Hi, I am trying to find any information I can on my Whitaker line. Here is all I have: My grandfather was Ben Whitaker (now deceased), born in Hindman KY in Jan 1920. His father was also named Benjamin. He was killed in a coal mine explosion about 2 months before my grandfather was born (my grandfather's mother was Viola Slone from Knott Co. KY) My great-grandfather Benjamin was born 2/15/1899 and was the son of Susan McIntyre Whitaker and unknown Whitaker. The reason I say that my great-great-grandfather is unknown is because I only have his nickname or several variations of his nickname (it is either Lije, Litt, or Levi or something close to those names). In the 1900 soundex, it lists him as Litt (or it appears to read that way), born Oct 1868, wife Susan, born Jan 1877, daughter Victoria, born 1892, daughter Alice, born 1894 and my great-grandfather Benjamin, born 1899. I have been unable to find any info on my great-great-grandfather. What I would like to do is determine who his parents were, and in so doing, tie him in to the Whitakers of the Letche! ! r Co. KY area. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Warner Paris [email protected]

Hi, Glenn -- You wrote: >Hello Whitaker List, > I'm looking for the Whitaker Family Coat of Arms >for a booklet on our line here in southern WV. > Is there anyone who can guide me on obtaining it >for this printing. > Please "E" me privately with any information, OK >Glenn Belcher, Princeton WV [email protected] I would like to pass along to you and others on the Whitaker list this "Product Alert" that I reprinted in my Sanders newsletter a couple of years ago. Coats of Arms may dress up your family history, but in most cases, they are improper to use. A Product Alert! The National Genealogical Society, with the support of the Federation of Genealogical Societies, advises you to be on the alert when considering the purchase of products based solely on sumames. Coats of Arms Several companies sell coats of arms or "ancestral arms" for thousands of surnames. Some employ artists to design original coats of arms; others adapt coats of arms found in books. Coats of arms purchased in shopping malls or by mail order are most likely not related in any way to the purchaser's ancestry. Rules on the use of authentic coats of arms differ. You may rightfully use British coats of arms only if you can trace your ancestry though the male line directly to the man who was first granted that coat of arms. To ensure authenticity, you should register your arms with the English College of Heralds or the Scottish Lord Lyon, King of Arms. History of Your Surname A number of companies sell certificates or books that supposedly detail the history of your surname. Some also sell lists of addresses for people with the same last name. These companies mass-produce their products, changing only a few details to make them appear different. Information about various individuals with the same last name is not a family history. A list of names and addresses for individuals who simply share a surname is neither a family history nor a form of genealogy. Unless your surname is unique, you should not assume that people with the same last name are your relatives. -National Genealogical Society Ethics Committee Contact the National Genealogical Society for services to individnal genealogists: 4527 17th Street North, Arlington, VA 22207-2399, 703/525-0050. It's interesting to see another Bonner researching the Whitaker line. Unfortunately, I don't see any connections to my own line of Whitakers, that came from Canada, into Tioga County, Pennsylvania, and thence to Michigan and then, Thayer, Neosho County, Kansas, before dying off without sons, leaving the surname to be swallowed by Williams, Cross, and many others. Regarding Velma Vera Walters Moore who passed away on her 95th birthday, April 6, 1998. I had just recently made contact with Velma, who is my 2nd cousin twice removed, through her daughter Billie Beth. Velma contributed a lot to my Whitaker genealogy, those that came to Nacogdoches County, TX from Lincoln County, TN. I wish I had made her acquaintance years ago. I am saddened by her passing. -Robert Scott Whitaker

Norma, Welcome back from vacation! Isn't it nice to know that people care. 2000+ messages waitng. There are two URLs to know. The first is Larry Stephen's home page. He is at Indiana U and owns a gazillion lists - all on RootWeb. They are grouped by family name, geographical region, and special interests. I'm putting this up on CLOUD-L, WHITAKER-L, & HUGHES-L because the list of lists is very good. I forget at the moment which of the Cloud cousins pointed me to this site, but I am very thankful! I'll find your name later. http://php.indiana.edu/~stephenl/genealog.htm#top for the inherited diseases site it is: http://[email protected] I hope you all find the clues you need. Donna & other cousins, There is a wonderful website called: GENUKI Home Page (stands for Genealogy in the United Kingdom & Ireland) http://www.midas.ac.uk/genuki It has every instruction and suggestion you will need for doing research in the UK and Ireland. It is very similar to GenWeb or RootsWeb. As it is very new, it is very organized. Another webasite for research across the waters is: International Genealogical Society http://www.igs.org/ Good luck! Ruth Ann Harris [email protected]
