    1. Re: [WHITAKER] Surry County, NC Whitakers

    3. Richard, I was one of those folks on the Whitaker list speaking of William and Jonathan and Jonathan II's daugher Lucinda Whitaker who married Abner Bagby - these are my ancestors. To answer your questions: William and Jonathan who lived near each other were brothers - at least Jonathan I and William were brothers - William and wife Mary (surname unknown or also a Whitaker) also had a son named Jonathan and for clarity sake the researchers of this family call him Jonathan II - he is my ancestor and he was married to Sarah Elizabeth Howard, daugther of a William Howard. Jonathan I was married to Anna Dezern in 1780 in Surry Co. NC - I have no other information on him (no children known) except that he was born 1763 and died 1819. His brother William is said to have been born abt. 1750 and died Aug. 24, 1825 in Surry Co. NC. There are no other known siblings to these two men. Their father is said to be a Robert Whitaker with wife named Mary. Robert apparrently died close to 1788 right before signing his land grant in Surry Co. - his name was on the deed but crossed out and his wife Mary signed in 1788 because he had died before signing. They are said to be from Baltimore Co. MD and so far all we know is that they are NOT the Robert and Mary Hall Whitaker of Cecil Co., MD who both died there with wills on record - Robert in 1754 - with different children, no William and no Jonathan. William's wife Mary was born 1758 and died 1835 - they were married in 1722. Their children are as follows: Isaac, b. 1773 (this is the Isaac you asked about who married Nancy Elizabeth Worth), Abraham, b. 1775, Lydia b. 1779, Jonathan II b. 1782, William David Jr. b. 1785, Nancy b. 1788, Edmund b. 1790, Betsy b. 1793, Salley b. 1795, Rebecca b. 1798, Mary Polly b. 1800 and Silas. The listing for my Abner Bagby and Lucinda Whitaker on the census is interesting. They have the correct age for Abner - Lucinda was actually born in 1821 and is two years older - 29, not 27 - did women lie about their age even then????? Also interesting is Nancy Ann who is listed as being 10 years old. Her birth date is recorded as 1849 but this would have made her actually born 1839 or 1840 which I believe is really the case. Her husband was born in 1845 and perhaps she said she was born in 1849 to be younger than he rather than older. I think the census is right in this instance - because she would have been only age 1 if born in 1949 - hard to make a mistake on that! Also Zackery Taylor Bagby was NOT 3 years old in 1850 but he WAS born in 1849 and was 1 year old and therefore born AFTER Zachary Taylor was elected president. Thomas Whitaker as far as we know, although he lived near these other Whitakers in myline - is not part of this family. At least not as far as we know at this point. His father is said to be Mark Whitaker who was married to Elizabeth Empson and they were from Baltimore Co. MD - he may be a cousin to my folks...even possibly a brother although it doesn't appear to be the case. I have one other child of Thomas that you didn't have listed and that is a Margaret. I think that the Mark who signed his will WAS probably his son. I don't know of another Mark of the same age of Thomas in the area at the time to have been brother to Thomas - although since his father and son are named Mark it is also likely that he HAD a brother Mark. Are you totally confused now? I have lots more information on the family if you want it but what concerns me and others most now is trying to find where and from who our Robert and Mary Whitaker came. Records in Baltimore Co. MD seem hard to come by or non-existant for this Robert - but I don't have access to many records from that area. Do you? Any help you can give would be wonderful!!! Hope that helps clear some things up - I hope to hear from you. Susan J.
