Growing up, I always considered my Whaley name an oddity because I just never found anyone else with this name. In the last 5 years, I have been SHOCKED by the sheer numbers of Whaleys out there! It is just wonderful to be discovering the somewhat "sorted" past of my ancestors. Isn't it fun!?! I have been a list member for some time and have been watching for clues. The other day I saw something exciting and a link to my known ancestors. (Newton Price Whaley) It was the spur I needed to get my info together. I would like to find his parents, missing dates, places, etc. As a sideline: I had an aunt that was in Williamsburg years ago and wandered into a little church there. In it she noticed a plague on the "pew door" that was inscribed with the name "James Elijah." It was a couple of rows behind the doors that were inscribed with "Thomas Jefferson" on one side of the isle and "George Washington" on the other. My aunt is gone now and I do not remember the name of the church. Does anyone know anything about THAT James Elijah.(It is obviously a family name!) In the cemetary there, she found a headstone for a child that said is was the "Only son of James Elijah." She did not get any pictures and I have no dates. Perhaps this James had another son after this one died?? Unfortunately, she did not have time to do any research on this branch of the Whaleys. Thanks to all who help in this project.
