>From Morton's History of Preston County, VA/WV On p. 403: "John Whetsell with wife and eight or nine children arrived from Hagerstown in 1806 and purchased of the Butlers 216 acres in what has long been known as the Whetsell Settlement. His house stood near the barn of Felix A. Jeffers. The last years of the parents were spent with their son Conrad in Maryland. The Preston connection is derived from their sons, Peter and Michael. Long before the Revolution two Wetzels arrived at Philadelphia. One of these settled in frederick county, Md, while the other passed on to what is now Rockingham county, Va., The famous Lewis Wetzel was a grandson. The name still exists in Rockingham and Pendleton." Marc Whetsel
