    3. Beverly and Bob, I just happen to have some stray family group work sheets that don't belong to my family, but look like they belong to yours. These sheets were prepared by a woman from Hamilton, MO, in 1995 and show a Joshua Whitaker with a spouse of Jane "Jennie" Gracey. There is no date of birth listed for Joshua but his death date is listed as 1852 in Columbia, GA. He shows up as the sixth child of William Whitaker and Abigail Baker. Let me know if you are interested in more information. Jakki Schultz

    3. To All, I am glad to see some English Whitakers show up. My Whittaker's came from England in 1851. I have them traced to John Whittaker or Whitaker Born 1724 at Todmorden, Lancashire, England, Married Betty Ramsbottom born abt 1724 Rochdale, Lancashire, England. Their son John Whittaker Jr. was born 1749 at Walden, Lancashire, England. His wife was Mary Farrar born 1749 at Spotland, Lancashire, England. I would like to communicate with other people doing English Whitaker research. For all of you that are related to Jabez Whitaker go to www.ancestry.com and put Jabez Whitaker in the search window. You can download a file with 5208 individuals in it. It is an .exe file. After you download it, and click on it, it turns into a gedcom file that you can view in any computer genealogy program. 2. Hello all! Hey, I am not too brainy where all this cyberspace stuff is concerned: Re the Whitaker digests of last week which you had to download as .mim files. My computer tells me that in order to open those files, I have to have something called "America.exe." - which evidently I don't have. Is it something I have to buy, or can it be downloaded from somewhere on the web? Or is it something I really have, and my computer is hiding it somewhere? Help! Thanks, Nancy Cason

    2. In a message dated 10/24/98 6:18:55 PM Central Daylight Time, [email protected] writes: > I am interested in knowing the English > translation for: - Spes Et Fides-. It means: Spes translates as: Hope et translates as: and Fides translates as: trust, confidence, reliance, belief, faith, promise, assurance, word of honor, engagement. So take your pick of how the last word translates. Hope this helps! Bev in St. Louis

    3. Here is some information that I received a long time ago from a lady here in Texas. It was from the library at Anniston, AL. and came from an article or book called Whitaker Wanderings. This is not my line, but I thought it might help someone researching the Tennessee Whitakers. John Whitaker, Jr. was b. c. 1760-1770 in N.C. He died c.1830-1840. Married three times (1) Unknown (2) Winnie ?(3) Susan Graham. He had nineteen or more children. By his first wife, name unknown he had seven children: Nat, Jack, John, Crissie, Tissie, Prissie, and unknown child. By his second wife -Winnie - unknown children by his third wife- Susan Graham he had twelve children: Nancie (m. a Craig), Polly, Tempie (m. John Guffie), Winnie, Sallie, Betsy, John, Nat, Simon (m.a Tate), William, James, and Elijah. John Whitaker III was born 1784 in Pitt Co., N.C. John Whitaker, Jr. and 2nd wife Winnie sold land in Pitt Co. in 1801 and moved to Rowan Co. N.C. to be near relatives. Winnie died and he married Susan Graham. Mahala Whitaker Farmer said: "John Jr. left N.C. after 1800 and moved to Standing Stone, Putnam Co., Tennessee. Jonathan III settled there and reared a large family. John, Jr., his father, lived there two years and moved on to Madison Co. Alabama. Son William Whitaker (1810-1885) (eldest child of John Whitaker Jr. and Susan Graham) married Elizabeth Stapler (1814-1886) He was called "Uncle Billy" and lived all his life at Nebo Mt. east of New Hope AL. Children of William Whitaker and Elizabeth Stapler were" (1) Celina b. 1831 (2) Johnny 1832-1834 (3) William 1834-1852 (4) James 1835-1852 (5) Elizabeth 1837-1844 (6) Mahala 1840 (7) Nathan 1840 (twins) (8) Joseph S. 1842 (9) Elijah 1843 (10) Robert (1845) (11) Harriet 1846-1848 (12) Susan 1847-1848 (13) Nancy 1848-c. 1898 (14) David Riley 1856 (15) Sarah 1856 (twins) Hope this helps someone. Let me know if you have this line. Joan

    1. Whittaker Ancestors in England
    2. Hello All ! Nice to see some activity on this list. I am still searching for ancient Whitaker/Whittaker/Whitacre families. I am descended from Cornwallis Whitacre of the estate of High Whitacre, near Padiham. The Whitacres of High Whitacre were found there in the 15th century when Corwallis Whitacre married the heiress of the Cradock family. Their son Richard had a son, Thomas, who married the heiress of the Taylor family. Richard also had son and heir, Lawrence, died around 1518, and a third son, Henry inherited High Whitacre. I am descended from the inheriting ancestor, Henry, who with his wife Isobel had a son and heir Lawrence Whitacre who died in 1582. Are any of you "Whittaker Cousins" researching the ancient English lines? Karen Whittaker Houston Texas
