Sorry Joyce, I messed up a little. That's what I get for trying to answer quickly. My Henry is the son of Andrew Jackson Whitaker, Abraham's brother. That would make us fourth cousins-once removed--I think. Sorry for the mistake, but I was close. I have heard about the scholarship for native Americans, but didn't have any way to prove it. Maybe by the time I go for my Doctorate I will have the info. BTW Joyce, how did you get all the way up there in MA? School is finished, I'm just job hunting right now, so it's a good opportunity to update my info. I am not sure that the Cherokee connection is through the Whitakers. My Grandmother was a DeMont, whose mother was a Wicker (all over central NC). She looked like an Indian, but I have seen a couple of other references to the Whitaker/Indian connection--so it may be.
