Hi, I am looking for anyone who is aquainted with my Whitaker family which lived in Berks Co. PA in the late 1700s - early to mid 1800s. Joseph Whitaker s/o James Whitaker b. August 25, 1755 in Leeds England ( joined the Dragoons and came over around 1776 to fight in the Revolutionary War) Deserted the British army in 1777 and after living in Philadelphia and Chester Co. PA married Sarah Updegrove b. 1759 d. September 15, 1823. She was the descendent of Abraham Op Den Graeff who was one of the original 13 families who settled Germantown in Philadephia. They then settled in Berks Co. on the Berks/Chester Co. line one mile south of Hopewell Furnace where Joseph was a woodchopper and weaver. He and Sara had 14 children: Francis Asbury Whitaker George Price Whitaker Grace Whitaker Hannah Whitaker Jeremiah Whitaker John Whitaker Sarah Whitaker Ann Whitaker James Whitaker Jane Whitaker Mary Whitaker Richard Whitaker b. abt 1787 Joseph Whitaker b. abt 1789 **Isaac Whitaker b. Oct. 1, 1801 d. Oct. 28, 1850 m. Mary Boice d/o Abram & Hannah Boice ( my ggg grandparents) At least 2 of the children (Joseph & George Price Whitaker went on to make their fortunes in the Iron Industry learning the trade at Hopewell and surrounding furnaces. Samuel Whitaker Penneypacker, Historian and Govenor of Pennsylvania was a g grandson of Joseph & Sarah Whitaker. Would love to exchange information on this family Joanne [email protected]
It has been some time since I posted my request for help in searching for the parents of Whittaker (also spelled Whitaker, Whitteker, etc.), Peter, b. 14 Apr 1796 in Canada. m. Ruth Lownsbery, b. 23 Apr 1799, in Schoharie County, NY, m 13 oct 1816. Moved to Tioga County, PA in 1818. Had at least 13 children, the first in NY and the rest in Tioga County, PA, where he died 29 Jan 1876. According to an 1897 vanity press article on Tioga county, Peter's father was conscripted in the War of 1812 for the British in Canada. Peter went in his stead, but either not liking to fight the rebels or deciding that discretion was the better part of valor decided to change sides and abandoned his post and went to Schoharie County, NY. I have tried looking at various Ontario sources without any luck in tracing Peter's forbears. Suggestions anyone? My cousin Robert Williams and I share this relative and will be equally interested in any hints that you might have. Bill Bonner, in Anchorage, Alaska.

In cleaning through a stack of research papers (no comments please) I found an obituary that someone sent me thinking it might be on one of my relatives. Since it isn't, I thought I'd see if anyone here can connect to him. If you recognize the person, e-mail me with your postal address and I'll send it off. *** Wilbert West Whittaker Wilbert West Whittaker of Northeast Portland died of cancer March 20 in a Portland hospital. The site is at: <http://www.longstreet.net/census.html> If you, or your County Coordinators, have access to a census and are willing to share lookups, or else already have put a copy of a census online, we would be happy to have you join us. Osiyo gohusdianadadvni Laila. I am Cherokee and am descended from some Kentucky Cherokees too. In fact, I still have family in Hazard. I am on this list looking for Elizabeth Whitaker (ABT 1900-1980) of NC/VA. My wife was always told that her grandfather was German UNTIL she showed me a picture of him and I swear he's American Indian. Her Grandfather's name was Kenneth Cramer (1923-1968.) His parents were Paul Cramer & Elizabeth Whitaker. The old people in her family won't talk about it, so we have hardly any info to work with. We have ordered some info from the Social Security Administration, so maybe we will have more soon. I know there are a good many Cherokee Whitakers, but do you know of Whitakers from any other American Indian Nations? wado egwa, Sean Williams At 02:16 PM 10/21/98 -0500, [email protected] wrote: >Maybe if we all posted our most wanted Whitaker, it would generate a >little more activity. > >I am a newbie to genealogy research. Hi all, I thought I would share with those of you whom it might help. The new Genealogy Books section of Family Tree Maker seems to have 1001 hits with the name WHITAKER. The family of Rev. Nathaniel Whitaker is in there and there are others showing up in various genealogies and such. Anyone who hasn't checked this out yet might want to, lot of good info in there, only wish it was my family! Oh.....the small problem, in order to get the "full text" of the book you have to subscribe (of course), but you can do that monthy, fairly reasonable price if you need this "priceless" information that is there. The search itself is free though, just to see what names might be showing up. Just thought I would share this with anyone who hasn't checked it out yet, hope it helps some of you! http://www.familytreemaker.com/_glc_/index.html Lynn
Hi gang, Ok all you seasoned Whitaker researchers out there, I think I finally have me a new clue here! Now, can anyone direct me?? My John Whitaker was born late 1700's sometime. He married Catharine WRIGHT in Cumberland County, KY in 1817. Catharine Wright was born ca. 1798 in NC) In 1835 they moved from Cumberland County, KY to Montgomery County, IN. There is a William Whitaker who lived in Cumberland County, KY. Among some notes that a cousin of mine has from her now deceased grandmother : The Revolutionary War records of a William Whitaker who was born on Feb. 15, 1760 in what looks like Burvin County, North Carolina. These notes are handwritten & she doesn't say who had the information she was copying. Her note says: "The data which follows are obtained from the papers on file in Revolutionary War Pension Claim S.31473 based upon the military service of William Whitaker in that war." Amoung the info there is that he joined up in Wilkes Co., Georgia in June 1776. After the war he lived in North Carolina, South Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee & then back to Kentucky. William was allowed a pension that was granted on May 26, 1834. My math says that makes him 74 years old!!! No dates are given for the various places he lived in nor were any childrens names listed or wife. Now, does anyone know of this William Whitaker or who he belonged to? Does anyone have these pension papers? I was told by another person that this William Whitaker moved to White County, TN about 1813 and might have been in Jackson County, TN prior to that (White Co. was formed from Jackson Co). He moved back to Cumberland County, KY probably around 1829. William payed taxes in White County, Tn on 30 acres of land in 1815, and he sold land in 1817 to William Hunter. In the Cumberland County, KY tax lists: 1805 July 24 - William WHITEAKER 75 acres Willis Creek 1 male over 21 1832 July 24 - William WHITEAKER 50 acres Willis Creek 1 male over 21 1836 Cumberland County surveys page 194 Cornelius m. Connor, William Whitaker, Radford and John Whitaker. My John Whitaker bought land in Montgomery County, IN on 03-Jun-1835. Is it possible that he would still be in these records in Cumberland County, KY then in 1836? Could the writing in these pension records actually have said ROWAN County, NC and not BURVIN County? I have never heard of a Burvin County, NC, did it exist? In Rowan County, NC there was a William Whitaker and his wife Abigail, they had a son named William who was born 16-Jun-1759 in Lexington, Rowan County, NC. Could this possibly be the same William as above? Does anyone out there have any information on this William born in NC, son of William and Abigail? Sorry this is rather long, but I am just hoping that one of you guys out there might pick up on one of these clues, maybe someone has more information on these William Whitakers and can tell one way or the other if these were father and son or if the William born 1759 belonged to someone else? Perhaps one of you can help point me in a direction? Thanks much, Lynn Proud [email protected]

Do you have these two Whitakers, by the wildest chance? Dennis West in Knoxville, TN
In going through my Whitaker/Whittaker notebooks last night, I came across some information that might be helpful to someone out there trying to link to England Whittakers. I was sent names and dates from a microfiche in Dorrington Parish, Lincolnshire, England and along with the names I was looking for there seems to be another family listed also. Hope this helps someone: Fiche: 221200302A These are all baptisms from the Dorrington Parish Records. 1859 Dec 25 James son of John and Frances Whittaker Farmer 1861 Feb 10 Susanah dau of John and Frances Whittaker Farmer 1862 April 6 John Mathew son of John and Frances Whittaker Farmer 1863 Oct 11 Mary Ann dau of John and Frances Whittaker Farmer 1864 Dec 22 William Thomas son of John and Frances Whittaker Farmer 1867 June 22 Herbert son of John and Frances Whittaker Farmer 1868 June 9 Alfred son of John and Frances Whittaker Farmer ***** I certainly hope this information will be of use to someone out there. I'd be interested in knowing if someone connects to these people.
