J: I believe you and I have corresponded before on the Whitakers. I am Harriette Bradford Young. I descend from the Whitakers of The Holme, Lancashire, England. Do you know anything about your earlier Whitakers and if it is possible they are kin to the Whalley Parish group at The Holme? I have a great deal of info and will be happy to share with you if it will help. Just let me know. Good luck. Harriette

Thank you Judy Whitaker <pajw@bigpond.com> wrote: Many thanks for your reply. I am afraid I cannot say whether we are connected to a Claude Whitaker. At this stage that name is not familiar and has not appeared in any family tree but that does not mean we are not connected Thomas Whitaker is the earliest information I have and can't seem to get back any further than 1821. I would really like to know who his parents were. I will get in touch if I find a Claude Whitaker. regards Judy Whitaker. -----Original Message----- From: lprivett [mailto:lprivett@netzero.net] Sent: Monday, May 20, 2002 9:01 AM To: WHITAKER-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [WHITAKER] WHITAKER'S of WORCESTER or WARWICJSHIRE UK ----- Original Message ----- From: "Judy Whitaker" To: Sent: Saturday, May 18, 2002 9:25 PM Subject: [WHITAKER] WHITAKER'S of WORCESTER or WARWICJSHIRE UK > Hi to the List. > > Is there anyone out there researching the WHITAKER'S of WORCESTER and > WARWICKSHIRE,UK. > > I am researching the family of Thomas WHITAKER and Ann BISHOP married > Birmingham 1821. > > Any information about a WILLIAM, THOMAS, RICHARD, JOHN, GEORGE, ANN, JANE , > and SARAH > would be greatly appreciated. To all Whitakers... Years ago, Mrs. hester Bartlett Jackson of Dobson, N.C., a Whitaker genealogist and noted historian, published a book titled "The Descendants of William Whitaker and his brother Jonathan Whitaker of Surry County, North Carolina." Many of you know of this book. It is considered the Whitaker Bible for those of you who have ancestors from this area. Her son, Dan Jackson, informs me that a revised edition will soon be published and reservations for copies are now being taken. You can get ordering information from Mr. Jackson via e-mail. His address is <djackson@aisnc.net>. David Grant Whitaker <d.e.whitaker@att.net>
I was blessed with a wonderful, loving great-grandmother: Bessie Bee Pennington (Osborne.) She was the daughter of Margaret Ann Whittaker (Pennington), daughter of William Aaron Whitaker. His father was Aaron Whitaker, and his father was Joseph Whitaker. They were from Giles CO., VA and on to Mercer Co., WV. When I was an infant, in 1947, my own mother had a nervous breakdown. My great-grandmother, at the age of 72, took me to live with her in the coal fields of southern West Virginia, where she ran a boarding house for the miners. She should have been enjoying her golden years with no responsibilities, instead of raising babies. But, she never seemed to be short of love, hugs or kisses for me. We would walk up the hill to pick her beans and tomatoes, and sometimes cross the highway to the general store. She taught me of God, patience, forgiveness, morality, tolerance, and living each day as if it were your last. I owe more to her than I can ever express. In 1969, she got to hold my son, her great-great-grandchild. She died in April of 1972, the same month my youngest child and only daughter was conceived. Every good thing I am as a mother is a gift from her....and I hope she is smiling as she looks down from Heaven at me now. Kyleen Gavin

Hi, Thank you Glenn, our List Administrator, for a wonderful request regarding our Mothers. My Mother was, LYDIA BELLE (SHUPE) WHITTAKER, born 6 January 1910 in Spring Valley, Grayson County, Virginia. My parents were married in Amelia County Court House, Virginia on 6 June 1925 and then they moved to Pennsylvania. My mother died 23 October 2000 in Pennsylvania. To the day that she passed over she kept her Southern accent. My mom had seven babies. Four boys and three girls. Just yesterday I was thinking about my mother and the fun things she would make-up for my brothers, sisters and I when we were growing up. Like taking an old top from an ironing board, smoothing it down for us to use as an, "indoor" sliding board. Also, putting up clothes lines in the backyard so we could throw blankets over them and make tents to play in and sometimes slept in at night, until we got scared because our brothers would tell us ghost stories and inside we would go running, to our mother, of course! If it was raining out she would place the dining room chairs in the living room so we could put our blankets over them and make little houses that we could crawl through. Then there was the many times her and our father would take us down to Atlantic City to play on the Beach. (This was in the 1940's). Sometimes our parents would take us on a full day trip on a huge, Paddle Wheeler, where it sailed gracefully down the Delaware River between Pennsylvania and New Jersey. In the summer time our mother would pack a picnic lunch and take us to a park to listen to a band play in a Gazebo or off we would go to a park for a wonderful day of picnicking and then watch the 4th of July fireworks. My mother made all of our clothes and we were so proud of them. Especially our little pin-a-fores. She even made my eleventh grade Prom dress, and I felt like the Queen of the Ball. My mother was always taking in other people's children, sometimes for months at a time because their parents were having problems, and I was always sad to see them go back to their own homes. They were like having new brothers or sisters. After we all left home my Mother wanted to get a job so she became a Registered Nurse and worked at a Hospital in PA for over 25 years. Since she had nursed us kids all those years, she thought she would be good at nursing and took right to it and she really loved her job! She enjoyed her garden so we would all have fresh vegetables and could do wonders with her flowers. She made our lawns and flower beds a wonderful sight to behold. Sometimes we would be laying out on the lawn watching the clouds drift by and she would come out and made it even more enjoyable for us. During the winter she would go sledding with us too. What wonderful memories we have of her! My Mother was the backbone of our family and I miss her and love her and we were so lucky to have had her with us for ninety years. Now she's resting at peace with our Father and two brothers. Nancy (Whittaker) Faulkner

The two messages regarding William Whitaker, his children and widow are interesting. Who is the widow who was unable to care for the children? Am wondering if this William Whitaker is related to the William Whitaker family who lived in Nacogdoches Co., TX from the early 1800s. I have relatives in that area. I know back to my great grand father and that is all the further I know back. Most of his family is in Grayson county and were buried in a private cemetry near Baywood, just outside of Galax. My grandfather lived in Carroll county. I know of Cana, but I don't know if that was my relation that is buried there. If you would like to pass along the information I would appreciate it. And if anyone knows anymore about any Robert Whitaker that lived a good part of his life in Baywood I would appreciate hearing it. I believe Robert came from N.C., but I don't know his linage any further back. Thank You, Ben Whitaker
to Brenda Whitaker Manning...the information I gave you is for a JOHN WHITTAKER who was in Cambridge and Watertown...the Boston area...in 1660. This JOHN was probably born about 1641 and had a brother RICHARD. Some genealogies, in fact, indicate that it was his daughter, SARY (Sarah) who married WILLIAM YOUNG, and was the grandmother of Brigham Young. In addition to ABRAHAM, there is also a RICHARD WHITTAKER in Rehoboth, also in greater Boston area in your time frame.Good luck!
Hi Thanks for try, but my Whitakers were mostly in Binghamton, NY/Bradford Co.,PA areas. I think they are descended from Abraham from England to Salem, MA, but not at all sure at this point. Good luck with your search! Marie Whitaker Sheldon

Was getting a lottery ticket yesterday (no. . . didn't win), and stopped by St. Pauls Church of the Brethren in Cana, VA and took down several WHITAKER names from their cemetery. Does anyone on the WHITAKER list have ancestors in that area? Will be happy to provide the information on them. The name of the church is interesting, but am wondering if that church was under another name in the past since it had several Civil War veterans. Bob Carter Greensboro, NC
