    1. Re: [WHITAKER] John Whitaker Family of Ky

    3. I am out of town for awhile and do not have my detail files with me, so I can provide some more details later. It is a logical assumption that all these children of John Whitaker who died in 1713 in Baltimore County, MD. were born in Baltimore County, MD. as the entries were all made in the Parish Register of the County which still exists. As Ron correctly points out, the area they were from is now a part of Harford County, MD, which was created from Baltimore County in 1776. However, all the pre 1700 children except Peter, were entered in batch at one time, which could indicate they lived elsewhere when the children were born and moved to the Baltimore County, MD area. John Whitaker SR is not listed in the 1696 Baltimore County, MD tax list and first shows up in the 1699 Tax list which coincides I think with the batch entries in the Parish Register of the births of his children, including two not listed below, daugthers Elizabeth born January 12, 1787, and Ruth born March 27, 1690. Where John Whitaker SR. cames from continues to be a mystery, although I believe it is fairly certain the family originated in Lancashire County, England, probably in the Parish of Rochdale, perhaps John himself or perhaps one of two generations before. John Whitaker Jr (rev John of KY I will call John III, he was the son of Charles, son of John Sr.) died in Baltimore County MD April 10,1720. Charles Whitaker (father of rev John of Shelby County KY) died in Baltimore County, MD., Oct. 3, 1739. Either Peter or Abraham I believe moved with his son (I am not sure who was the father) about 1770 to Orange County, NC. and died there. I am not sure when son Isaac was born, but in John Sr. will it seems clear he was a minor in 1713 and was the son of a second wife and younger than Abraham born 1702. So where was John Whitaker Sr. who died in Baltimore County MD in 1713 from? Two theories I am pursuing: 1. Quaker Connection to PA. Charles is a rare first name of those times in the late 1600's. Charles was never one of the top first names in England and it fell into even lower use following the English Civil War in the 1640's which culminated in the beheading of King Charles I of England by the Puritans. Even after the restoration of King Charles II in 1660, the name was not popular as Charles II was not particularly popular. So, since John Sr. named his second son Charles, it would indicate a liklihood that his Grandfather or a close kinsman was named Charles. The Quakers were founded by George Fox in England in the 1640's and 1650's and the group grew rapidly under a lot of persecution. Due to the religious toleration in Maryland (founded by a Catholic propietor who also knew religious persecution in England), Quakers began moving to Maryland early, long before Quaker William Penn set up the Quaker Colony of Pennsylvania in 1682. A thriving Quaker community existed in Talbot County, MD. from the 1660's. Many here on list are descended from other Whitaker lines of Joshua of PA and Mark of Baltimore County, MD. who have a Quaker connection. There is an intriquing entry in the Court Minute Books of early Chester County, PA., founded by William Penn's Quakers and located just north of Baltimore County, MD. From June 1696 through September 1698 in Chester County, PA. a Charles Whitaker is found on three coroners inquest juries. The rare first name Charles and the nearby location would seem to indicate a connection. I have not yet had a chance to further research old Chester County, PA., but I strongly suspect this Charles Whitaker of Chester County, PA to be a brother, father or grandfather of our John Whitaker SR of Baltimore County, MD. 2. Theory 2, which is not necessarily mutually exclusive with a connection to Charles Whitaker of 1696 Chester County, PA. The Virginia Connection. There is a long standing family tradition in Pittsburgh area Whitaker's, descended from brothers of our Rev John of KY, that the family originally came from early Virginia. There is some logic to this. First the rare first name Charles Whitaker is found about 1700 in I believe Warwick County, Virginia (I need my files to check details.) Again, the combination name Charles Whitaker is rare enough to suggest any Charles Whitaker's of about 1700 are closely related. The other historical clue comes from the history of early Virginia. In 1676 there was a rebellion in Virginia against the colonial Governor known as Bacon's Rebellion. If was eventually put down and notes from the times indicate that many on the losing side fled north to Maryland. Interesting names found in pre 1676 Virginia that show up about 1700 in Baltimore County Maryland include Humphrey and Cadwallader Jones. The first stop after Virginia would have likely been St. Mary's County in far Southern Maryland right across the Potomac from Virginia. Baltimore County, MD was not opened for settlement until about the 1690's. The early records of St. Mary's County are scarce and although they contain no reference to people named Whitaker, there is a land tract name called Whitaker, which would likley indicate a Whitaker Family passed through long enough to lend their name to a land tract before moving on. There are misc references to early John Whitaker's in pre 1676 Virginia who then disappear. My current guess is that our John Whitaker who died in 1713 in Baltimore County, MD was the son of a John Whitaker and grandson of a Charles Whitaker, based on how he named his first two children. And that father John Whitaker was a resident of Virginia who fled north after Bacon's rebellion to first St. Mary's Maryland, and then he or his children further north to Baltimore County, MD and perhaps Chester County, PA. My guess is that Grandfather Charles Whitaker was born in Lancashire England, Parish of Rochdale. However, these are only educated guesses at present. Still researching. That's as far as my research goes at present.
