    1. Theophilus (VA/RI, 1616-1720) Date Question (14 Feb 1719/20)

    3. Greetings- Does anyone know the original source for the IGI record indicating the death of Theophilus Whaley occurred on 14 Feb 1719/20? Although the year is consistent with observations of people who were at the funeral and who remembered various things about Theophilus, I am suspicious of the basis for that date, because this same IGI record lists a marriage date (7 February 1665/66) for Theophilus and Elizabeth, which Jackie Weeden noticed was an exact match to a document transferring a cow from John Mills to his daughter Elizabeth Mills. Although a published article refers to this document as the will of John Mills (see G. Andrews Moriarty, "Theophilus Whaley of Virginia and Rhode Island", The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography 66:76-79 (1958)), I have transcribed the original document below, and it is clearly not a will, but rather a property transfer, perhaps a marriage gift, perhaps not. When I asked about this document, the county clerk did point out to me that many documents other than wills were recorded in the Old Rappahannock County Wills books. Therefore, since the marriage date posted to the IGI seems to be based on something (although I think the deduction of a marriage date goes too far), it makes me wonder where the submitter got the death date from. Thanks for any help. -Bob Hart '^' precedes letters written as superscripts.
