    1. More Theophilus data
    2. I just printed out the Digests that George sent to 'catch me up' after my forced absence. I noticed the entries about Theophilus. For your information, Jackie has prepared some data from many sources and it is about "6 men named Theophilus". I have it typed but it is two pages long and I started putting it in e-mail, but something happened to part of it during my *absence.* So... to save me some time, I will offer it by attachment. If you are descended from a Theophilus, it would be nice to have this data. I also have 4 FGSs for Theophilus-- Theophilus and Mills Theophilus and Burdick Theophilus and Kilbourn Theopilus and Tripp (This one is the most recent one to be typed onto disk.) I also have a paper re the Joane who was the unmarried dau of Theophilus (Mills). She had a son Lawrence, and he was called a Whaley, so some hookups to Theophilus may come from her son. Ruby

    1. Rosanna Whaley Poppleton - abt 1710/12 - ????
    2. George F Payne
    3. Looking for more about Rosanna Whaley, wife of Samuel Poppleton (I). Tracing my wife's line down through her son Samuel Poppleton (II) who was born in NJ but married in VT. Some sources indicate Irish birth early in the 1700's. Don't know much else besides what the American Genealogical Index gives. There is a possibility that her husband was a Loyalist, however their son is certified DAR stock. There has been a suggestion her father was Edward Whaley but I've nothing concrete. Any help most welcome. George Payne Baltimore MD ___________________________________________________________________ Get the Internet just the way you want it. Franklin Whaley, father of Sally, born in the late 1800's, resided in same general area as Sally. Ida (Barnes) Whaley, mother of Sally, born in the late 1800's. Thank you so much. 3. Bob, You're most welcome. As I mentioned, records are held at the Town level in RI. NK Town Hall is on Scenic Rte 1 in Wickford, and EG Town Hall is 1 block west of Main Street (Peirce St I think). Court records are scattered in Court Houses and the State Judical Center in Pawtucket. RI Historical Society Library at 121 Hope St Providence and the State Archives on Westminster St Providence are good research stops. Theo's grave is listed in the on-line RI Hist Cem Transcription Project also. Wayne

    3. Wayne- Thanks for the information. It looks like it's time for a trip to RI. One of my business clients is located in Cranston and I am due to make a trip by fall anyway. I will stop and see what I can find, although I hold out little hope of any new discoveries since this ground has been trod upon by many before me. I am working a number of angles, on both sides of the Atlantic, but the Whaleys were a slippery bunch. I am going to have to make an extended trip to Richmond, VA, since I haven't been able to get the Theo info from the Virginia State Library that I have been looking for. I believe the Virginia/RI connection holds the best hope for any new discoveries regarding the American Theo. Bob Whaley

    3. Bob, No requirement to register BMDs until 1853 in Rhode Island. If a person had a will recorded there were most often will date and will proven dates in the town probate records. If a person died intestate, sometimes the date of death was noted in Town Council Notes in the form "...having been informed of the death of x on (date) last, and having owned property in this town, y was given a letter of administration..." Alden G Beaman, in his RI Genealogical Register, abstracted all the wills in RI up to about 1850 - No will for Theo. Austin, in his Genealogical Dictionary of RI p221 says: "He moved in the latter part of his life to the house of his son-in-law Joseph HOPKINS, situated in what is now West Greenwich [would have been East Greenwich then -WJ] He was buried with military honors on Hopkins Hill. He left a will, as Francis Willett mentioned to Dr Stiles that he wrote one for him." Further comments: 1. Hopkins Hill Road is about 4 miles due East of Exit 5 on Rte 95. 2. Beaman only abstracted wills, not Letters of Admin, etc. 3. It is barely possible that some record may be in the North Kingstown records. It was Kingstown until 1723 when split up into North & South. Town Hall is now in Wickford. The records were damaged to varying degrees in the fire of 1869. [anecdote - I was told that the records were kept on the 2d floor above the bank in 1869, and caught in the fire that was set to cover the gettaway of some cursed bank robbers]. Most of the records are still readable but left hand side of left pages and right hand side of right pages have been charred away. Leaves us with the maddening predicament of seeing names of persons but no dates on the left page, and dates but no names on the right page!! I left RI before I knew of my connection so I have not personally looked at records for WHALEY data. Not real likely since I'm sure others have looked and Theo had removed a little north to his son-in-laws, but quien sabe? 3. My wife's anctestry includes Rosannah Whaley who married Samuel Poppleton, down through their son Samuel (II) who married Caroline Osborn in Vermont. Sam (II) and Caroline Osborn worked their way west through NY and ended up in Richland County OH. While there are rumors of Rosannah being descended from an Edward Whaley, we haven't any hard and fast connection. The name "Whaley" appeard two generations later in the family, when Sam (II) and Caroline Poppleton's daughter Lydia Poppleton Thornton named one of her sons John Whaley Thornton. Happy to share what little we have, and looking forward to adding information and ancestors... Thanks in advance. Joanne Halterman ps new address "Linda Haas Davenport" <[email protected]> WWI Draft Applications Good Morning everyone: I played hooky from work yesterday and spent the day at the NARA Branch in Atlanta and it jogged my memory to pass on some information to everyone. Prior to the US's entry into WW1 (approx. 1917-1918) every male between the age of 18 and 40 was required to register for the draft. The information found on the card was provided by the individual himself. The registration cards vary in information depending on the individual draft board. But by and large the cards include: The full name of the person (this means first, full middle name, any additional middle names and last name); the current address of the man; his age; his birthdate (some include his place of birth); whether he is a US citizen or a naturalized citizen (some ask if his father was a naturalized citizen and his father's race); his race; his occupation; where he is employed (name of employer); address or location of employment; name and address of his next of kin; some cards ask if the man is married or single and how many people he supports. The card is signed by the draftee. On the back of the card his physical description is noted: Height is broken down by short, medium, tall although some cards give the actual height in feet and inches; Build by slim, medium, stout although some cards list actual weight along with the build; color of eyes and hair; any deformities or injuries are listed (such as one arm missing, blind in one eye, etc); the name and address of the draft board and the date. When these original cards were transferred to the East Pointe NARA branch the LDS spent about 3 years microfilming these cards. There are hundreds and hundreds of boxes and the LDS opened one box at a time and filmed them - in state order. However, within each state the cards were filed by draft board, not by county or by draftee. This makes the searching of the microfilm difficult to say the least. The good news is that the Friends of the National Archives took each box after it was filmed (and checked) and sorted all of these thousands and thousands of cards into - state and then COUNTY order and then in alphabetical order by surname and put then in new boxes. The Friends deserve all the kudos we can give them for this monstrous task. So ... rather than spending hours and hours searching the LDS microfilm you can order copies of the original cards from NARA. if you know the county your ancestor lived in between 1917-1918. And BTW - Ancestry.com lists WW1 Draft cards in their searchable data bases, however I know for a fact that there are 22 cards for the surname WHITE found in McIntosh Co, OK and Ancestry only gave me 4 of them so don't depend on that site.
