In the Spring of 1777, according to the "History of Scott County, VA": ".....the Indians, finding that they had been discovered, and that they were not strong enough to attack or besiege the fort [Fort Blackmore], started in the direction of Castlewood...... the Indians... captured two women on the way - Polly Alley at Osborns Ford, as they went up the river, and Jane Whitaker near Castlewood." Polly and Jane were taken to Ohio through eastern KY and later escaped and made their way back to SW VA. Can anyone further embellish the folklore and legend of this story - and better yet - can anyone identify the family of Jane Whitaker?
