Carolyn, Spelling comes from: 1790 Iredell County Census - 393-22 John Whealey, 393-29 Joseph Whealey Sr., and 393-33 Joseph Whealey Jr. Rowan Deeds 11:372. 9 Aug. 1787. State Grant #1517 @ 50 sh the 100 A to Joseph Whelley/Whealey, 300 A betw Buffalo Shoal Crk and "that on which Moses Nesbet lives" adj Samuel Hustin. Rowan County Deeds 11:190. 9 Oct. 1787. State Grant #1618 @ 50 sh the 100 A to James Houston, 100 A on Buffalo Shoal Crk on the Branch Known as the Broad Meadow Branch adj Joseph Whealy & one McCay's claim and the Widow Thomas. From what I can ascertain from looking at old maps of that area the Josephs were just on the north side of the Catawba River. As an aside here which I find interesting is that Henrietta Whaley of Kent Co MD (her supposed father was Richard Whaley; according to Guy Wallis there are no probate records for Richard Whaley in Kent Co. MD). Henrietta married a Nicholas Massey of Kent Co MD - the Masseys are also on the 1790 census however by this time Henrietta had passed on - believe they lived in the Shiloh Township area with land on the north side of the Catawba River and are buried there at a church cemetery the name of which is in a pile of notes here? Also a Celia Whaley was m. in 1782 to William Woodside and that household is listed next to Joseph Whealey Jr. in the 1790 census. A person could guess that Celia was the daughter of Joseph Sr. from his first wife (my missing 6g-grandmother) but I won't. There are many Whaleys there in Rowan/Iredell Co. - would be interesting to find the family connections. Thank you again Carolyn - sorry 'bout that digressing. -Margaret ----Original Message Follows---- From: Carolyn Vosburg <lynvos@sbcglobal.net> Reply-To: WHALEY-L@rootsweb.com To: WHALEY-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [WSP] Joseph Whaley/Whealey of Iredell Co, NC Date: Tue, 4 Jul 2006 23:34:25 -0500 Margaret, One more question: Where did you run into the Whealey spelling of Joseph's name? That's the only other time I've seen that spelling variation other than in the marriage record of MY James Whaley/Whealey in Virginia! C. I've never paid too close attention to the spelling of names. Some of my Dad's brothers use Burnette and some use Burnett. Some spell their mother's maiden name Fogel and some spell it Fogle. Other than making for some difficult times at the funeral homes it's never seemed to make much difference. I did find it interesting though...... My husband and I visited Whalley, England a few years ago. I had met someone over the internet and arranged to have her meet us at the train station. We never turned around as she ran along behind us calling, "Wally, Wally? Are you Wally?" It had never occurred to me that the pronunciation would be different there. i.e. Wall ee instead of Whale ee Connie Whaley ________________________________________________________________________ Check out AOL.com today.
