    3. My name is Michael Whaley. I am a direct descendant of the original SC Whaley's and have been asked to head up the Whaley Family DNA Project. My family lore says we came from the Edisto SC Whaley's, who have proof of their lineage back to Edward Wale of MD. I was hoping to find a contact person for the TN Whaley's that can point me in the direction of a male descendant of Alexander b.1748 or William M. b.1788 who is willing to have a 37 marker DNA test. I have a male Whaley from Edisto SC willing to test their DNA. I have had a DNA test done. My results are posted on worldfamilies.net/surnames/w/whaley . The reason I find all this fascinating is our family names are so unique to the Whaley's in TN, SC and MD. William, Middleton, Thomas, George and John all run through our families. Common names, however, I had a great uncle named Atticus Alonzo and Alexander (TN) name his son William Alonzo. The birth date of Alexander or John Alexander is comparable to that of my oldest ancestor John Whaley b. ca 1750? SC who fathered George P.Whaley Sr b. ca.1775 in SC. My guess is they were brothers or Alexander was John. John is listed on the 1790 census in SC but not on the 1800 census. Also John is listed as having 2 sons and 3 daughters under 16 on the 1790 census but George P. Whaley Sr. is the only ancestor for which we have records. He is listed on the 1800 SC census. Another interesting fact; William M. Whaley b 1801 in SC was the first son of George Powell Sr. William's son, William A. Whaley b. 1833 went to TN and died there. DNA testing will provide scientific data and either coroborate or eliminate these family legends. I hope we can at least resolve the TN, SC, MD connection.
