    3. Margaret, One more question: Where did you run into the Whealey spelling of Joseph's name? That's the only other time I've seen that spelling variation other than in the marriage record of MY James Whaley/Whealey in Virginia! C. I know I don't have to tell you, Carolyn, but... we must be careful to not put too much stock in name spellings. "Correct" spelling, or expecting consistency in spelling, is a modern invention! No, seriously, there were relatively few really well-educated people back 2 and 300 years ago, most especially among those who acted as scribes - public figures who initiated records and entered names in public records of any kind. Unfortunately, this includes the parents of the child, the clergy generating records, the various government agencies... the list goes on and on. When a mother names her child, she might have a clear understanding of how that name is traditionally, or how she wants it to be spelled, but does she check any of the records and make correction if she finds an error? Look at all the functionally illiterate people we have among us in *this* enlightened age! It's scary how many there are - somehow managing to hold jobs, but I'd be willing to bet that they don't hold accurate spelling among their more important skills... In parts of England, as I have come to understand it, the double L spelling of Whalley was considered an interchangeable exercise, done on a whim... Members of the same family took it upon themselves to drop an L and from then on become known as Whaley. Or vise versa. Just because they wanted to! The uncertainty of technically (?) and traditionally correct spelling of family given and surnames ought to be part of Genealogy 101... Sometimes how a name is spelled gives one an important clue, as that to which Carolyn alludes... I'd venture that just as often it is misleading, and one should not put too much stock in it. In my humble opinion. <g> keith whaley

    3.
