    3. Allen, Beware of this RIPOFF. I'll bet the letter in the mail was from a person with the last name of Whitaker. I get several a year from a Ron Cosner that I'll bet doesn't exist. they offer Cosner books, mugs with crests on them, towels with my Surname, placks, etc. I did a search on this group and found some places that will provide you some background to make your own decision: http://www.genealogy.org/~ngs/text/halberts.txt http://www.wwnet.net/~krugman1/gentext/scam.txt http://www.iarelative.com/rip_off.htm Goodluck, Mike Cosner -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] <[email protected]> To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Date: Saturday, November 15, 1997 9:43 PM Subject: New World Book of Whitakers? >Hi Everybody: > >I received in the mail today an offer to purchase "The New World Book of >Whitakers" published by Halberts in Bath, Ohio. > >Has anyone ever heard of either this book, or this publisher? 3. I haven't! Be careful of those book offers. I wouldn't order unless I know someone else has it. 10 or 15 years ago there was a company offering family history books that didn't exist. Unless you know the company, be careful... 2. Hi Everybody: I received in the mail today an offer to purchase "The New World Book of Whitakers" published by Halberts in Bath, Ohio. Has anyone ever heard of either this book, or this publisher? From what I have received, this sounds like a reasonable deal. Although, according to the literature enclosed with the order form, virtually everyone on the Whitaker mailing list should have received this offer as well. I would appreciate any feedback. I hope everyone has a pleasant weekend. Allen A. Whitaker [email protected]

    3. I agree with Linda. There have been many companies exploiting the current passion for family history and I would be suspicious of this one. I know someone who ordered a book such as this for another surname, and it turned out to be a list of telephone numbers gleaned from American telephone directories and a several page history of the surname. It would have been no use to me. The way I see it, I have spent the last twelve years and a lot of money trying to trace and document my Whitakers, so why should anyone else do the same for people who do not belong to them? I wouldn't touch this book with a ten foot barge pole. Carolyn ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

    1. Whit(t)aker Vital Statistics (Rhode Island)
    2. Bob Whittaker
    3. Hi Everyone! I have scanned the Rhode Island Vital statistics index for the Whit(t)aker surname from the RI State Archives. The information I have is in seven separate documents as follows: Birth (1853 - 1878) Marriage Bride (1853 - 1878) Marriage Groom (1853 - 1878) Death (1852 - 1878) Birth (1879 - 1889) Marriage Bride (1879 - 1889) Death (1879 - 1889) I will be scanning the Birth (1890 - 1900) index within the next few days, and will be returning to the archives to obtain other index information for Rhode Island Whit(t)akers. The index information for Births includes name of child, names of parents, date of birth and reference to town, book, page of record. The index information for Marriage includes names of Bride, Groom, date of marriage and reference to town, book and page of record. The index information for death includes name of deceased, parents names date of death and reference to town, book and page of record. If anyone would like this information, please let me know. If you find someone in the indices, it will be possible to obtain a copy of the actual town record from the archives. Hope this information will be helpful! Bob Whittaker

    1. WEST, WHITAKER, McCOMAS and HAYS
    2. Ralph West
    3. Researching: WEST, WHITAKER, LOWERY, McCOMAS & HAYS The following is a summary of the information I have on the WEST, WHITAKER, McCOMAS and HAYS families I am researching. I am looking for information on the ancestors of my GGG/GF Joseph WEST. In the WEST line I have good Information back to my GGG/GF Joseph West Sr. B. 1757, location unknown D. 1841 Allegheny Co., PA. His second wife Catherine WHITAKER is my GGG/GM. His first wife was Mary Hay LOWERY (daughter of Colonel Alexander LOWERY of Lancaster Co., PA).I have several references in histories listing Joseph's father as Edward WEST who moved to Washington Co. PA (near present day Pittsburgh) from Loudoun Co. VA. The histories give no other information on Edward. I do have a DAR application listing an Edward WEST who served in the Revolutionary War. The application lists Edward as serving in the Cumberland Co., PA militia. He was born in Loudoun Co. VA June 16, 1729, married Sept. 6 1769 to Elizabeth McCOMIS, he died in Washington Co., PA June 14, 1812 (Elizabeth may be his 2nd or later wife). The application listed the following sons of Edward, (1) Edward, (2) Jonathan b. May 8, 1776, married Frances Nixon, and (3) Thomas. Joseph was not listed on the application as a son of Edward. In the WHITAKER line the information is well documented back to John WHITAKER D. Nov. 27, 1713 who is believed to have been an indentured servant arriving in VA about 1690. This John WHITAKER is the GG/GF of my GGG/GM Catherine Whitaker WEST. In the McCOMIS or McCOMAS line the only information I have is the Elizabeth McComis listed on the DAR application. I am willing to share any information on the lines. Ralph WEST [email protected]

    2. fwalker
    3. Can anyone solve this problem? Joseph Sebastian (c1778-1865 Lincoln Co,TN) md. Mary Summers in 1800 Sumner Co, TN. According to my information, his 2nd wife was Nancy Whitaker (c1790- bef 1837 Lincoln Co, TN) d/o John Whitaker and Martha Willcockson. Others have this same Nancy Whitaker as the wife of Isaac Joseph Sebastian (1808-1880) s/o Joseph Sebastian (above). She was old enough to be his mother. The tombstones in Mulberry Cemetery, Lincoln Co, TN list Isaac Joseph Sebastian and his wife, Eliza (she was the d/o Daniel Whitaker and Nancy Sebastian d/o Joseph Sebastian and Mary Summers). This is very confusing, I know, but hopefully someone else will have this same family and can straighten us out. Thanks for your help. Frann

    1. Re: Barent WHITAKER
    2. Sandy: The index for the Burhans Genealogy lists a "Hermanus" Whitaker on page 33. I do not have that particular page, so I cannot give you any information about him. But I can give you information about his ancestors. Barent Whitaker is listed on page 29 of the Burhans Genealogy as the third child of Catryna Burhans and Samuel Whitaker. He was baptized 18 April 1742 and married Geertrug Minkelaar on 22 December 1770. She was the daughter of Harmanus Minkelaar and Grietje Hoffman and was baptized at Kingston 24 March 1754. Catryna Burhans is listed on page 26 of the Burhans Genealogy as the fifth child of Barent Burhans and Margriet Jans Mathysen. She was baptized at Kingston 10 August 1714 and married Samuel Whitaker at Kingston 10 March 1734. Samuel Whitaker was the son of James Whitaker and Elisabeth Titsoot and was baptized at Kingston 25 December 1715. Barent Burhans was the eldest son of Jan Burhans to reach his majority. He was baptized in Kingston 24 Aprl 1681 and married Margriet Jans Matthyssen in Kingston. She was the daughter of Jan Matthyssen and Magdalena Blanchan, and was baptized in Kingston 14 January 1684 and died 9 July 1759. There is some interesting biographical information about Barent on pages 8-10. Jan Burhans is listed on page 3 of the Burhans Genealogy. Jan was the son of Jacob Burhans, but his mother's name is unknown. Jan arrived in America 16 April 1663 on the ship Bonte Koe (Spotted Cow). He married Helena Traphagen (date not known, but in 1675 or earlier per church records). Helena Traphagen was the daughter of Willem Jansen Traphagen by his first wife, Jannetje Claessen Groenvis, of Meppelt. Willem Traphagen first settled in American about 1660 at Bushwick, Long Island, but was banished by the authorities at New Amsterdam to Wiltwyck, 12 May 1664, for insubordination (carrying a disrespectful letter to the authorities for another man). A lot of biographical information for both Jan Burhans and Willem Traphagen is included in the Burhans Genealogy. Jacob Burhans' name first appears in Kington, NY records in 1660. There is some biographical information about him. He probably came from Holland. I am descended from Wilhelmus Burhans, brother of Catryna Burhans (both are children of Barent Burhans and Margriet Jans Mathysen (her name is spelled differently in different sections of the Burhans Genealogy)). I realize this does not answer your question about Hermanus/Harmon. Berta
