    1. Henry A. Whaley and Amanda McMillan--
    2. To Joy Woods and Nita Irvine---and other WSPers. Jackie Weeden has been working with Joy and Nita because they both descend from John and Mary Airheart. One of John's sons is Henry A. who married Amanda McMillan. Nita is in a panic because someone has now told her that Henry A. is the son of William M. of Sevier Co TN, who had wife Mary Ogle! I looked in the Smoky Mountain Web and yes, there it is-- Alexander Whaley and Abigail Leverich parents of Wm. M. and wife Ogle! Wm M. and Mary Ogle parents of Henry A. and wife McMillan! So that makes two mistakes regarding William M. His father was not the Alexander who mar Leverich, and he is not the father of a Henry A. According to Donald Reagan's book "Smoky Mountain Clan, Volume III" William M. had 15 children and not one was named Henry A.! Henry A. was b in Rhea Co TN in 1826 and mar Amanda in Knox Co TN 1849 and they DID live in Sevier Co TN according to the 1850 Co census. He was in Cooke Co TX in 1860 living with his brother Hercules. (Henry A. had a grandfather named Hercules, a brother named Hercules and a son named Hercules.) He and Amanda ended up in Cooke Co and Clay Co TX in 1880. There must be some way to delete erroneous material from a web. It really causes trouble with researchers who are trying to follow the rules in recreating their families. Please help! rlnsd

    3. My father and I are going through Snellville Sunday, on the way home from an Atlanta Braves game, and would like to stop at the Whaley cemetery there. I understand it is south of US 78, behind 2225 Hudson Dr. Can anyone give me a broader set of directions on how to find it, traveling from Atlanta? My father's ancestors are buried there, and this is the first inkling he has of them, beyond his grandmother. Thanks for any consideration Kerry Smith

    3. We have traced our branch back to James Whaley (wife Margaret Goffe) who came from Colraine, co Londonderry, Ireland, to Plymouth Mass in about 1722 - 1724. He died shortly after arriving in the US. If anyone can go further back than that we'd be grateful. We believe him to be descended from Edward the Regicide. 2. >From Jackie Weeden to Sharron Phillips-- "I have been studying your family list in Digest 154 dated July 17. WSP members Roger Lloyd and Brian and Kristine Anderson also share this line. Perhaps they have already answered you, but if not, here is my 2 cents' worth. 1. William Whaley m Nancy Pulham, Culpeper Co VA. William was b pre 1765 according to the 1810 census, Warren Co KY. William d 1832 Washington Co MO so he could not be the father of the George who was b c. 1834, two years after William died. (I believe it was William's son John who married Cynthia___who would be your next generation.) 2. John Whaley m Cynthia____and when he d the 1850 census shows Cynthia Whaley with 8 children, one of whom was George, age 16. 3. George m Gilillah/Gilla Ann Cobb--I believe this is the George you are listing. I can't account for the spelling in the wife's name--I found it many different ways. This George mar Gilillah (Gilla Ann Cobb) 8-4-1853. George and Gilla Ann had a son James who mar Mary Elizabeth Day. George's pension application says George was b 1834. The pension application only consisted of 5 pages and had very little family info on them. They did indicate that he was born c. 1834 and they were dated in May 1892. I could not find him or his wife in 1900 so perhaps he died bet 1892 and 1900. Then, too, they could have moved. And,--maybe Roger, who has quite a lot of info on this line, can help you. 4. James Whaley m Mary Elizabeth Day, St. FRANCOIS Co MO. James was b 3- -1858 MO. James 42, and Mary E. 28 were in Jefferson Co MO in 1900 with children : Mary A. 14, Edith 6, Gertrude 4, Marvin 2, and Irvin 4/12, If all these ages are correct, it would seem that James was married before and perhaps Mary A. was from that marriage. Do you have an Family Group Sheets for George and James and Arthur that you can share with us? We have some blanks to fill in on ours. If you want to see our FGS for John and Cynthia and George and Gilla Ann we can send them to you by attachment."

    1. ST. DUNSTAN MARRIAGE RECORD
    2. Robert Whaley
    3. I have scanned the 3 pages of the pertinent information from St. Dunstan's Stepney register which shows what I believe to be the marriage record of Edward Whalley (regicide) and Judith Duffel. The 4th page is a detailed map of Nottinghamshire showing the location of Flintham parish adjacent to Screveton. The individual pages are recorded as .JPEG's for detail so are separate and too cumbersome to post to WSP. I plan to post these items to my website soon (it is currently under construction) but if anyone is interested in downloading the files, contact me offline and I will forward them to you directly. Is there anyone who can recommend an easier and/or abbreviated way to scan photo detail to a text format which is both a smaller overall file size and can be set up as a continuous page scroll. My scanner is a multifunction machine using PAGIS software. Robert Whaley

I believe it is also in the City Library of Hadley, MA and the South Carolina Historical and Genealogical Society in Charleston, SC. It has been filmed by the Latter Day Saints. 3. Group- It doesn't take much to stir things up when it comes to Edward's lineage, particularly Edward Wale vs. Edward Whalley the regicide. William Whaley's comparison, as usual, was helpful and interesting. Is Barton's book available for any of us who might be interested in getting a copy? I also would like to get the address to contact Barton's son, per William's offer. I believe that there are as yet undiscovered records for the English Whalleys/Whaleys that may help shed some light on dates and children. Published data I have seen for the English Whaley's seems to be pretty consistant on dates and children. It either means that the information given is completely accurate or that all the information on dates comes from the same root source. I tend to believe the latter. But that is why we pursue this facinating hobby, is it not? Robert Whaley

    1. The Family of Edward Whalley the Regicide
    2. I am being asked where to find a list of Edward Whalley's children. It is on pages 18 and 19 of Reverend Samuel Whaley's book. If anyone has a different list, let me know. I am trying to put the FGS for Edward Whalley online so the WSP members can see it. I have gone from double to single columns so the material doesn't jump around. (I hope an entry like this is OK with George, our listowner.) If you see anything wrong with it, let us know. Or if you can fill in the blanks, let us know. A lot of study has gone into this family as you can see by the many sources given. Notice that THEORETICAL is used in some places, along with ?. This indicates that there is no proof of that statement being true. For instance--did Edward Whalley die in MA? Did Edward Whalley's son John come to America and remarry to a Mary Radcliffe? This latter info was given by the elder Robins, who wrote the Regicide Theory, so is it also not true? Weeden and Nelson

    1. The Antique Book--again
    2. Thanks, William Whalley for identifying the source of the Antique book found by Julie. You pointed out some discrepancies in the notes written by the author of the captions. We would like to point out another discrepancy. The material in this book is based on the premise that Edward the Regicide was the ancestor of this line! The lineage on the separate piece of paper in the book states: Peter Whaley Sr., son of Seth Whaley Seth Whaley, son of Elias Whaley Elias Whaley, son of Nathaniel Whaley *Nathaniel Whaley son of Mary Middleton and Major General Edward Whaley, one of the three judges. (The Regicide) *Nathaniel Whaley was son of Edward Wale and Elizabeth Ratcliff. Edward Wale and Elizabeth Ratcliff were married in MD and their children's births are all on record there. Edward Whalley the Regicide had no son Nathaniel. In 1880 the theory that Edward Wale was indeed the Regicide was abandoned by Robert P. Robins. It was his great great grandfather Thomas Robins 3d, who started the theory that Edward Wale and Edward Whalley the Regicide were the same man. Edward Whalley had no son Nathaniel, and his children were all born in England. Edward Wale was not an educated man as the Regicide was, as he signed his 1718 will with an x. For more about the debunking of the Regicide Theory read Sue's article "Records are Remorseless as Regards Theory." It is in David Beckwith's web-- http://www.smokykin.com/whaley.htm But the Regicide theory seems to be alive and well, even in 1999, as it is such a romantic assumption!! We have Weeden's Family Group Sheets on disk for: Edward Whalley the Regicide Edward Wale and Elizabeth Ratcliffe Nathaniel Wale and Mary Dale Elias Whaley and Martha Dale Seth Whaley and Hester Baker Peter Whaley Sr. and Elizabeth Davis Peter Whaley Jr. and Ann Catherine Timmons If you are interested let us know. They can be attached and sent to you. Weeden and Nelson

    3. Regarding the Whaley photo album and written materials found in Nevada by Julie. The photographs are of a family contained in William Baynard Barton's book, "A LIMITED GENEALOGY STUDY OF DESCENDANTS OF MAJ. GEN. EDWARD WHALLEY (The Regicide).", Stonega, Va. 1956. Old Captain Peter Whaley was Peter Whaley, Sr. (4G63, Barton's I.D. number), b. 1779, d 1860. He married Elizabeth Brevard Davis and had these children (from chart on page 128 of Barton's book.) 5G64. Peter Whaley Jr. (1830-1906), m. Anna Catherine Davis 5G65. Edward Thomas Whaley, m. Mary Catherine Jones 5G66. Mariah Catherine Whaley, m. Zadek Purnell 5G67. Seth Mitchell Whaley, m1 Mary Ann Munford, 9 ch., m2 Rittie Taylor, 2 ch., m3 Rhoda Isabell Hamblin, 5 ch. 5G68. James Whaley, m. Elvira Green, 1 ch. 5G69. Mary Elizabeth Whaley, m. John Spence Timmons, 8 ch. 5G70. Hester Sariah Whaley, m1 John Burton Rider, m2 Dr. J.P.R. Gillis. "Seth Mitchell Whaley, (5G67) was in the lumber business in Whaleyville, Maryland, and later moved the business to Whaleyville, Virginia, which town began as a lumber center, and is still a Virginia town" (quote from page 129.) There are some differences in names and dates, but clearly this family is the same as those described in the picture captions. One would assume that the caption author was a member of this family. The hand-written lineage contains some dates that are not in Barton's book. The author was apparently close to a person named Eva who the author describes as Mary Elizabeth Whaley's granddaughter. Barton does not delineate Mary Elizabeth Whaley's family other than to say she had 8 children. Barton does cite records from a family bible, i.e. "A short resume of this ancestorial origin [of the Whalley/Whaley family] in England is copied from the Family Bible of Mrs. Evelyn Kate Whaley Phillips, whose son now lives in Hardeeville, S. C., and whose father is Seth Mitchell Whaley, formerly of Whaleyville, Maryland, and Whaleyville, Virginia. This Seth Whaley is buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Suffolk, Virginia." Barton also spells "Evelyn" as "Evalyn" sometimes, so the Eva could be Evelyn Kate Whaley Phillips and her family bible could have been the source of the information. Another possibility is an Eva Whaley who is described as a cousin of Estelle Stella Whaley, Dr. Barton's mother. Grace Whaley, the diary author, may have been Dr. Barton's aunt, Estelle Stella Whaley's sister. I'm not quite sure what to make of her diary entries. Colchester, Essex, in southeast England, is a long way from the village of Whalley, Lancashire or from the village of Whaley Bridge, Derbyshire. It would not surprise me if King Charles I had blown up some Whalley real estate during the English civil war, but a Colchester Castle web site gives a slightly different story. "In 1629 the castle was sold by the crown and in 1683 came into the possession of John Wheeley, a local ironmonger. Wheeley partly demolished the castle and sold the stone to local builders. Fortunately this did not prove to be profitable and he stopped before the castle was totally destroyed." http://www.camelotintl.com/heritage/colche.html ) The connection between the Peter Whaley family in the pictures and Dr. W. B. Barton seems to be a distant one, but perhaps the families kept in touch. If you are interested in tracing any connection and possibly finding contemporary family members, I can give you the address of Dr. Barton's son. William Whalley Camas, WA, USA

Without getting in to the content of this book or it's authenticity, I expect there will be a great deal of interest in this journal. I am certainly VERY interested. 3. Hi everyone, Sorry the last one was so long, that's why I thought I should finish up on a new mail!! On a separate sheet of paper included in this photo album is a hand written lineage. This is what it says: Peter Whaley Sr. 1779-1860 <Eva's great-grandfather only son of Seth Whaley 1754-1823 & Hester Baker Whaley 1758-1834. **************************** Seth Whaley, son of Elias Whaley **************************** Elias Whaley, son of Nathaniel Whaley ***************************** Nathaniel Whaley son of Mary Middleton Whaley (Sister of Sir George Middleton) and Major General Edward Whaley. Known in England as Lord Whalley--one of the three judges--???? to America, about 1660. ******************************* Peter Whaley Sr. and Elizabeth Davis Whaley married Nov. 21, 1816. Children born to them (copied from Whaley Bible) James Whaley Sep. 21, 1817 Hester Ann Whaley, Oct.7, 1819 Seth Mitchell Whaley, Dec. 17, 1821 Mary Elizabeth Whaley, Feb. 8, 1824, (Eva's grandmother) Maria Catherine Whaley, July 14, 1826 Edward Thomas Whaley, May 6, 1829 Peter Whaley, 2nd, Aug. 6, 1831 ************************************** Well folks, that's all this handwritten lineage has on it. I don't know if this connects to my Whalen family or not. I don't know how it came to be in Nevada and it does not say who wrote it. Have a great one! 1. Antique Shop find!
    2. BG
    3. Hi Everyone, I had to unsub. from the list a few months ago, but I'm back, and i'm back with some news!! I was in Genoa, Nevada recently. Genoa is said to be the first Nevada settlement, established in 1851, by the Mormons and is on what was once part of the Pony Express. I was browsing in an antique store and came across this small photo album. The book is black with gold lettering which says photographs. It is held together by black cording....can't tell the age of the book....but the guy at the store said the book itself was probably early 1900's. (who knows!) The family this photo album concerns is a WHALEY family. There is a handwritten family lineage and some pictures, the pictures are mostly of old WHALEY family homes. Somewhere along the line someone took this book and typed captions to go with the pictures and an excerpt from a family members diary. I have to tell you that who ever wrote these captions was very poetic!! I will tell you what the captions say, typing verbatim, my notes will be followed by **: >From the diary of Grace Whaley Colchester, Essex, England August 2, 1914 "Whalley Castle" "Whalley Castle, sometimes called Colchester Castle, is the largest Normankeep in England. Erected in the latter part of the reign of William, The Conqueror. It is very badly ruined. The keep measures 152 feet by 112 feet and encloses twice the area of the Tower of London. It's walls vary in thickness from 30 feet to 11 feet. The portion now remaining consists of basement, or stores and of the first floor above, the quarters occupied by the garrison. Part of the castle is occupied by a public museum which contains some good Roman glass and the finest collection of late Celtic or Romano--British pottery and burial groups in the kingdom. The herringbone work on the inner walls is very interesting. The Castle was purchased by the Whalleys during the reign of Charles 1, who simply blew it up with gun-powder and sold the peices in order to obtain money with which to recruit himself in his Cromwellian Campagains. The simple village folks, who still take great pride in these relics of the past history, show indignation at such an unlawful deed and the fat old tour guide's face grew red with anger as he related the tale of such desecration." The castle is located in the village of Whalley, England and there is a bridge there called Whalley bridge. Robert Whalley was first cousin to Oliver Cromwell and a maternal descendant of William, the Conqueror. Wyamarus Whalley, about 1067, Standard Bearer in the Battle of Hastings. To him William, the Conqueror gave the Lordship of Whalley in England. **Then there is an old picture of what remains of this castle. Caption on picture reads: Whalley Castle, England A part of the structure, in old Mother England, that cradled the past of the first Whaley clan. 'Twas old Whalley castle, abode of one Robert, descended from Cromwell, the farm fighting man. **Next is a picture of an old house, large two story design with two chimneys on either end. Caption reads: The home of the Regicide Judge, that grim Whaley who sentenced King Charles to the loss of his head: then in the new world he built "Old Genezer" where he fled to after leaving England **Next picture is of Captain Peter Whaley and Elizabeth Davis Caption reads: Old "Captain" Peter, and Elizabeth Davis. The first of the Whaleyville settlers...... **Next is picture of Main street in Whaleyville. There are telephone poles in this picture so it can't be all that old. **Next the home of James Whaley, 1817. On the picture it says James Whaley, 1817 Elvira Thomas Green. Caption reads: The home of James (Jimmy), the son of "old" Peter who came from the bay seeking good "Bottom Land". **Next we have the home of Edward Thomas Whaley. On the picture it says: Edward Thomas Whaley 1828-1900 Mary Catherine Jones 1842-1923 Caption reads: This home bequeathed to the son he named Thomas. Was "old" Peter's homestead--the head of the clan. **Next, a large wooden house, two storey, looks like stables in the back. On the picture, Hester Ane Whaley 1819-1907 Dr. John Gillis Caption reads: LIved Hester Ann Whaley, in wedlock twice given. And Dr. John Gillis, last spouse of the lot. 'Twas also the last home of Seth Mitchell Whaley who moved to Virginia---but never forgot. **Next, a picture of a tiny church. On picture it says, St.Martins Church, erected to the Glory of God, 1759 Caption reads: To this little church in the midst of the wildwood--the foot steps of worship a pathway have trod. 'Twas there in the dim distant days of their childhood the Whaleys all gathered and learned about God. **Another house. Picture says: Maria Catherine Whaley 1826 Zadok "Z.G. Purnell. Caption reads: Here lived a daughter, Maria Catherine Whaley, who wed Zadok Purnell---they called him "Z.G." **Another house. Picture says: Mary Elizabeth Whaley 1822 John Spence Timmons. Caption reads: Here Elizabeth Whaley, whose first name was Mary. The wife of John Timmons, the father of Lee. **Another House. Picture says Seth mitchell Whaley 1821-1901 Mary Mumford Caption reads:Here lived the Whaley whom Peter named Mitchell. He later became quite a man of renoun. The wander-Lust got him; he moved to Virginia and there built another new "Whaleyville" town. **Old Farm. Picture says: Peter Jr. and Anne Catherine Caption reads: The farm owned by Peter, who lived there awhile with his wife Ann Catherine, of the Timmons array. **Another big house. Picture says: Peter Whaley Jr. 1831-1906 Anne Catherine Timmons 1839-1907 caption reads: And this is the homestead he built in the town that carries the name of the Whaleys today. **Last, a cemetery. Picture reads: The Whaley Burial Grounds. Caption reads: A life is not judged by its trails, or erors, but only by grace of the service it gave. To those gone before me, grim death had no terrors. They went, as a man must, at last to the grave. Pointing to Heaven and guarding their slumber. Erect stands a hovering sentinel pine. The years come and go, seasons change without number. OUr fathers at last rest in peace in their shrine. That's it for the pictures and captions. I'll send the handwritten lineage on another mail. This one might be getting a bit long!!
