Hi everyone, I am very interested in this line of discussion for several reasons. My Whittaker line (William and Aaron's line out of Giles CO., VA and Mercer CO, WV) intermarried with the Osborne line in the 1890's. Every generation since then, has had at least 1 case of depression, bi-polar, and other undiagnosed major mental illness. I don't know which Whittaker line you are from, but it sure would be an interesting study. My 3 children (who are now 32, 30 & 29) were genetically evaluated in the mid-1980's at Bowman-Grey in Winston-Salem, NC. My sons were thought to have an inherited connective disorder from their father's family. At that time, I was told that based on family history, the chance of at least 1 of them having a major mental illness was very likely. Sure enough, 4 years later my oldest son became ill and has struggled with bi-polar/schizoaffective disorder ever since. My younger son had been diagnosed with ADHD as a pre-schooler. Also, alcoholism runs in the Whittaker/Osborne descendents. It is interesting to me, but I have little opportunity to connect with other Whittaker descendents in my line to see if the trend was a Whittaker phenomenon or a Whittaker/Osborne collision of genes.
