Carolyn- I can't vouch for the Hitchinbrooke birth location, but I absolutely stand by the information I submitted concerning the various Richards. Perhaps someone else may have documentation on Hitchinbrooke. Carolyn, I think the Hinchingbrooke reference for the birth of this Richard Whalley is just a mistake. Bob, I wonder if it is possible to give us a reference which might enable us to obtain a copy of these anecdotes of Geoffrey Jaggar? The genealogy you give, tracing the Regicide's line back to Richard Whalley who married Elizabeth Leak, is identical to that given in the 1787 book by Rev. Mark Noble 'Memoirs of the Protectoral House of Cromwell'. As well as some details (though not including some of the ones which you give) of the rise, fall, and re-rise of this Richard Whalley, Noble gives information on other family members, including Penistone Whalley, the Regicide's cousin, who seems to have inherited and squandered most of what remained of the family fortune. He then goes on to describe the regicide's military career, and the escapades of him and his son-in-law William Goffe as they evaded capture in the American Colonies. Interestingly, if Edward had a brother called Robert, Mark Noble never knew anything about him. I have a Word file which contains a transcription of all the references to Edward Whalley and William Goffe in Mark Noble's book. It runs to 12 A4 pages. If anyone would like a copy, just e-mail me off list and I will send it as an attachment. I feel sure I've done this before, but it must be several years ago and there may be new list members who would be interested.
