WHITAKER-rooters: I am looking for information on William WHITAKER before he and his brother, James, migrated to the Camden, South Carolina, are about 1772. I've read that the WHITAKER brothers were from Virginia. Also, that William WHITAKER's wife was Mary (or Sarah) LENOIR. William WHITTAKER had two daughters, Elizabeth and Mary WHITAKER, who were the wives of Burwell BOYKIN. (Elizabeth was Buwell's first wife). Burwell's and Elizabeth's son, Burwell BOYKIN, my grt-grt-grt-grt-grt-grandfather. was born in 1787. I do not know when Elizabeth BOYKIN was born, but she could have been old enough to have been born in Virginia. So, not only the WHITAKERS, but possibly the LENOIRS, would have hailed from Virginia. I am looking for the date and place of birth of William (and possibly James) WHITAKER, and information on their family. (any LENOIR information would be appreciated, too. ) Thank you for any help, Kelly Paul Graham, <[email protected]>

I was going through some old emails (Nov 23 1997) and found mention of "Whitaker Lines". Is this a newsletter? Can you tell me something about it or how to get it? If not, are there some monthly or quarterly newsletters out there for Whitaker/Whittaker's? Either for the U.S. or England or both? :-) Linda Whittaker Knott [email protected] http://www.geocities.com/heartland/prairie/5868 England (Lincs, Notts, Dorset)WHITAKER,PINDER,PICKWORTH,KNOTT U.S.:WHITTAKER,LOVE,WEST,CHAPIN,MALOTT,COMSTOCK,ELLIS,FERGUSON KNOTT,GOODWIN,AVERY,CLARK,EVANS,MOCK,ROCHFORD,ALVEY ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

I want to thank the list for the quick replies regarding the Crest. I have forwarded all the replies on to Denise and I'm sure her son will have plenty for his school project. I have also learned much about the Crest with this query and I thank you for that! :-) Linda Whittaker Knott [email protected] http://www.geocities.com/heartland/prairie/5868 England (Lincs, Notts, Dorset)WHITAKER,PINDER,PICKWORTH,KNOTT U.S.:WHITTAKER,LOVE,WEST,CHAPIN,MALOTT,COMSTOCK,ELLIS,FERGUSON KNOTT,GOODWIN,AVERY,CLARK,EVANS,MOCK,ROCHFORD,ALVEY ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
Linda, There were several Whitaker family crests for different branches of the Whitaker family. As I understand it the College of Arms only allowed one to use a crest if they were a first born son of the man granted the crest. The crest in the Jonathan Whitaker I. line was a shield with three diamonds and a white horse atop with the motto "Faith Conquers, Truth Retains". There is another crest with a helmet atop, and I believe one with a hand holding a sword. It is not permissable to use a particular crest unless you can prove direct descent. You can find pictures of the some Whitaker crests at http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Park/3741/genhopg1.html Joan Whitaker Landrum -----Original Message----- From: Linda Knott <[email protected]> To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Date: Monday, February 08, 1999 5:22 PM Subject: Re: WHITAKER Crest >I received an email today asking if I knew of a Whittaker Crest. I am researching William Heslit WHITAKER, who was born in the Danville PA area ca 1806. His father reportedly was William WHITAKER, a tailor. William Heslit married Mary Deborah SKAATS in New Orleans in 1829 and apparently remained there until the early 1840s, when the family moved to Mobile AL. He apparently became a physician there ca 1844, and died there in 1870. I have also received some information indicating that either William may have had other relatives (cousins or brothers) that also moved south. I would like to confirm whether some of these went to New Orleans. There appears to be another Whitaker line there during the same era, some of whom have almost identical names to some of my relatives. Is anyone on the list researching these Whitakers? Thanks, Dave
I am looking for anyone doing research on any Whitaker families in Harford Co., MD... Sincerely, Christopher T. Smithson

The title of book: "Whitaker's of Holme, Lancashire, England" by Judge Melvin Whitaker. Glenda and Sallie ask where it can be bought, not knowing that I suggested that they can obtain the book on film from the LDS. Does this answer your question? Dick Wilson
