    1. Re: [WHALEY] Messages from 1998 re Alexander and Leverich
    2. Mike
    3. My name is Michael Whaley. I am a direct descendant of the original SC Whaley's and have been asked to head up the Whaley Family DNA Project. My family lore says we came from the Edisto SC Whaley's, who have proof of their lineage back to Edward Wale of MD. I was hoping to find a contact person for the TN Whaley's that can point me in the direction of a male descendant of Alexander b.1748 or William M. b.1788 who is willing to have a 37 marker DNA test. I have a male Whaley from Edisto SC willing to test their DNA. I have had a DNA test done. My results are posted on worldfamilies.net/surnames/w/whaley . The reason I find all this fascinating is our family names are so unique to the Whaley's in TN, SC and MD. William, Middleton, Thomas, George and John all run through our families. Common names, however, I had a great uncle named Atticus Alonzo and Alexander (TN) name his son William Alonzo. The birth date of Alexander or John Alexander is comparable to that of my oldest ancestor John Whaley b. ca 1750? SC who fathered George P.Whaley Sr b. ca.1775 in SC. My guess is they were brothers or Alexander was John. John is listed on the 1790 census in SC but not on the 1800 census. Also John is listed as having 2 sons and 3 daughters under 16 on the 1790 census but George P. Whaley Sr. is the only ancestor for which we have records. He is listed on the 1800 SC census. Another interesting fact; William M. Whaley b 1801 in SC was the first son of George Powell Sr. William's son, William A. Whaley b. 1833 went to TN and died there. DNA testing will provide scientific data and either coroborate or eliminate these family legends. I hope we can at least resolve the TN, SC, MD connection. 1. [WHALEY] Messages from 1998 re Alexander and Leverich
    2. Here are some messages from the 1998 Digest, #54 Maybe it will shed some light on where the confusion began. _____________________________________________ Whaley Digest V98 #54 1 Apr 1998 Msg. #1-Alexander and Abigail Leverich--From Weeden's notes " I recently received an alphabetical list of WSP Members with their ancestral data from Lyn and also an alphabetical list of Oldest Ancestors with a list of the descendants of each from George. I noticed that some of the TN Whaleys list Alexander Whaley and Abigail Leverich as the parents of Middleton Whaley or William M. Whaley. In David L. Beckwith's note to Deb Mayes in June 1997 he tells her that there is no connection between their Middleton Whaley and Alexander and Abigail. I agree and am puzzled as to the source for the TN Whaley descendants using this connection. It it in "Smoky Mountain Clans" by Donald B. Reagan or where? Alexander was b in CT and Abigail in NY and their 9 children William L., David, James, Elizabeth, Sarah L., John, Francis, Thomas and Alexander were all born in NY between 1774 and 1791. Alexander died in NY. Data on this family will be found in Rev. Samuel Whaley's book "The Whaley Family" and also "The Whaley House" and "Consignments to El Dorado" by June A. Reading. Alexander is mentioned in the DAR Patriot Index showing his Revolutionary War service from NY. #143264 material entered by descendant Clara Heiss Brandenburg notes that Alexander was a member of the Boston Tea Party and assisted in throwing the tea overboard!! The Abstract of his Will located by Suejp and his obituary verify the family data given above. For what it is worth, there was also an Alexander Whaley born between 1790 and 1800 in TN or SC. He served in the War of 1812 from TN and married Ruth McAnally 9-10-1812 in Roane Co TN. They moved to Blount Co AL. Alexander left his famiy in AL and moved to Poinsett Co AR. In 1850 he was listed there with a 36 year old Margaret and 6 children born between c. 1834 and 1850. The oldest of these children of his second family was named Middleton B. There seems to be some similarities here. There are also several WSPers listed under this Alexander who married Ruth McAnally. Someone has asked where the name Middleton comes from. As I recall, Edward the Regicide married Mary Middleton as his second wife." JW _________________________ Msg #2 Apr 1998 Alexander Whaley & Abigail Leverich--David L. Beckwith The source of the connection with the Sevier County TN Whaleys was "Sevier County, Tennessee and its Heritage" 1994, p. 200 submitted by Aileen Whaley Fowler. I then included this in my web page (http://www.smokykin.com/) After other evidence tended to disprove the connection, I personally phoned Mrs. Fowler. She gave as her source stories her grandfather (George Bradford Whaley 1838-1914) told her. In an attempt to explain the connection between the New York Whaley she said this Alexander traveled extensively as part of his occupation. She said her grandfather said they descended from the Regicide. She said our proven progenitor (William M. Whaley 1786-1880) had a brother named Middleton after the regicide's mother's maiden name. Mrs. Fowler was passionately offended by those who doubted her story and I feel uncomfortable sharing this as she did confide what she knew to me. The Middleton connection may have some credence, but she was unable to give me enough evidence that I feel indicate a connection to this Alexander. I think her grandfather did tell her stories on her ancestrry; unfortunately, I am unable to corroborate his stories with any facts. In fact, most facts tend to disprove the connection. I even have doubts that William M. Whaley's father is named Alexander. I can't find any primary source indicating his name. One researcher indicates it may be John Alexander Whaley, however, I have not seen her sources. The only evidence I have on his parents are the 1850 mortality list which lists their birth place as South Carolina. Does anyone have any evidence to share here? The Alabama Alexander you mention is too young to be the Sevier County, TN ancestor since he was born after William M. Whaley. The Middleton son tends to indicate a connection could be possible. I've been a little lazy at not notifying Lyn and George to change my progenitor to William M. and Mary (Ogle) Whaley. Does anyone else have anything to add? David L. 1. [WHALEY] RE William M. Whaley and Mary Ann Ogle
    2. To Ruby-- We just talked on the phone about the repeat of the incorrect belief that William M. Whaley (wife, Mary Ann Ogle) of SC and TN was a son of the Alexander Whaley of Kings Co. NY. The Whaley Search Party had several entries regarding this same error in Digests in 1997, 1998 and 1999. In Digest 1998, issue 54, there were several entires by Ruby and Jackie, Carolyn Vosburg, David Beckwith and George Whaley and all seemed to be quite informative on the subject. Alexander Whaley of NY was not called John Alexander in any of the public records that I searched. Nor was he ever called John Alexander in any of the published books in which the family is mentioned. It was just Alexander Whaley!! All fourteen of his children were born in NY. He did have a son named William L. who was born in 1774 in Kings Co. NY. Apparently William M. Whaley (wife, Mary Ann Ogle) was born 1788 SC. Alexander Whaley lived his entire life in NY and died there in 1833. His will would definitely seem to eliminate the William M. Whaley of SC as being related to him. William M. Whaley and his family are mentioned in the book, 'Smoky Mountain Clan'. by Donald B. Reagan. There are also some WSP members who are listed on the Oldest Ancestor List under both Alexander Whaley (m. Abigail Leverich) and William M. Whaley (m. Mary Ann Ogle). So, it would seem that the listing would need to be under one or the other,--not both. Jackie I have located the Digest 54 from 1998 that Jackie mentions--if I get time I will copy the pertinent parts and send them to the group. rlnsd

    2. SHARON STERLE
    3. Please include me in Whaley lists and compiling of Whaley records. My oldest Whaley is known to be great great grandfather Samuel Whaley b. c. 1794-1798 (possibly Aug. 21, 1797) in N.Y. or Vt. He died between 1870 and 1875, N.Y. Samuel Whaley was married to Amantha Malvina Williams, b. c. 1813, Herkimer Co., N.Y., d. after 1875. It is theorized his father was Samuel Whaley b. May 19, 1773, R.I. I know I will need to put in more research to hopefully obtain more definite facts to fill in names and dates. I have various records of the family members and the surname has varied between Whaley, Whalley and Whelay. But that's another topic. Sharon, Mn.

    3. Actually, this is a question and tip: I ran across "Owhaley" somehow, and I wonder if any of "our" Whaleys would be found with that name? It is limited, but probably a possibility. Also, Genealogy Today has some helpful links geared to surnames. I've copied below what they have on Whaley, and here's the link. This is probably "old news" to most of you, but it might help someone. http://www.genealogytoday.com/surname/finder.mv?Surname=whaley At this site you can also search for the Owhaley page.
