    3. Tis the season to be with family, celebrate or create traditions unique to your family. For those of you who've added members to your family this year by birth, marriage or discovery - congratulations. For those of you who've lost members for whatever reason, my condolences. Some traditions pass as do the generations, while others are continued or created. For my family I remember my father speaking of his childhood in central New York in the 1930s, where on Christmas Eve his father would go out, find, cut down, a tree for Christmas. Brought back home it was decorated with among other things candles, which were lit at some point. For myself, the last few years when we've gone to Minnesota for the holiday, usually after lunch on Christmas day, we've walked down the middle of the local river for a mile or more, seeing the tracks left by the various creatures in the snow on the river and river banks. Sometimes we see pheasant and once I saw a snowy owl. To celebrate the season I'm passing along the URL of a site I created last year, of vintage Christmas cards from my personal family collection. http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ga/state1/cards/chrstmas.htm Merry Christmas to you all, Tim

    2. Ruby, I knew you would jump in with the correct information. I hang my head in shame that I am decidedly rusty on my Whaley and Pepper research but that message just didn't ring true. I did remember you saying that no RW service records for our William had been found. Knowing how strongly you felt and how hard you had resarched that subject, I had to speak up. As for the Pepper information, it differs in places from what I have but I haven't done any current research. My information was based a lot on those estate papers listing the distributees after Hester died sometime after 1860. I need to (or someone needs to) go to the courthouse in Monroe in Walton County and look up those estate records --- the entire estate settlement including inventory, sales, accounting, distribution, who posted bond, annual returns, etc. A lot of answers probably can be found there. I'm sure all of us are curious as to the nature of the mulatto children in the census --- are they related or were they slaves who were very well taken care of? If they are relatives, whose children are they? Nobody seems to be able to figure that one out. I am calling Hester's name "Hester" based on the fact that the name carried down in the Fowler family for two more generations. Elizabeth Pepper Fowler had a daughter named Hester and Zephaniah Fowler (son of Elizabeth) and his wife, Lucy Ann Norris, had a daughter named Hester. The fact that the census taker wrote "Hessa" or "Hessey" just means that's what he heard. I don't believe the Pepper family was literate. No big deal. It wasn't important back then. Of the Pepper children given by Mr. Frakes, I do not have Sunsberry, William or Henry as children of John and Hester, although I believe Carolyn Kemp and her husband did ascertain that Sunsberry was a son. They had a letter in which the reference to Sunsberry would make him a son (he was somebody's uncle or something which put him in the right slot). Carolyn, if you're on this list and can clarify that, please do. Also I do not have a second marriage for Parker Pepper, son of John and Hester. Not that I'm right, I just don't have that information. Also, I am VERY curious as to how Mr. Frakes is descended from three of the Whaley girls. Related I can understand, but descended? Wow! That really takes some intermarrying. I hope he will explain that to us. If I find any more information, I will post it to the list, but I just wanted Ruby to know I heard her loud and clear. Hope her medication is working. :-) Judy K in Newnan, GA

    1. [WHALEY] Apoplexy!
    2. This is Ruby, correctly diagnosed by Judy--I need to know what the medication is for my illness and dosages required. The WHALEY BOOK that was mentioned certainly is not the one with all the GA Whaley research by Jackie Weeden, Whaley genealogist! We have no record of where and when William was born. Our book does not say William married a ROUND! but instead she was NEE Bruton, Brewton, Broughton, Brewton (various spellings.) We have documents that prove her maiden name. William was never referred to as William J. or William Jr. He was just plain WILLIAM. He was not in the War--there is NO record of his serving. We have tried to find any record. He and Hannah were in GA raising their large family. I have not had time to check the data on their children that is given by Stephen. And I hope Judy is checking the accuracy of the Pepper line he gives. I am not over my pique about the misinformation about Alexander and Leverich that is out there and now this!! How can I get ready for Christmas with all this going on???? More later. Judy, thanks, and please help! Ruby Nelson for Jackie Weeden Our book "The Early Georgia Whaleys" gives much info about this family. It is still available. rlnsd@aol.com

    2. Beverly Graham
    3. Most of you Whaley resesarchers are going back into ancient (to me) generations, and I've still never proved the identity of my great-grandfather. 'Tain't FAIR!! I have some first cousins (I'm copying this to them) who are also interested, and some of us are interested in the DNA project in hopes it can identify which line we're from. So, pardon the long message, but every so often in my research I like to put the message out again, to see if anyone else has found something that connects. Here it is: My grandfather was Jesse Monroe Whaley, born in the fall of either 1877 or 1878, according to oral history in Searcy County, Ark. His mother was Mary J. Renfro (her name in 1880 on the census in Van Buren County, where Jesse is listed as age 2). On her deathbed about 5 years later, Mary told Jesse that he had a brother (Tom?) and that Jesse's father was a Will Whaley. There is a possibility that Jesse had those two names reversed but we are fairly certain the father was Will. I've found no record of a marriage between a Mary Renfro and Will Whaley. Later in 1880, after the census, she married W. Henfry Gordon, which we know from family lore as well as a copy of the marriage license in Van Buren County. Other counties associated with Jesse and family in Arkansas: Yell, Perry, Faulkner, White, Woodruff. There is Indian blood descending through Jesse, Cherokee we think, and (we think) through his mother Mary Renfro. In later life, Jesse and family moved to Oklahoma, 1919, and he died in 1924. He had a half brother George Gordon. You will note that Jesse's middle name was Monroe (or Jess Monrow as written on hia WW I draft registration); he included Monroe in a son's name. I only mention this because there were some Whaleys in Arkansas who used the name Monroe several times. I do have a theory about Jesse's parentage, as follows: The theory concerns the Peyton Greene Whaley family, on the 1880 census in Hempstead County, Ark., whose 25 year old son William lived nearby, single, head of household, with younger brother F. M. Whaley (Francis Marion), and another single male. As noted, Jesse had a brother named Tom, and in looking at the Hempstead census, I find there was a 4 year old (black) Thomas Parker in the Peyton Greene household. I have suspected that our Will got Mary Renfro pregnant, and that she went away to have the baby in another county. That was common even in my lifetime (I was born in 1951), since it was such a scandal for an unmarried girl to have a baby. So in my scenario, about 1877 she became pregnant and went away but already knew of a child named Tom (the Parker boy, in my scenario) by another mother. It builds a bit of a picture. Peyton Greene Whaley had several farm laborers, in addition to a housemaid, which may indicate a comfortable life, perhaps wealth. Then you have three single men ages 25, 23, and 21 living together...an ideal setup for a guy with less-than-honorable intentions toward vulnerable women. Hempstead County is in SW Arkansas, while Searcy Co is north of Little Rock--a suitable distance in that era for sending away a young girl "in disgrace" and there were Renfros in both counties. The Will Whaley in this story later morried someone else and probably was never married to Mary J. Renfro, who died before the age of 30 (about 1885). This is the closest thing I've found, and I think there's a chance that it's roughly accurate. What do you think of my scenario?? Any connections? Just curious. By the way, in my suggestion of Will Whaley fathering illegitimate children, I intend no offense to anyone related to the Peyton line; these things happen, then and now. It's just become less socially sensitive than it would have been then...and I MAY not be right! Beverly Graham, Bethany, OK

    3. Lynn (or anyone on the list), Have you by any chance found anything else out on the Gibson/Gipson-Whaley connection? I was just reminded after seeing the Middleton name, the Gibson family in SC also married into the Middleton family. I sure wish we could find how the Gibson and Whaleys are related.
