There is a Greenwood Co and a Greenwood town in SC, but prior to 1897 the present Greenwood Co was called Abbeyville and Edgefield Co. My census index shows...... In 1840 in Edgefield Co, p. 117 there was an ABNER Whaley. In 1840 Abbeyville Co p. 48 there was a LEWIS Whaley. In 1850 Abbeyville Co, Saluda R. p. 128 there was a LARVIS Whaley (Lewis?) In 1860 Abbeyville Co, Greenwood, p. 51 there was an ELIZA Whaley. In 1860 Abbeyville Co, Greenwood, p. 53, there was a D.A. Whaley. Also, in 1860 in Colleton Co, Edisto Island, there was a John C. Calhoun Whaley. Colleton Co is an eastern Co while the others are western. John Calhoun would be c. age 15 in 1850 and would probably still be in his parents' home and he might be his own head of house at age c. 25 in 1860. He went to TX prior to 1862 as his first child was b. there. (Notice that he has children named Lewis and Elizabeth) I will not be able to check on the exact listing for the above census records for some time, but I was wondering if GEORGE WHALEY our listowner could help us out. Maybe John Calhoun can be found in one of the census records given above. ******************* John Calhoun's 8/19/1899 pension papers say his address then was PO Lancaster, Dallas Co TX. Did he die there? I cannot find Lancaster. Did his death certificate tell where he was buried? If you could find the cemetery, perhaps some of the stones there might solve the birthdate problems we have with some of the children. In 1900 Amanda stated she was the mother of 10 children and 2 were deceased. We have only 9 children unless there actually were 2 named Edward P. Which 2 were deceased by 1900? Perhaps cemetery records would help. The Edward P. birth and death date given you by a descendant pose another problem. If he were b 6-25-1887, how could his sister Lillie Frances be b 3- -1887? And we have the same problem with the other Edward P. birthdate and that of his brother William F. being born 4 months apart.
