Hi list- sorry if I'm doing this wrong. It's my first query after subscribing for over a year. My maternal and paternal grandmothers were BOTH Whitakers from Rockcastle Co., Ky. and not related as far as anyone in either family is able to recall. In a town of 800 that,s hard to believe, But til now all info. seems to confirm this. Does anyone out there in Whitakerland have ties to this area? My paternal grandmother was Mattie Alice Whitaker b.2 Mar.1893. Parents were Martha Jane Rash and Elijah Napoleon Whitaker. She married S. R. Cromer b. 18 Nov.,1892 and they had 7 children. After Martha died, Elijah married Lula Caroline Sweeney and they had a large family of their own. Elijah's mother was Sarah Barnes, still in Rockcastle Co. Sarah b. 16 Aug.,1850-d.27 Oct. 1943,m.1.William R. Whitaker, and 2.William Harrison Bustle Bussell. Now on the maternal side, my grandmother Sarah Clella Whitaker was born in Illinois 1 Oct. 1905 although her siblings were born in Ky. 1900 census show! s both parents as being born in Ky. Did her parents,Richard Whitaker and Alice Doan make a trip to visit family and Clella was born during this period? Richard b.22 Dec. 1875. Alice b. Nov. 8,1886-d.03 Dec. 1930,parents Joe Doan and Ellen? .Richard d. Nov. 30,1899,m.10 Aug.1899.If this does not complicate things enough,Clella married Oscar Bussell.Remember this surname from the patermal side? Anyway, Oscar had a falling out with his family as a youth and moved to Rockcastle Co. He spelled it Bussell although the descendants from the Ind. line all spell it Bustle. Both say they're right and we all get together at the family reunion and joke about the other side not being able to spell. Th e problem is-is it all one line somehow connected to the second marriage of Sarah Barnes or another parrallel and until unrelated line in this small town? My other query is from this same area and concerns Joseph Cromer. This side is pretty well documented but would love any related info. si! nce it seems that all the Cromers, Bussell/Bustle and Whitaker lines indicate that the knew each other. Again SORRY this is so long-I appreciate any pointers in unraveling these lines. Sincerely,Tami
To Tami Hasting--- I have been told my grandmother was from Rockcastle County, Ky. I have nothing to verify this. Her name was Lina Whitaker, b.1886---d.1954; buried in Wilton Cemetery, Wilton, Knox County, Ky. Her father was Thomas L Whitaker and her mother was Ann Trosper. If you have anything at all on these names, I would appreciate any info you could give me.
