, William WHITAKER, age 43, also born NJ. These families interest me for two reasons: (1) I think that most if not all of the early Whitakers from southwest NJ are descended from Richard Whitaker, my immigrant ancestor who arrived in 1670; (2) Ambrose is an important name in my line, and though I haven't yet connected him into my line, I think he is a fit somewhere.
