The Kershaw County Whitakers you're looking for were descendants of two brothers who migrated to what is now Camden from North Carolina in the 1770s. (I am descended from a nephew or a cousin who went to western SC about 30 years later.) There were at least two Willis Whitakers, plus yours: there was one in the Revolution. There were two or three major groups of Whitakers in pre-1800 North Carolina: the two brothers were descendants of a family group that left southeastern VA for northeastern NC earlier in the 1700s. Quite a few were early Methodists -- the first three generations of my family in South Carolina were Methodist clergy -- but the two brothers who went to Camden apparently moved up the social scale. (In the early days, Methodists were *not* respectable.<g>) I'd suggest that you contact the Camden Archives (1314 Broad Street/Camden, SC 29020). They're the ones with the Camden Whitaker material. (They do charge a small fee. Specifying that you just want photocopies of their Whitaker material up to whenever Willis left South Carolina should save you some money.) I live in Kershaw County, but I'm preparing to move for the second time this year. (I've found a new job, which necessitates a relocation this summer, to Clarendon County, South Carolina.) I don't know anything about this line, but they're possible offshoots from the line that migrated from southeastern VA to eastern NC (e.g. present-day Edgecombe County). They're all over the Southeast now -- I'm descended from one who left the Raleigh area for Upstate SC in or shortly after 1800 -- and quite a few were early Methodists. There were a lot of Williams and Elizabeths in this line, but I'd think you might be looking for Baptists with these Biblical names. Have you checked the N.C. Marriage Bond index? Or tried to find Wills? Elizabeth Whitaker [email protected]

    2. Jackson Cty Historical Association
    3. ABRAHAM WHITAKER made his will on December 10, 1803, Orange Co, NC, and died there in 1808. His children deducted from his will: 1. Hannah Whitaker, born 1769-1770 in Orange Co, NC, died 1843 in Jackson Co, AL. Married Abimelech (Benelege) Barbee on Nov 10, 1789. They moved to Oglethorpe Co, Georgia and lived near Hannah's aunt and uncle, Richard and Sarah (Whitaker) Rhodes in 1806-1808. Hannah and Abimelech moved from GA to Franklin Co, TN and then to Jackson Co, AL by 1820. 2. William Whitaker, born 1770/1771, Orange Co, NC, died 1832. Married Lucy Holloway on Mar 4, 1797. 3. Isaac Whitaker, married Catherine Horn. 4. Abraham Whitaker III, married Elizabeth Ckopley. 5. Jacob Whitaker, married Mary REading/Redding. 6. James Whitaker, married Peggy Laycock. 7. Elizabeth Whitaker, married ? Riley. 8. Mary Whitaker, married ?Riley. In 1803, when Abraham Whitaker made his will, his wife's name was Martha. However, it is thought that the Mother of his children or at least the oldest children wa Mary Poteet. Can someone verify these two marriages? Where is Abraham Whitaker buried in Orange Co, NC? Who were his parents? Ann B. Chambless [email protected]

    1. The Whitaker Family History & Genealogical Research Homepage has Moved/PLEASE READ.
    2. Allen A. Whitaker
    3. Hi Everybody: This message is to announce that the Whitaker Family History and Genealogical Research Homepage has moved. The new URL address is: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Park/3741/genhopg1.html with a personal index at: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Park/3741 I know that you all have been very patient while I have been moving the site to its new home at Geocities. It has taken me since March to complete this move for a number of reasons, not the least of which is my relative lack of expertise with HTML code, and the fact that I am moving physically, myself at the end of June, and thus have been very busy packing up my home. Most of the last few weeks has been spent de-bugging the graphics on the page so they load properly. I chose a Geocities site because it's free (a major consideration!) and because I wanted a site that was not ISP dependent, as the now "old" site at http://members.aol.com/allwhit/genhopg1.html is, which means the server space at http://members.aol.com/allwhit/genhopg1.html requires that I have an account with AOL. Since the AOL browser does not work on my system, and since no one from my OEM to Microsoft Tech Support can tell me why, I have had to switch to another ISP and use Netscape as my browser. I have maintained my AOL account since March soley so that the Whitaker Family History and Genealogical Research Homepage is available to you all until I could find an alternate site. I will maintain the "old" URL for the page until the end of June, when I will be closing my AOL account for good. I am anxious to do this, since I have had to pay AOL to keep an account open that I cannot use. I will attempt to place an announcement at the "old" address, but so far, I have been unable to upload any changes through my current ISP. This is why you have not seen the page updated since March. Those of you who have sent me changes and additions to your Whitaker Research information to be posted on the page should see your changes/additions within the next couple of days at the new site, and any of you with changes to your Whitaker research information can now send them to me at [email protected] Once again, the new URL address for the Whitaker Family History and Genealogical Research Homepage is: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Park/3741/genhopg1.html Finally, I would greatly appreciate it if you could e-mail me back and confirm that you are able to access the Whitaker Homepage at it's new address. Since the Whitaker Homepage has so many links to other researchers home pages, e-mail, and other sites, I simply cannot verify all of them. If you find a link that is incorrect, or non-functional, please let me know, as this will be a big help to me. Thanks again to everyone for your patience during this transition. Please continue to enjoy the Whitaker Homepage, and be sure to send me your updates! I hope everyone has a great summer. All the Best, Allen A. Whitaker [email protected] Administrator, Whitaker Family History & Genealogical Research Homepage.

Are your ancestors by any chance Mark Whitaker (1750-1842) and Catherine Boone (1760-1845)? They were married in Rowan Co., NC 1 Mar 1780. I descend from their daughter, Mary. Would be interested in sharing info if we connect. Regards, Nancy Cason [email protected]

    1. Whitakers in Yorkshire, England
    2. Hi- I'm just getting started on my Whitaker research. My great3 grandparents were Benjamin Whitaker and his wife Sarah (perhaps with the maiden name Whitaker), who were married at St. Peter's, Leeds, Yorkshire, England in 1810. Benjamin was employed in the textile industry. (According to IGI records, based on parish church extractions -- and needing confirmation) their children were: Hannah (b. 1811), Sarah (b. 1813), Thomas (b. 1816), Maria (my great2 grandmother, b. 1818), Martha (b. 1821), Benjamin (b. 1823), Caroline (b. 1825), Eliza (b. 1828), William (b. 1830), and John Mawson (b. 1837). The children were christened in Armley and Wortley by Leeds, YKS. I'd be interested in collaborating with anyone who might have a link. Thanks for your help.
