    1. Whitaker - RI Cemetery Database
    2. Bob Whittaker
    3. Hi Everyone! I have finished scanning the Whitakers recorded in the Rhode Island Cemetery database. There are 218 names recorded. The information is in the form of an alphabetical index with Last Name, First, Birth, Death, Cemetery and Age columns. Additional information is probably available by checking the individual name record in the database. This system is not on-line, however I will look up information on the RI Historical Society computer if you send a request for specific records. Additional information sometimes includes age at death (yr., mo., days), Veteran information, inscription data when available. If you find a specific individual you are interested in, I can find the name and actual cemetery location. To find more information about the RI Cemetery Database project, go to: http://members.tripod.com/~debyns/cemetery.html When reviewing the RI Cemetery data it is helpful to know the following: Cumberland, founded in 1774 was formerly Attleboro Gore, MA Woonsocket was formed from part of Cumberland in 1867 Pawtucket, founded 1828, part from Pawtucket, MA, part from N. Providence (1874) East Providence, founded 1862 from Rehoboth, MA and Seekonk, MA For more information about Towns of RI, go to: http://users.ids.net/~jcraig/ri_towns.htm If anyone would like a copy of the Whitaker information in the database, please contact me and I will attach the file to an e-mail. Happy Hunting! Bob Whittaker

    2. Bob Whittaker
    3. Hi Everyone! Finally made it to the Rhode Island Historical Society Library today. I was able to access the Cemetery database and print out the names of over 200 Whitakers buried in the Rhode Island (Parts of RI were once MA, so if you are missing SE Massachusetts ancestors, they could be in RI!) I have a listing of the Rehoboth Whitakers buried in the Newman Cemetery in East Providence (which was originally the "ring of the town" in Rehoboth). There are over 25 Whitakers buried in the Newman Cemetery! I have recorded the Whitakers listed in other cemeteries in Rehoboth, MA. Am in the process of scanning the Cemetery Database index for Whitakers and will place the info in a txt file for anyone who wants it. Should have this complete by Monday or sooner. If you would like me to check for a specific individual before Monday, send a note. Keep in touch! Bob Whittaker

James WHITAKER's will probated 1782 in Camden, SC. James & Catherine WHITAKER had a son, James, Jr - there is no other information on him in this book. 1. Re: This is my Whitaker bunch - stuck at James Martin
    2. Paul Whitaker
    3. Kathy asked for more info: Here is some - more may follow: Taken from my father’s hand - John Paul Whitaker, son of John Harrison Whitaker, son of James Martin Whitaker. (I am Paul Harrison Whitaker - son of John Paul) And I quote: My great grandparents (James Martin’s parents) lived in North Carolina. Their plantation was ‘across the fence’ from the Baker plantation. James Martin married Sarah Ann Baker. During the war the yankee army took what they wanted in the way of cattle, food, whatever, then burned the rest. After the war, James Martin and co. moved in the vicinity of Springfield, Missouri. Sarah’s brother Jim was with them. They never married. Grandpa and Uncle Jim (Brothers-in-law) decided to go to Texas. The means for hitch-hiking were lacking so they walked all the way to Gainesville, Texas, just south of the Red River from Ardmore. When they came to rivers, creeks, etc., Grandpa removed his shoes and carried them then put them on again on the other side. Uncle Jim wore his shoes through the water, but his feet were cold all day. I don’t know what year grandpa and Uncle Jim went to Texas but the dates of the birth of the first child was 1870. My dad, the baby, was born in 1886. Uncle Bob was the oldest. He was born before they left Missouri. Gainsville seemed to be the main place of residence, but they moved about, for my dad (John Harrison) was born in Valley Mills, Bosque County, Texas. Grandpa was back in Gainesville. James Martin Whitaker was a cannoneer a lot of the time. In one battle he was firing a cannon to the Union side to a meadow across a river where two of his brotherss were firing at him. He used anything he could get for cannon fodder. He used pieces of log chain or whatever. He would light the fuse then quickly climb up a sapling. He thought that would ease the concussion to the ears. He fired so many times , blood would seep out of his ears. As a guard at the entrance to the army camp, Grandpa (James Martin) was posted guard. Everyone who approached the entrance had to dismount, give their name, rank and serial number and date of birth. A general on a horse came up and was stopped by grandpa with the rifle at the ready, “Dismount, give your name, rank, serial number and date of birth.” The general just would not and said, “Aw Whit, you know who I am”. Grandpa barked “at the count of three, I will fire! At the count of two, the general was on the ground, singing his song. As he mounted his horse, he chuckled and said, “Whit, you are a good soldier.” The last battle James Martin was in left him severely wounded. He was shot in the leg and his company thought he was dead so they left him. When the Union soldiers came he was setting up. They told him to march. He told them that when he walks, his wound bleeds. A soldier drew his gun and said he will shoot if he doesn’t march. Grandpa tried but fell down again. The soldier shot him in the same leg and left him for dead. Later a Union doctor found him and doctored him until he was well. The story has it that his brothers, who had been fighting against him, left him for dead. After his recovery and return to the homestead the brothers were reportedly mad and the parents were overjoyed. It is also said that he was a part of Stonewall Jackson's group under General Marmaduke. ==== For what it's worth. Paul Whitaker

    1. Whitaker Biography in Kansas
    2. Lynn Proud
    3. Hi gang, Here is another biography from: KANSAS COLLECTION BOOKS William G. Cutler's History of the State of Kansas ATCHISON COUNTY, Part 27 H. L. WHITAKER, was born in Hampden County, Mass., July 24, 1838. He lived in Massachusetts until he was fourteen years of age, when he left home and went to West Meriden, Conn., to learn the machinist trade, at which he worked until January 1, 1855, when he went to Brown County, Ill., where he engaged in farming. In the fall of 1856, he moved the Rev. Pardee Butler from Brown County, Ill., to Atchison County, Kas. Mr. Whitaker then returned to Brown County, Ill., and moved his mother, Mrs. Emeline Whitaker, to Pardee, Atchison County, Kas., took a claim for her in the spring of 1857; left his mother and two brothers on it, while he went to Henderson County, Ill., and engaged in farming. While here, he was married to Miss Harriet E. Merriman, of West Meriden, Conn., September 22, 1857. In the fall of 1858, he came to Pardee, Atchison County, Kas., his sole capital being a team and ten cents in money. He rented a small place that year, and his mother gave him forty acres of the quarter section that he took up for her in the spring of 1857, which is in the southeast quarter of Section 33, Township 6, Range 19. Mr. Whitaker has added to his farm and now has about 500 acres. He has built three houses on this place, the last one costing him $3,600. April 1, 1882, Mr. Whitaker purchased the retail department of the Western Hardware Company. He deals in farm implements, barb wire, shelf hardware, and everything appertaining to an establishment of the kind. Their children are Lyman M., Frank S., Emma M., Mary I., Joseph A., Harry O., Hattie E., John Allen and Arthur. Mr. Whitaker was a member of the Pardee Seminary Co., retaining that position about fourteen years. He was Overseer and Trustee of the Township six years, and Justice of the Peace from 1872 until the spring of the present year, 1882. He has also from the first been identified with the interests of the schools, having held several offices on the School Board. THE END***

    3. Hi gang, Was out surfing and came across this page: http://raven.cc.ukans.edu/~hisite/kancoll/books/cutler/cutler.html It has lots of wonderful information and also had this biography in case someone lost this man: KANSAS COLLECTION BOOKS William G. Cutler's History of the State of Kansas DONIPHAN COUNTY, Part 5 JAMES M. WHITTAKER, farmer, P. O. Doniphan, came to Kansas in the spring of the year 1855, and located in Doniphan County, where he has lived since. He was born in Huntingdon County, Pa., June 8, 1853, and lived in his native place until his third year, when he moved to Kansas with his parents. Mr. W. was married in the fail of 1876, in Doniphan County, to Louise Michaels, a native of Kansas. They have one child, a daughter, whose name is Jessie. Mr. Whittaker owns a farm of 240 acres about three and a half miles from the city of Doniphan. It is mostly upland, all cleared except twenty acres of excellent timber land, which is covered principally by oak and walnut trees. Mr. W. pays particular attention to raising grain, hogs and cattle. He has a fine orchard on his farm, which covers about four acres, and which contains about 600 bearing apple trees. The farm is supplied with plenty of good water, a fine stream running through it. His residence and farm buildings are large and new, and well adapted for the purposes for which they were intended. THE END* I didn't check for other Whitakers, I was looking for a different family at the time but there may be more there in other counties. Happy Hunting, Lynn
